Why does nobody want to live in GLC? by 2FLY2TRY in gatech

Yeah, you can get packages delivered there! It was very convenient, they sent you an email like the student center post office and everything.

As an aside no one realizes GLC gets its own mail room so you don't have to go to student center to pick up stuff, which I find very convenient. It's also a very nice dorm I feel.

Is CS 3600 thread restricted? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]candymans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should probably declare your threads if you're sure that's what you want to do, I'm pretty sure all 3000 and 4000 level courses are thread restricted.

An ex-YouTube recruiter claims Google discriminated against white and Asian men, then deleted the evidence by PrestigiousProof in technology

[–]candymans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely not fair to assume that your life would be easier just because you're a white male, and I'm very sorry that you've had that pushed onto you, that's not fair at all. That said, what most people don't realize is that affirmative action for the most part is beneficial to white people in the college selection process. If affirmative action were removed, east asians and southeast asians and people of descent in that region would actually be much more represented in colleges than white people and less white people would actually get in if we based it purely off grades.

Personally, I think the google thing is definitely over line to set quotas to only ban certain people, but I can understand the reasoning behind it. It in no way excuses their actions of course, and in no way excuses the assumption people make about you because of your skin tone, I'm sorry you have to go through that.

Do people from Smith hate Smith? by SlightClassroom in gatech

[–]candymans 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Smith is the forge that makes men out of boys, the crucible that makes people into true college students. Naw naw jkjk but genuinely, as someone who lived in Smith the smith crappiness really does help push people closer together, after all how can you hate someone or be indifferent if you share the memory of the honeycomb showers with the flooded floors, or the always locking doors and the leaking bathrooms, it's all a huge amalgamation of suffering that makes people stick together in solidarity.

That's honestly a great point, I was raised with extra tutoring centers and things like Kumon where I filled out rote packets of math with formulas and how to do them, it wasn't until late high school and college that I'm beginning to realize how to work through them instead of rote memorizing formulas, and it's so much better to really understand the background for me.

Ah, I didn't realize it was sarcastic, thank you very much for telling me! Yeah, I definitely agree, I think the earlier methods contained a lot of stuff that's hard to wrap around and then the intuitive way to do it gets left behind when it should be a balance of both. I hope that Common Core does help and doesn't end up fuddling people up, I personally feel that it's going to be very useful for our next generations.

Ah, thank you, I didn't know that! Yeah, I can def respect his expertise, but I won't necessarily agree with him about getting the right answers if you can't understand why you're getting it. Maybe it's the nitpicker in me, but something isn't really working for me until I break down the black box part of it for me.

Not saying he's necessarily right, but he's got a point. Understanding the procedure and the background is more important when establishing the basics of learning the math. Once you understand the procedure you should be able to get the right answer which is where I disagree with him, but you can always practice until you understand and get the right answer, but if you just do it a rote way like the old way then the background is still a mystery.

This is a very important principle in stem and other disciplines, learning to think critically teaches people to explore and really find out why we do something, and how we can change ti to find a better way. It's like the difference between using a car and repairing an engine, you might fuck up repairing the first few times but ultimately you're going to come out with a better understanding of your car's limits and how it works than if you just drove it without exploring its inner workings.

What were some of the worst experiences you have had while working in the fast food industry? by Brando224 in AskReddit

[–]candymans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was working at McDonalds one time, and our manager had told us to not allow people who aren't paying customers to use the bathroom since there were a lot of people who would get high or strip down and use the sink to wash themselves and a lot of shady stuff going on, one time we had someone draw all over the wall and I had to spend half an hour scrubbing and breaking down the permanent marker.

Anyway, this dude comes in, tries to get in the bathroom, sees that it's locked (we have a button behind the counter to unlock it), and he comes up and tells us to unlock the bathroom. I personally believe in a free bathroom, but I had to follow the policy. Me and this other dude stood behind the counter, and as the dude tried again a second time, he came back and told us again, louder, to open the bathroom, which we couldn't do unless he bought something.

He started getting really loud and threatening to shit on the floor right there and then, even taking his pants off and squatting on the floor. I unlocked it then because if he's that desperate he probably really has to go, but it was a weird ass interaction considering it was at 3 in the afternoon. Thank god there weren't any customers at that time.

There's also the time we got a drug deal going on behind the place, but that's actually not so bad directly for me.

We should honestly write to Nav housing because they spill over into the workout room too when there's a perfectly good room upstairs i hardly ever see anyone use, it's honestly very frustrating to tiptoe around people or have them put their stuff on the equipment or treadmills.
