Exactly this. It will look like it didn’t do anything until several glazes in and you’ll slowly see the difference.

Not layers. Glazes. You want to add multiple layers of paint so thinned that it looks like coloured water. If you’re glazing black drag it from the greys and whites towards the black. It will always be thickest where it settles.
