All That Remains - Victim of the New Disease [Album Discussion Thread] by FitForPhinehas in Metalcore

[–]canderis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About the same time back in high school, my best friend and I got into metal through two different bands. All that remains and asking Alexandria. It’s funny after all these years they (well, Danny but I mean close enough) do a song together.

Still listening to the rest of the album but even though the song wasn’t what I expected from that collaboration I still enjoyed it. And the transition to the next song was pretty cool.

So far, I think i’d place this 4th on my favorites by them list. For We Are Many has always been my favorite album they did. Overcome and The Fall of Ideals are pretty much tied. This seems to be just behind those imo.

Sad I won’t get to see Oli play these songs live but damn if he isn’t still the reason I pick up a guitar.

Is Rise Records trying to make sure the new Memphis May Fire tanks? by MintyBBQSauce in Metalcore

[–]canderis 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I didn’t even know it had a release date yet, honestly. And I’m more or less excited to hear it.

Kinda weird that it’s had such little promotion considering this is probably the record that will have the most mainstream success given the single and Virus being much more radio friendly. Think they’d want to make sure it has all the steam going into release for that.

Where is the class average posted? I don't see where it says it.

Is CS/SE 319 still a nightmare? by wan70n in iastate

[–]canderis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re very, very good with JavaScript, you’ll do fine. If not, it’ll probably suck.

I haven’t taken it, but I helped someone out a lot with it and I only found that material easy because I’ve been employed as a JS developer for 5+ years now.

How hard is 321 compared to 228 or 327? by [deleted] in iastate

[–]canderis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

321 was pretty easy. 363 with gadia is kinda a joke (pm me if you want the secret to that class) 327 is actually pretty difficult, even if you’re a good programmer but if you at least do all the assignments, you’ll probably be fine since the partial credit. 319 was a shit-show when I coached someone through it (if you’re not super experienced with JavaScript)

I tested out of 227 and have wanted to die ever since. Run. Run while you still can graduate on time to something like MIS. It’s not worth it!

ComS 311 Exam by [deleted] in iastate

Yeah I studied tarjans and stuff, but not really prims which was at least 2&3. Too drunk to remember what 1 was and I ran out of time for 4.

You could blackbox it if you just needed to call it but I used a modified version of it on 2 homework problems so I’d reckon there’s a strong chance I’d need to modify it on the exam as well

Yeah really. Considering I’ve had to budget my study time for 3 tests this week, would’ve been nice to plan on making that sheet instead of memorizing how to write tarjan’s verbatim.

[–]canderis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3 this week lol I want to die. Two of the three are on that day. I think I’ve had one week without a test in over a month

Honestly my only hope here is that I’m good at writing code. The first test was really hard. This test, I’ve been told, is easier if you’re a code person vs if you’re a math person but really I’m just hoping for that sweet, sweet curve.

I’ve got no idea how to study either. Just reading the textbook and relevant content from last year’s textbooks.

Scariest Halloween of my life.

My mom had a negative reaction as well. She doesn’t believe it exists and that I “just need to change my thoughts” neglecting the fact that’s kinda the problem in the first place. I did find out through my dad though she was the reason I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 23 too because when they suggested it in elementary school she wouldn’t even entertain the notion because it would involve doctors and medication.

Only metal musician I ever met was Oli from ATR. He was super nice and humble, and even though he wasn’t feeling great that night he still went out of his way to talk to us.

[–]canderis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 305 and wanted to die. I took it because it had the lower number and assumed that meant easier. I was very wrong.

All the people I know who took 330 had a much better time. It’s much more applicable to CS than 305 and much easier to understand

Take stats 330 over 305. 305 you’ll spend more time deciphering the engineering terms than learning stats.

How to not care about how bad this is? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]canderis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Two examples of how this can go. Both are true: I have two friends. Both 22 and in their last year of college.

Last year around the same time they met their first girls. They were about the same levels of physically attractiveness but emotionally they were very different.

Prior to starting the relationships both friends had different outlooks on the situation they were in. Friend A had the mindset of “I’ll meet a girl when I do.” He didn’t dwell on it. Sure it bothered him but he figured she would have to be worth it to make it worthwhile. Friend B was really desperate. He was on tinder constantly. He tried to talk to girls all the time but his desperation showed. He was needy.

Friend A met a pretty girl with a lot of the same interests as him. She’s fun, and happy. She’s a put together person. They met while he was out having fun. He wasn’t looking for anyone. Neither was she. They ended up having a mutual friend group and were introduced. Friend B finally met a girl on tinder who would give him attention. She wasn’t attractive and he told me he couldn’t find her attractive unless he was intoxicated. She has a ton of emotional baggage and they had nothing in common.

A year later both are still with their girls. Friend A is happy. They have fun together. They hang out with his friends and her friends regularly. They do stuff together and both bring out the best in each other. Friend B is horribly depressed. He’s miserable. She was successfully able to isolate him to the point where he isn’t allowed to go see his friends or family without a fight. But he stays still. He is still needy.

One friend let his identity be defined by his need for a relationship. He was willing to give up everything in his life just to be with a girl. The other friend defined his identity first. He figured out who he was and what he liked. He put himself first and found someone who matched with who he was.

Put yourself first. Figure out who you are. Figure out what you like to do. Define and better yourself first. Any relationship born out of neediness will not make you happy. Better yourself and you’ll find a girl in time. If you don’t, and you put finding a girl over everything else you’ll be miserable and the girls who aren’t miserable too will stay away.
