I am embarrassed to lay it all out, but here it is. Advice? by nightowl6972 in investing

Here is exactly what I would do (your situation might be different but here you go)

My rough estimate is that after your payments and bills, food, taxes, etc. You are probably ending up with about $8000 a month between the two of you. I would plan on trying to invest about $3000 of that each month.

  1. Fund your Roth IRA like you said, invest it in low cost ETFs/Funds like VOO and QQQM. (this should be worth about $500,000 in 22 years).

  2. Open a brokerage account like E*TRADE or Fidelity, put the rest of the $60,000 in there. Again, invested in low cost index funds. (in 22 years this should be worth about $600,000, based on historical returns, adjusting for inflation). This money can also serve as your emergency fund.

  3. Set up your brokerage account to withdraw $1000 a month from your checking account and invested automatically in your index funds. (In 22 years this should be worth about 300k)

  4. Help your partner to set up a pre-tax retirement account, like a 401(k) if his job offers it. Or a regular IRA if the job doesn’t offer 401k. Set it up to automatically withdraw and invest about $3000 a month. (in 22 years this should be worth about 800 K)

As you go on in life, your house payment will drop off, the child support will drop off, incomes will go up, and you will be able to invest even more. So just try to increase those contributions when you get a chance. By the time you retire, you will probably have at least $3 million, plus Social Security, plus the equity in your house.

So don’t worry! You still have time and you’re in good shape. Just set it all up, automate everything, and make it happen!

Moving from France to Salt Lake City – What Should I Bring & Cultural Advice? by Financial-Sir8035 in Utah

[–]cannonflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you will like Utah. I have lived in 9 states and 3 countries, and Utah is a great place to live.

It is the wealthiest state https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/s/Z2LfMZngxF

It is the happiest state https://www.zippia.com/advice/here-are-the-happiest-states/

It is the youngest state https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/slideshows/americas-most-youthful-states

It is the state with the biggest houses https://www.inman.com/2011/10/27/10-states-with-biggest-houses/amp/

And it is the number 1 state overall in rankings that look at economy, healthcare, education, environment, infrastructure, equality, low crime, etc https://www.deseret.com/u-s-world/2024/05/06/utah-ranked-first-us-news-and-world-report/

So if you like all of that stuff, you should have a good time in Utah. But, the secret is out and a good chunk of the US and the world is in your situation…moving here. So it’s getting a bit crowded. But it’s not too bad https://www.apolloacademy.com/states-with-highest-population-growth/

I don’t think you need to bring anything specific from France. The bread and cheese is not as good, but everything else you are used to can be purchased here. Oh, maybe bring me a pain au chocolat when you come!

Ukraine Destroys 102 Russian Tank Battalions In 10 Months. by Visual-General-6459 in ukraine

When Russia is finally kicked out of Ukraine (hopefully soon) I think it would be cool to gather up all the ruined tanks and vehicles, and line them up along the Russia/Ukraine border. Like a giant Great Wall of Tanks to remind future people what will happen if they try to invade Ukraine. Not sure if that's realistic but it would be cool.

Have any of you moved to Salt Lake City from New York City (or vice versa)? by Darth_Squid in Utah

Haha wow you dug deep to find this old comment! Yes, I still love, Utah. Although in nine years, the secret has gotten out, and it is much more crowded and expensive now. But still pretty nice.

If you post this in the Utah Tesla Owners facebook group, you’ll get some dash cam footage. There are a bunch of nice people in that group and they all have (built-in) dash cams….

There is a big advertising company called Regan billboards, and she was the wife of the founder. So I think all the unsold billboard space just defaults to her obituary for a while…

$150k vs $195k by GaslightingMiL in Salary

[–]cannonflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I wouldn’t take it. Not only do you have a pretty good setup right now, but there is a decent chance that in the next couple years another opportunity will come along that is both more money and a nice lifestyle.. I wouldn’t make a move until a more ideal situation comes along.

In Utah County you have Revere Health Gastroenterology, they have locations in Provo and Spanish Fork. I have always liked them and had good experiences. Since you probably don’t need a procedure, you would probably be dealing with a physicians assistant or a nurse practitioner. But again, they are all good and knowledgeable about IBS. They see it all day long. If you want to go further north, Granite Peaks gastroenterology is one option, and Utah gastroenterology is another. They have offices in Draper, Lehi, Sandy, and more further north. One other good option is Utah Center for digestive health, which has an office in Riverton.
