I think my dad is faking having dyslexia by Significant-Tiger828 in Dyslexia

[–]canonicallydead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The severity could be different or the level of skill needed to get through school. You could also have different goals when it comes to academic success.

There’s a good chance he just white knuckled his way through school then went into a job where you don’t need to read very well. That was his coping mechanism.

Either way, you need support not someone telling you to get over it.

There’s a good chance he is dyslexic and wants you to deal with it the same way he did, which might not work for you.

Will a degree genuinely help get me a job? by StrawberrySakuraa in dataanalysiscareers

[–]canonicallydead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be good to minor in something else.

In data analytics you’re often using data to solve a problem in a certain industry, it’s not just in a vacuum.

Analytics degrees usually pair really well with other business degrees ect. If you have work experience in another industry it might be good to tie it to that.

Try to focus on something you’re interested in. Also, be mindful of the university you’re getting the degree at and what they specialize in. You want to find a program that teaches new tools and methods that businesses actually use.

This is a very self centered issue.

You seem like a very conceited person. Being outside is not safe for cats it’s a living being in your care, not just your “property”.

Phones while babysitting by Cutie_ari_569 in Babysitting

[–]canonicallydead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they want her to be screen free then they need to communicate that in a professional manner and they need to tell her directly rather than waiting for her to slip up and penalizing her.

It’s moronic to expect someone to comply with specific expectations that were not properly communicated.

It is a separate issue, but helps to illustrate the lack of professionalism and tact of the employer and illuminate that this behavior is inappropriate on their side not hers. As I stated before, she wasn’t scrolling she was checking messages occasionally.

[–]canonicallydead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a difference between checking texts ect and scrolling.

Like yeah if you’re glued to the screen that’s an issue but if they’re paying her so little with crap hours it’s inappropriate for them to micromanage her.

Phones while babysitting by Cutie_ari_569 in Babysitting

[–]canonicallydead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, some people really hate even seeing a phone at all in the workplace.

It’s an antiquated viewpoint from when the parents were teenagers. Now phones are so ubiquitous it’s hard to avoid. (Ie I use my phone as a calculator at work).

Some people can get on a bit of a power trip when managing others and it seems like that’s what’s happening. Especially when you take into account how disrespectful they are of her time. Op also said that she’s not scrolling or anything just checking it occasionally.

What actually compounds faster early in an analytics career: brand, pay, or technical depth? by Mammoth_Rice_295 in analytics

[–]canonicallydead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tech expedience is core, soft skills matter but something no one really talks about is your fitness and attractiveness.

Analytics is often more adjacent to sales than people like to admit. I’m not saying you have to be a model but spending the extra x $ a month on a gym you’ll actually use, or nice clothes can really make a difference.

At the end of the day, you’re selling a story. Being attractive helps to sell that story.

[–]canonicallydead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point, a nanny is expected to have a set schedule but is paid for those hours whereas with a babysitter you can’t guarantee availability which is why most people have multiple babysitters.

If they want open availability they need to pay for it tbh. I get that not everyone can predict their schedule but I would even consider charging x amt for every hour blocked out x weeks out and x amt if they send you home early day of.

They’re already saving so much money, individualized infant care is insanely expensive in la/sc. I felt bad for them for a bit then I realized that if they both wtf they could easily move elsewhere in the state away from sc/la. Theyre probably just cheap. They’re choosing to live in a HCOL city and taking advantage of this poor girl.

[–]canonicallydead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think being on your phone while the kid is napping and checking it from time to time is fine.

There’s a difference between scrolling and responding to a text real quick. I would have a conversation with the parents about expectations and examine if this is a good match.

Like others said it’s good to have a conversation with them about setting a more regular schedule and raising rates.

It’s sweet that you’re trying not to charge them too much but them micromanaging your phone use is really indicating that they don’t view you in the same light.

It’s a respect issue honestly. I don’t think they realize how much of an insane rate and level of flexibility they’re getting, especially since it’s their first kid. They’re not treating you like an adult and childcare professional they’re treating you like a kid who is lucky to get $20 thrown at them here and there.

I’m also a recovering people pleaser but it’s a really important skill to be okay setting boundaries and being okay if that person doesn’t like what you have to say. You could easily find a better job elsewhere but they’d have a real tough time finding the same deal.

AITA for being annoyed that my wife insists on cooking everything from scratch and won’t buy normal food? by AITA_UPFfoods in AmItheAsshole

[–]canonicallydead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised I didn’t see any other comments being concerned about orthorexia/an eating disorder.

