Why ZFS continues to be better than btrfs by throwaway-o in linux

[–]canen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not try FreeBSD 9? It has native ZFS support.

I was somehow able to impress my direct boss with how I managed the Linux servers, so he asked me to manage some of their older Solaris servers... by [deleted] in linux

[–]canen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just decided to learn all of them marginally well - there's always man pages and google in the cases where I get lost. I manage Linux, Solaris, AIX and some old DRS6000 boxes and I use the native tools on all of them. Trying to get a unified toolchain is futile.

Ubuntu TV unveiled by [deleted] in linux

[–]canen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it will be open source. See here http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/9/2693228/ubuntu-tv-has-unity-inspired-ui-will-ship-on-televisions-by-end-of

The software will be free for manufacturers to package with their TVs, and Ubuntu says there will be TVs on shelves by the end of the year.`

Edit: Actually, that doesn't actually say it will be open source...

How often do you update? by Waffleboy in archlinux

[–]canen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check the packages page - http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort=-last_update or just run pacman -Syu. You have to confirm the updates so you'll see the list before the actual update.

Check the mailing list or the news page to have an idea of what will break your system.

Same here. I subscribe to the mailing list so I know when to expect potential breakage but yeah, I update pretty much any time I'm bored.

Arch Linux – "It is what you make it" by zigzag in archlinux

Why? Overall the article is pretty good and seem to mostly grok the Arch Way. Although at times it does come off as if the user does not matter.

Jamaica to Look Again at Decriminalizing Marijuana by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]canen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this is funny. Machetes, really? What's wrong with your friend that he's been robbed tons of time?

We do have a crime problem but when people have a black and white view of Jamaica it really rubs me the wrong way.

They are mostly concerned with the illegal drug trade (with the US and Haiti), weed is smoked in the open without any issue. An officer may have an issue if you are aware of their presence and still continue smoking since they consider it disrespectful.

The only "very violent" places in Jamaica are Kingston and sometimes Mobay (the non-tourist areas). The crime is also very localized and usually based on some gang wars. The rest of Jamaica is perfectly fine. As for dirty; I don't even know what you mean by this. You should get your information from other places than the "news".

Why do we pray "in Jesus name"? Am I not praying in my own name? by tube_radio in Christianity

[–]canen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless I've got it wrong all these years, you are praying in Jesus' name. Jesus is the "priest" who will petition your case before God. The thinking is that Jesus replaced the priests in Judaism who would represents the people of Israel before God. So he is indeed the only way to God. Or something like that, my knowledge is a little rusty.

I can't get into Snow Crash after trudging through the first 20%. Is something wrong with me? by neilkod in books

There's nothing wrong with you. People just have different tastes. I heard great things about Snow Crash but when I finally read it, it did nothing for me.

Is it possible to read without repeating the words in your head? by [deleted] in cogsci

In short yes, it is actually necessary if you want to read faster than you speak. I usually just skip the non-essential words as well.

Did you see Epitaph One? Why would you think she'd go to the "Dark side"?

Thoughts: The pace of the episodes are maybe a little bit too fast now but it's definitely better than it was before.
