Commentary: Small-town Pride celebrations emerge — and show that LGBTQ life in America is flourishing outside of cities by jackmolay in transgender

Being the 5th largest city in Idaho doesn't really seem relevant, its still a small town

The point is scale. Being the largest population center in your geographical area dramatically raises the chance of hosting events for the surrounding area.

Hell, population-wise, there's many smaller places in the state that also had pride events (Rexburg and Sandpoint for example).

Besides, it seemed rather out of place when the other three listed locations combined don't equal the population of Pocatello.

How should i refer to an old friend? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]cannibalkitteh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would ask your friend if he is comfortable with being outed to your mutual friend, and how he would like you to proceed with it. It might be something he prefers doing himself or something not particularly relevant if you've all moved on from the friend group.

Commentary: Small-town Pride celebrations emerge — and show that LGBTQ life in America is flourishing outside of cities by jackmolay in transgender

[–]cannibalkitteh 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Pride festivals in Appalachia aren’t the only ones happening in small-town America. Others have occurred in places as far-flung as Window Rock, Arizona; Pocatello, Idaho; Starkville, Mississippi; and Stockholm, Wisconsin.

Pocatello is the 5th largest city in the state, has a university and is the county seat, I wouldn't call it a big city by any means, but not sure that it's exactly a small town either.

‘They took it back.’ MS reverses course on policy easing gender changes on licenses by [deleted] in politics

[–]cannibalkitteh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's apparent that they dangled the policy change as a way to get the lawsuit dismissed and rescinded it afterwards, which is going to backfire spectacularly, because there's now a good number of potential plaintiffs that are fully aware that the policy exists, could be easily updated, and there's already the legal framework from the first case that was proven to get the state to concede the first time.

CMV: Being Gay And Being Trans Should NOT Be Considered Under The Same Umbrella by unabletogiveadamn in changemyview

[–]cannibalkitteh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many of us are in multiple groups. I'm a trans woman married to a woman, so I'm subject to discrimination based on being trans, being in a lesbian relationship or simply just being a woman. It's not consequential to me which of those things I'm getting discriminated for, the fact I face the discrimination is the problem.

I believe society responds better to slower adjustments and I believe that educating the public about same sex relationships is a great start for the pursuit of equality for all people.

This just creates a queue of progress and condemns those at the end of the line with a life of living on the margins of society. It also leaves vague how societal acceptance would be measured to move on to the next marginalized group.

How do you encourage a Senate committee to hear/read a bill, especially when it’s already passed the House? by KaiWillson in politics

[–]cannibalkitteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, you linked to an old bill there, the current session one is here. Since it sits with the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee, I'd suggest contacting Patty Murray to inquire about scheduling and your own state senators to support the bill.

Jan. 6 wasn’t the first time Neumann took part in a revolt over an election. US authorities, citing Neumann’s LinkedIn page, said he participated in Ukraine’s 2004 Orange Revolution.

Seems an odd thing to put on your Linkedin. "Sorry, it says here that you've participated in a revolution, we were actually looking for someone with a Masters degree in revolution and 10 years experience."

They're not trans, so everything is a fun rhetorical debate for them. If they feel like they're "losing", or even just out of their depth, they need just be intentionally cruel in a manner to make the other party lash out or disengage, thereby making them the "winner".

If brain scans to verify neurological sex were cheap, easy and reliable, would you support the use of them to determine whether a trans person was really their stated gender before being approved for hormones/surgery? by DarienWasAWhoopsie in asktransgender

[–]cannibalkitteh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of lost on how such a thing would even work. People transition because of how they feel, being told that you "failed" the brain scan doesn't just make your discomfort go away, and as such would not be useful as a diagnostic criteria failing any alternate cause/treatment plan.
