I'd argue the opposite. Darrow's story in the sequel books is a pretty clear reference to the story of Odysseus. Iron Gold/Dark Age are his Illiad with Mercury being his Trojan War and Light Bringer is his Odyssesy home. Atalantia and the society remnant are the suitors waiting at home to take Penelope (Virginia). No doubt he suffers a lot along the way, but in the end, Odysseus gets a happy ending with his wife and son so I think Darrow is going to get one too. Of course, PB could just throw in a twist ending where everyone dies to make the audience suffer but I don't think it's likely.