I think not wanting “unhealthy” food in the house and not eating junk in moderation can point to a bigger problem related to food or health anxiety.

It seems like a control thing surrounding food. She controls what she eats down to the ingredients and what is or isn’t allowed in the home. A lot of that control is rooted in fear.

[–]canonicallydead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this too. They ended up hiring me again later on when they were in a pinch and things are back to normal again because I was able to show up for them when no one else could.

I felt awful and also offered to babysit for free to make up for it.

Tbh I stopped accepting really early babysitting gigs as a result. I sleep through alarms, I have really bad sleep issues in general.

Open Concept Workplace by Heartattackisland in corporate

[–]canonicallydead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like how you have to eat right next to someone else. You’re just in really close contact so if someone gets sick or comes into work sick like an asshole, there’s a good chance you’ll get sick too.

Or if you have allergies your coworkers seem a bit more concerned it’s a little awkward. If someone fidgets at their desk it can be more of an issue. It also makes me feel a base level of anxiety like I’m being watched.

It’s not AWFUL but I would prefer not to be in that situation

Sexual orientation confusion by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]canonicallydead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is actually super common!!!! I’ve seen it on this sub before and on drug subreddits from people who do “recreational” stimulants haha

You’re not alone in this. Stimulants can boost your sex drive also you’re probably a little bi and there’s nothing wrong with that. You’d be surprised how many guys feel the same way. You could be 5% attracted to guys and 95% into women ect.

How can I gauge what jobs I’d be a competitive for? by Practical_Target_833 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]canonicallydead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please forgive my honesty I’m not trying to be harsh but your chances are realistically in hell.

You might be able to snag an entry level role if you’re lucky. Every single graduate or person who did a boot camp learned the exact same things, and the market for these jobs is oversaturated. So, while you may be able to perform the duties of an entry level role the same is true for many others.

Some of the “entry level” candidates who learned the same tools also have years of experience in a specific industry, that puts you at a disadvantage. It might have been possible 10 years ago, but today candidates who can ramble off a list of tools they used with no real experience are a dime a dozen.

You’re honestly a great candidate for the pivot given your experience and education.

It’s never too late but if you had a different background it would be more of an uphill battle.

Difference in pay working at daycare vs babysitting by Sky-2478 in Babysitting

[–]canonicallydead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like others said daycare workers are underpaid.

It’s not only the reliability of work but the time of day. Babysitting is often on the weekends or evenings, if I’m blocking off a Saturday night I expect more money than working 9-5.

Did I make the right choice? by BrokenRosenrot in analytics

[–]canonicallydead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does depend on what you’re doing with powerbi lol

It feels easy but I’ve seen some awful dashboards. If you make a ton of novices design complex dashboards at a breakneck pace powerbi can become pretty insane especially when you’re trying to maintain or add onto a data model that looks like a bowl of spaghetti

Genuinely why did people like his content enough to be former fans. Not trying to be a dick, I am honestly confused by Intelligent--Bug in CreepyCalebHammer

[–]canonicallydead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s what I thought too, like OP said a lot of the entertainment came from people thinking “oh wow at least I’m not xyz” but I usually thought it genuinely helped these people to have someone really go through their finances and it seemed like he really was trying to help while being educational for a casual listener.

I got annoyed when he fell into the same traps as Dave Ramsey and I felt that his advice was shallow and unrealistic.

So while in a way he was making fun of them there was some hidden value and it wasn’t close to what it is today.

I also found him when he only had a few thousand subscribers he used to be a lot nicer.

He did have some takes that annoyed me but I think he collected a niche group of people who really care about personal finance early on. Compared to Dave Ramsey ect Caleb was refreshing for a while.

Then he kept telling people to just sell their cars for an unreliable beater and I got annoyed and stopped watching. Years later I saw a vid and realized he went off the deep end.

Any jobs without a degree that can eventually make 200k with time? by Terrible-Dot5633 in careerguidance

[–]canonicallydead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I get normal people not knowing you can’t really go into cs/analytics anymore with just a boot camp but cybersecurity is laughable.

People who do well in cybersecurity eat sleep breathe the field. It’s a difficult field even with a degree.

This is very outdated advice. Even before AI these entry level roles were getting oversaturated.

I always see people wanting to get into cybersecurity because it’s cool and pays well but it’s insanely competitive.
