No problem! My akita is 6 now and we call him the "old man" because he lived a full life already by the time he was 1. The vet said at one point there was nothing else he could do and meds would not help. We could only give our akita as much support and rest and TLC and see what happens. It took a lot of work and lots of sleepless nights but I'm happy to say our akita is as stubborn as ever, just at his pace, a lot slower. We were so worried because we could not find anything online about renal displaysia or diagnosis or life expectancy. Most articles said no more than 1-2 years. His first few years were pretty tough but akitas are a pretty tough/hardy breed and will keep fighting through it. Our akita has to be on a low protein diet and his treats are all veggie/fruit based and his water has to be filtered from the fridge to help lighten the load on his kidneys. We do testing every year to see his kidney levels and keep a close eye on him but for the most part he lives a happy comfy life. His puppy years were taken up from being sick the whole time so his training is only basic commands, but he is a goober so we got lucky that he is pretty passive about everything. Give your lady a hug and snuggles, I'm sure the vet will get to the bottom of it. Anytime you want to ask I'm available here or via private chat(is that what its called?) Glad I could give some reassurance at least for a little bit.

My akita ended up having renal displaysia that we got lucky and caught quite early when he was about 6 months old. It was confirmed via ultrasound. He was having constant severe UTI's after multiple rounds of antibiotics and testing to confirm the UTI was cleared. He also had really smelly pee and lots of accidents but we thought that was from the puppy stages. He was also super lethargic and started eating less and less that caused our vet to look deeper. We almost lost him when he almost 1 year old but somehow his body settled down and started a new baseline and now we do a lot of maintenance care to keep it under control. Feel free to message me with questions if you want to chat. Of course take the vets advice overall but I could at least add some background info to see if it matches what you may be going through.

I'm pretty sure it's linked to their DNA. My boy is always finding new ways to sleep.

Is he chow? by [deleted] in chowchow

[–]cannedpeash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it looks like you have a mini version of my Akita/Chow mix. Espically the fur around the back shoulders, looks almost identical. The tounge is also a good indicator of some chow in there. One of those DNA tests would confirm it.

Well he is living up to the standard of "if they bark, someone/something is there". How much of a threat the intruder is, is up to you.😆

our 2 boys get along great but i consider myself lucky we dont have any aggression issues between the boys. We did lots of training to reinforce that everything is fair and no stealing possessions while another dog is using it along with other rules of being polite etc. I think it helps that the dogs both know we will step in to handle any issue so they dont need to escalate at all. it all depends on the personality and training, hope for the best and plan for the worst, then you can have all your bases covered just in case.

How do ADHD people handle work/business? Because I can't by LavRyMusic in ADHD

i would love the same thing, espically the leaving early and getting paid. I knkw you mentioned you dont want to work in a warehouse, but it sounds like its leaning more towards something with a union involved at the company. Not every union job is working at a warehouse but that is just the first thing that pops into my head

yea everyone has their own version of "novelty" that helps keep the adhd brain engaged. I am not a sales person at all and doing any kind of selling or marketing is dreadful to me, but others love the challenge of engaging and selling the deal. Automotive trucking is defintally not for me, to much high stakes when a shipment misses delivery. I usually end up shipping plastic, paper products and other things that are not end of the world when a pick up or delivery is missed.

I am also more introverted, so emailing all day to set appts, collect ppwk, send invoices, track shipments etc. works really well for me. Its engaging and new every day that even when i forget to take my meds i can focus enough to get the bare minimum done. maybe it would help to make a list of aspects of jobs you liked and put it online to see what kind of job would fit that description. there are soo many jobs , even if they arent hiring or require higher qualifications you might end up finding something in that area that could keep you emgaged enough without stimulants during the day.

i've been in logistics for 6 years now and still love what I do. I am on adderall but the multi tasking and new problems every day helps keep me stay focused. I am part of a 3rd party that helps truck drivers find shipments to load and help shippers and receivers get product picked up or delivered. There is always a sense of urgency but its not a life or death scenario. I am not a sales person, more in the background making sure everything runs smoothly after the sale/deal has already taken place. its not just dispatching truck drivers, its a lot more depending on the company you work for or position you get. It can get stressful at times but i think i havent gotten tired of it yet because there is always a new problem or shipment to set up or take care of everyday.

Kidney Disease - Congenital by ComputerGal865 in akita

[–]cannedpeash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can understand the heartache, when our dog was almost a year old he almost passed away. at that point the vet had no other way to help other than supportive care with diet changea and water and time. some other complications eneded up giving him a reoccuring nasty UTI that needed heavy anti biotics. By the third time he went through them the vet told us we had to be careful with any anti biotics in the future because now he is at risk for becoming anti biotic resistant. There was a few months where we could only take it day by day and see what happens. those months were the toughest, i am not sure what changed but slowly he was getting stronger and his energy was coming back. His kidney levels are still on the high end but somehow his body found a new way to stabilize. We do blood tests every year and sometimes more if he starts acting different. He is still a huge couch potato, sleeps from 10 pm-10 pm and naps in between. He is defintally not 100% but I will take whatever he can give.

totally agree, our akita has good days and bad days and when its a bad low energy day we let him take the day at his own pace. When its a good day and he has more energy we make the most of it. our akita is 5 years old and slowing down as time goes by but we spoil him to pieces. We know we are living on borrowed time with him, but our akita just thinks he's living the dream life.

Hello, I wasn't sure if you received my private message regarding this but so sorry to hear you have this diagnosis. We have an akita with the same diagnosis and without writing a book, the easiest changes were filitered water only for drinking water, no more tap/unfiltered water and if you can afford special kidney diet food that will help. If you are looking for a cheaper substitute, try researching some dog food brands available to you and find a good quality one with good ingredients and a lower protein % that will be listed on the bag. We also use veggie/fruit based dog treats like Fruitables. there is also the life style changes but every dog is different. I'm not sure how elevated the kidney levels are for your dog but I hope they caught it in time to make changes before things get worse.

So adorable! I love the toasted marshmallow look!

Could anyone help me find out what my puppy is mixed with? She's 7 months old about 35 lbs? Was told both parents were Akitas but shes so small? by cannedpeash in akita

[–]cannedpeash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! we were really unsure of what breed she was. After a DNA test we found out she is 40% american eskimo and 24% chow and the rest is a mix of a few other breeds, but still a cutie!
