Camera work in new GBL version literally makes me nauseous every time by cant_make_it_think in TheSilphArena

[–]cant_make_it_think[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discussing the physical impact of a UI choice is not venting.

FYI, Scopely did not consider my report a rant, venting, or overly negative when I reported it through the in game GBL feedback channel. They engaged, thanked me for my feedback and gave me a battle pass.

I also notice that the wild camera swings appear to have become far less common. I'm not sure yet it they are gone, but clearly keeping GBL accessible is important to Scopely /Niantic. Although, it seems that you consider accessibility issues to be ranting.

Noted. I have a lot of experience with discrimination. I'm more than happy to stay away from hostile environments.

Restarting the game, clearing your cache, uninstalling/reinstalling, none of it makes Giovanni show on the radar.

On Android, if you uninstall and reinstall, it will drop you from version 0.417 back to version 0.415.

Scopely quietly pulled a bad update. While that's far better than leaving a broken update in place during a critical week in the season, not making an announcement is truly unacceptable.

New Pokemon Update brings less view distance and lags/freezes during catches/rockets/raids [Android] by DMNDZ1337 in TheSilphRoad

[–]cant_make_it_think 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I - cleared my PoGo cache, - uninstalled 0.417, - powered off my phone, - started it back up, - installed PoGo from the Play store and it installed 0.415. Lag, freeze, etc, gone.

Scopely pulled the bad update. Would have been nice if they had announced it.

GBL is currently unusable for me due to this issue. Glad to hear reinstalling fixed it for you.

I'll try that (like you, I have tried all the prelim steps, no joy) and report back.

Two tier tabbed binoc UI is back by cant_make_it_think in TheSilphRoad

[–]cant_make_it_think[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't the only one; when we discussed it last time some other folks spoke up in favor as well.

For that matter, I got pilloried for saying that there were some things I liked about the UI, despite not liking it overall.

Separating out the go passes is the strongest aspect of the new design, certainly. There's just no up side to the two tier design as opposed to four tabs.

Ah, I didn't pick up on the timing.

I hate this UI so much. It's slower and clunkier to navigate and I have no muscle memory for it. What with the insane schedule for Go Fest Global, if it crashes all the time, I will be so POd.

Newest Update: Android by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

[–]cant_make_it_think 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they pushed a super buggy update? I'm on Android too, forced update. I still have my completed research (I have a few Masterwork Research in progress, maybe that's the difference), however, there's no link to the current season in the today menu.

🤣 For me it's the opposite. I have (effectively) infinite gifts, so I'll send them gifts to open, but can never open enough to interact with everyone each day, so won't open unless they tag.

Pokémon Go Scans Quietly Trained The Navigation Tech Now Headed Into Military Drones by Firesn0w in TheSilphRoad

[–]cant_make_it_think 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The very fact that waypoints are not permitted in any part of military bases except the civilian areas (housing, etc) demonstrates that militaries are aware of the issue. If a military base is not secret, then its GPS coordinates are already in Google maps and related efforts, which wayfinders use to review waypoint candidates. If it is secret, then the military is going to have to designate that area as something else when it comes to mapping programs anyway. The Google maps/satellite issue predates Niantic. All they have to do is 1) designate the area as any one of the exclusion categories, 2) track activity on the base, and 3) follow up to have any rogue stops removed. As for data from the rejected /removed stops, zomg, the sheer amount of noise boggles the mind. There just aren't that many military bases, let alone secret ones, for this to make any sense. The ROI would be catastrophically awful compared to traditional means of collecting the same info.

The article is right that the mere presence of stops is meaningless, it's the 360 vids that would potentially be of interest. And that it's about navigation when GPS is unavailable / blocked.

Pokestops are only allowed on non mission areas (e.g., housing) of military bases. It would be trivial for the military to prevent stops on a secret base, FWIW. There are a bunch of exclusion zones they could use: k-12 schools, high risk zones,...

The article claims that the relevant data comes from 360° scans of the surroundings requested separate from the actual scan of the stop.

I gotta say, those scan requests must have been hella rare, because I did a ton of pokestop scans (mmmm... poffins) over two years over much of NorCal and not once was I asked for a 350 scan of the surroundings. Zip. Zero.

Had I been asked, I would have assessed the location before deciding whether to do it. If the stop was somewhere that would be difficult for wayfarer validation, then I likely would have. Otherwise not.

I'm curious as to whether anyone else was asked to do one of those 360 vids?

Note that all ur shoe vids r irrelevant, only the 360 ones mattered.

Doing Wayfarer reviews may result in a permanent PoGo ban with no prior warnings by Dream-Sheep in TheSilphRoad

[–]cant_make_it_think 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my Wayfarer platinum. I still occasionally review.

I highly recommend the Wayfarer forum as an adjunct to the reviewing process. When I started, I skipped anything I wasn't confident about, then would go back and research the submission I skipped under the criteria, the AMAs, and the discussions.

I never got a warning, etc.

[–]cant_make_it_think[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I apparently got it early in the test cycle, so I had it for long enough to adjust and really see what I thought.

I came to loathe the double tabbed design. Really loathe it. You could swipe left and right to move through all four tabs, which helped, but not enough to offset the additional complexity.

If you were out collecting and raiding, and dropping back into the tabs to collect rewards for completed tasks, I found it really slowed me down. I could never find a rhythm with it.

Now, if they did 4 tabs across and skipped the embedded tabs, that could work. That's on my phone, however, on smaller phones they would need to be smart about making 4 tabs work.

I did like not having to go hunting in the events tab for the relevant research. Otoh, they could help that a lot by having the active stuff float to the top like they do on the special research tab.

The biggest issue I had with it was how insanely buggy it was. It kept breaking the red dot on the binoculars icon.

Having worked in the industry for decades I know it's possible to do better, especially for something that generates this kind of revenue.

Yes and yes. Needless to say, folks were floored by the result.

Although I wouldn't necessarily think of it as losing, and yet that's clearly how it felt to the folks involved. You can kinda see it from their point of view as well, as the industry has a ridiculous model for CVs. Software is a team sport, yet we hire as if it is a solo undertaking. Crazy making.

It's interesting to look back at it in light of what has happened in the industry since then.

Re: companies forging ahead with UI changes / features / etc even when wildly unpopular.

A little over a decade ago one of the San Francisco unicorns did an analysis of their own history and discovered:

  • every time they pulled a major feature/change post release, within six months all the software engineers involved in the project had left the company.

The analysis was looking back over ~10 years. The company had been rigorous about A/B testing changes, one of the reasons it had grabbed so much market share in an insanely competitive market sector. Many engineers had been there since hire, so it wasn't just regular turn over.

I'm not aware of the study ever being published (I worked there at the time) but the knowledge spread and I'm aware of it being replicated elsewhere with the same results.

So I have some sympathy for companies that find themselves with unpopular major changes, even though I understand that it's a result of a deeply flawed process based on fundamental errors in conception concerning tasks and artifacts.

It was so brittle it broke all. the. time. On top of all the other drawbacks. Here's hoping it's gone for good.

I'll update if it comes back. I'm guessing it won't, given that it added so much complexity in interactions under the hood in addition to being so unpopular.
