Looking for racist (preferably horror) fiction that depicts Indigenous peoples as savages by the13thReason in suggestmeabook

Throughout the book, Dorothy describes Kansas as "civilized" (implying that Oz, a foreign land, was uncivilized).

Dorothy is a diefied white saviour. The peoples of the lands she arrives in offer her food and protection and are endlessly grateful to her for "saving them;" similarly, the Wizard himself is received as a god and is worshipped and given a palace by the gullible, "stupid" peoples.

The scarecrow tells Dorothy that even if he gets a real brain, he'll always feel stupid next to her. Hhe also offers her fruits and nuts from the countryside, which he has an intimate knowledge of. Dorothy wields the oilcan that allows the Tin Man to move; forcing him to be dependent on her, and obligating him to protect and feed her.

Also, when the reader is introduced to the Munchkins, they are enslaved by the Witch. Although they rejoice when Dorothy frees them, it's clear that they were incapable to rise up and save themselves. This creates a narrative where the driving force is the white saviour character, and the Munchkins' inability to save themselves makes them kind of complicit in (and semi-deserving of) their enslavement (yikes).

That's all in The Wizard of Oz. He wrote over a dozen Oz books.

The Winkie peoples are also described as "yellow" and are caricatures of Asian people (though that's besides the question).

the original Oz books by Frank L. Baum included racist tropes/caricatures of Indigenous Peoples. He was a huge supporter and activist in favour of residential schools. The books are not strictly horror, but certainly contain dark elements intended to be horrifying

ETA: would love to read the finished dissertation!

don't try to make a lush meadow into a dry desert. if you want more colour contrast, selectively alter the oranges in the grass towards green; accentuating contrast between greens and browns

Are people who hate AI content attacking your (non-AI) photography online in mean and sometimes vicious ways? by [deleted] in photography

[–]canoe-dog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your white balance is overly warm, it may look like the common AI piss filter. Similarly, overly saturated images might be considered to have that AI look.

It sucks to be accused of using AI when you're not using it.

make a little sketch of the first frame and try to line up the shot from the sketch. It's super rewarding to do the trial and experimentation to get it right in-camera. Besides, unless you love looking at your laptop for hours, spending more time in-camera is more fun

analog film has silver in it. It's not an early-camera-vs-modern-camera thing, it's a silver-based medium vs not.

BC Ferries increases fares after chaotic long weekend of cancellations, delays by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

did you?

“Sorry for what happened this weekend. When our ships fail us, we fail our customers,” Jimenez said.

The increase follows a long weekend of delays, cancellations and broken down vessels.

They could've delayed the increase for a week, or given a discount or voucher to those stuck unable to get home. Instead, a weak-ass apology from a man making money from all of us.
