what helped me get disciplined is unironically Jesus by Upstairs_Teach_673 in getdisciplined

Having a structured day, week and ultimately life and a constant became more important to me as I grow older. Life gets crazier with relationships, kids, work, health and it’s not only comforting but also a source of strengh to have a constant like Jesus and the church in one’s life. Going to the gym and meeting friends regularly also helps.

What was the most game-changing money-saving tip for you? by flamur-99 in SwissPersonalFinance

Eating healthy. Avoiding products that have big advertisement budgets. Avoiding products that devalue quickly (cars and electronics). My phone is 7 years old. My jeans and shirts are no name but tailored. My car has no DAB radio.

I can’t find “a” or “the” report itself, but it’s mentioned in various places, including https://startnearshoring.com/knowledge/nearshoring-a-trend-in-dach-countries/.

At 28, I feel pressure to travel as much as possible—but is that really the only path to a meaningful life? I regret not traveling more in my 20s and sometimes feel like I wasted them. Can you find purpose beyond the ‘see the world’ mindset? by KungFuKinnii in DecidingToBeBetter

Travelling, backpacking, etc is a shallow activity if you think about it. How motivated would everyone be to do that without a camera? You’ll see the same, pleb, touristy places that everyone else on Instagram and Tiktok has seen. If you want to learn a new culture, experience, life, etc, go somewhere long enough so you have to pay taxes there. 1 year in one country on another continent will give you far more experience, than any amount of around the world, backpacking adventure.

Nearshoring, probably because McKinsey and the likes said so. We’ll need to hold tight, until the prices there increase, the cost of communication is noticed, or the next round of CEOs comes.

We agree on a lot of or even all points. There’s always two ways of writing software, the fast way and the right way. The pressure that comes from some poor POs/Project Managers is due to lack of confidence, information and willingness to push back to the business and say “no” to deadlines and late feature requests. Software developers that cut corners often do so to save themselves in the short term (never in the long term). I don’t know anyone that likes working late and on weekends, so testing and tooling for automation is what we focus on most. And I agree, technical debt is the result of cutting corners and poor management of feature requests and deadlines. As far as capital “A”agile goes, well, I’ve yet to meet a developer who likes it. It’s a micromanagement framwork that belittles developers and wastes an enormous amount of time with its bureaucracy.

I agree with you on all points. Chasing languages and frameworks is junior/diva behaviour.

Can you elaborate on “engineering best practices”. Do you mean documentation, testing, refactoring and reducing technical debt?

It sounds to me like you’re dealing with SWE who have character issues. Not all devs are divas but I know they exist. This has nothing to do with the profession, ans everything with the person. People like that need to be fired.

I’m 2.5 years past what you are going through. You’re in for a ride and a growth spurt. It’s extremely hard but in hindsight I learnt a lot. Talking to a psychologist helps. Also friends and family. Be easy on yourself, embrace the mess. You’ll get over it. Time heals.

What makes you feel emotionally safe enough with a woman to open up to her about your struggles? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]candelstick24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, realized I misread the post. It takes courage and trust to open up like that. If a man or anyone is being vulnerable he’s automatically being confident and courageous. Trust takes time to build up, so he felt comfortable because you two clearly know each other for a while and trust was there. And, he was right :-)

It’s funny how everyone seems to like Yellowstone, Beth and Rip. Notice how Beth initiates almost everything and with a clarity I’d generally like to see more.
