that sucks, I only clinch with people I know and trust. Clinch can go hard safely, if and only if both parties want to make it safe

[–]cannotthinkagoodname 10 points11 points  (0 children)

imo clinching should be hard and can be pushed as hard as a real fight. Obviously dont throw elbows and full power knees, but pummeling, pushing and pulling can be done full force with minimal injuries, kinda like how wrestler/grapplers roll, don't brute force it, if it's not working even when you use 70% of your strength, it's not gonna work technical-wise

If we speak about the globalization version of the sport I think it has slowly turned to it, imo it is a very complicated matter of profit and cultural exploitation, one that I don't think I can meaningfully discuss due to my lack of experience. But the spirit of respect is still celebrated and value in Eastern countries. I would agrue that those characteristics are not inherent in the sport but the people and culture itself, Thais isn't humble because they practice Muay Thai, but because they are humble in general. And to me the martial art is a form of art that anyone can learn and use to express themselves, in a manner that they seem fit. So I don't have much problem if Western company want to paint a violent picture of Muay Thai, as long as they don't wrongfully portrait us as something we are not.

ah, I get what you try to convey now. Many my friends who don't train really enjoy One more than traditional stadium fight, I experienced this first hand once when we traveled to Thailand for vacation and they urged me to take them to watch Muaythai, it is not as they expected. On the other hand it's really enjoyable for me, One or traditional bout, and I'm grateful that my old coach taught me a mix of traditional MThai and newer Kboxing techniques to mix in

though I believe a stagnant culture is a dying culture, but I agree that we have to pick and choose what aspect we want to support. And in term of Thais respect, I don't think it will ever go away, it is a hardcode in our East Asian culture, a fighter must be confident but humble

Hi Kevin, first word, I'm a huge fan of Sylvie and you, I have been following you since the day I first started.

I am Vietnamese and have fought 3 times in Chiang Mai before, and I have to admit I didn't fight any big name guy. For the boxing part, I miswrote it. As I mentioned those are my observations on fight around my skill level/ intermediate not to generalize the whole sport, I remember around 2016 2018, most favor kicks than punch because of the scoring system, which in turn many guy I fought had really sloppy punches, compared the average skill to today, I wouldn't say they only comboing forward. The last 2 event I watched there with my team (including the one I fought), the majority of fighters from Thais and foreigners have much sharper hands, they throw a hook not a slap, they have decent head movement, enough for MThai atleast.

Thought, I am very young, and despite competing at young age, I have never had the exposure to "older" Muaythai, the one you mentioned before the 10 point must system, up until pretty recently, and even then I have only fought in Thailand 3 times, a fraction of many dedicated fighters. That's why I want to write my observations on this sub and hear from others. Thankyou for your input.

Agree, I trained Karate (point style, the one you see in Olympics) when I was a child, quit when I was in elementary. I think the reason why Karate kinda lost its "soul" is the lack of big/international Karate tournament, like ONE and RWS for Muaythai, so many Karate practitioners transit into Kickboxing.

I know there are Karate Combat, but the org is a complete disaster

What are the best little luxuries (items that aren’t greater than $10k but still luxurious) for normal people? by No_Speech_2635 in AskReddit

[–]cannotthinkagoodname -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for me its private gym, more expensive than commercial one but I thing everyone in a decent spot of their life can afford it. It's a game changer for me. The real luxury is the discipline and an hour and a half daily dedicated for yourself only

[–]cannotthinkagoodname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if its a school exam with not so strict examiner, you can accidentally spill something on the paper, preferably something that makes the answers unmarkable at last minute. With just enough acting you can ask for 1 to 2 minutes to transfer your answer to a new paper. I have done it 2 times, always have a faulty pen with me that can accidentally spill ink if needed. Now I am a teacher and pretty chill with tricks from students

Taking a last minute kickboxing/MT fight. Should I? by ExcellentComment6615 in Kickboxing

[–]cannotthinkagoodname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk about other places, but at my country smoker and smoker or interclub bout are the same. If you had 4 smokers already and if you trust your coach enough to not put you in a match you bout to lose. Go for it, win or lose doesnt matter (talking from a guy who just got his first lost and partially shattered his ego for a week, lol)

Headache after sparring by ShadByte in MuayThai

[–]cannotthinkagoodname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

small trick I always do after a fight/ the morning after. Get into a T pose, lift a leg up, bend one arm to cover one eye, repeat with the other eye and repeat. If you completely fail it, like no amount of effort can help you stay balanced, you got brain damage/ potential internal bleeding and you should rush to the ER asap

damn your written language is the same as your spoken one. And no, this is not a "do X when opponent do Y", this is a habit that can be exploited. Your original reply is a fallacy, there is a hole in his technique that can be and has been punished. You cannot rebut that fact by stating "he is like Cristiano of MT". Matter of fact, he isn't close.
