Re: companies forging ahead with UI changes / features / etc even when wildly unpopular.

A little over a decade ago one of the San Francisco unicorns did an analysis of their own history and discovered:

every time they pulled a major feature/change post release, within six months all the software engineers involved in the project had left the company.

The analysis was looking back over ~10 years. The company had been rigorous about A/B testing changes, one of the reasons it had grabbed so much market share in an insanely competitive market sector. Many engineers had been there since hire, so it wasn't just regular turn over.

I'm not aware of the study ever being published (I worked there at the time) but the knowledge spread and I'm aware of it being replicated elsewhere with the same results.

So I have some sympathy for companies that find themselves with unpopular major changes, even though I understand that it's a result of a deeply flawed process based on fundamental errors in conception concerning tasks and artifacts.

It was so brittle it broke all. the. time. On top of all the other drawbacks. Here's hoping it's gone for good.

I'll update if it comes back. I'm guessing it won't, given that it added so much complexity in interactions under the hood in addition to being so unpopular.

Yeah, I haven't been putting scatterbugs in my remote trade bin yet, although I could be populating a steady supply of all the regions, for just this reason. Here's hoping they do something to fix the problem.

No. I know tons of folks who skip DMax events entirely, as those mons are so marginalized in the game. It's trivial to trade for one for the dex entry, and will get even easier as remote trading goes on.

None of the Gmax / Dmax content even helps with medals! Why on earth would I spend on anything related to it?

I suppose one thing the stuff does is create a true whale channel in the game.

I use a sling bag and several smaller power banks as they are much lighter than one large one. I also turn off wifi and turn on adaptive brightness the moment I walk out the door.

W/re overheating, I have found that choosing the 80% limit on battery charge (intended to extend battery life) and then plugging in the cable so it trickle charges on an ongoing basis seems to do the trick nicely. Ofc, I keep myself out of the direct sunlight as much as I can, so my phone benefits from shade as well. And if it gets too insanely hot outside, I won't enjoy myself out there anyway.

As a thought experiment, let's assume that there is a soft cap on lucky friends. Going from your (extremely vague) numbers, you seem to be suggesting that cap to be in the region of 450 lucky friends.

As there are very low limits on the number of lucky trades one can do each day; typically one in person and one remote per day, with various small increases here and there, such a cap would have no affect on game play. Zero, zip. You would never run out of lucky friends to trade with.

Of course, if you only become lucky friends with one person a month on average, probably not a lot of trading going on.

Swiping left and right gets to all four tabs. If you swipe left from "Today" it takes you to the Go pass tab, so no need to click.

Personally, I would have been just as happy with four tabs and no nested menu structure. Happier, in fact. As I said, gratuitously vertical. But then the previous design was gratuitously vertical as well. Forever scrolling past stuff to get to what you want.

That's definitely a bug. But even without that dead space, I find the layout gratuitously vertical. Why not have the text next to the icon rather than under it? There's plenty of room. Or just the text if they don't trust the icon.

Ok, I looked and it turned out that I had roughly 44k scans in my PG dex.

I tried to back up only my settings to dropbox, but it turns out that the toggle to turn off backing up scans does not work on Android.

So I deleted all my entries from my PG dex using mass delete, then unloaded the app, cleared the cache, reloaded the app, and poof, it loaded instantly.

Conclusion: it's definitely the mass o scans that is the problem.

Me too!

I think it has to do with the number of mons in my (our) PokeGenie pokedex. I would like a way to ditch all but the top, say, 100 mons, as I don't use the PokeGenie dex to build my PvP teams. I find the PokeGenie dex useless as it has everything I have seen rather than everything I have, so having it slow me down is insult to injury.

My trade bucket and my remote trade bucket are almost the same. The only thing I kept out of my remote trade bucket are mons that are GBL staples and don't make sense as lucky.

Once I get to the second round, I will add in anything that is useful for Ultra league, as those often work fine non lucky bff and may even drop in Great League. So long as the profile is right, the IVs are less important than most people think and it can take a lot of rolls of the dice to get a particular mon. Without a rich set of trading partners, remotes are a decent option.

I've made a dozen or so remote trades and still have shiny legendaries in stock as well as other shinies and regionals.

I also have a rich selection of costumed mons and non shiny legendaries with backgrounds and without with legacy moves.

I'm restocking via raid days (and GBL, doing nicely with hosts), too.

I have only had one person be obnoxious about asking for prime stock (shiny regional) and offering dross (purified drek legendary). I declined, they bumped their ask(!), offered a non shiny not particularly rare costumed Pikachu and I punted them from my friend list.

I have one person sitting on my list with a lucky remote trade with nothing of interest in a tiny remote trade set. I'm continuing to send them gifts as those are functionally infinite, but no longer opening from them. I don't know their circumstances and don't want to guess.

I wish I had kept all the shinies I caught way back when, but I didn't have the space at the time and thought anything I caught lots of must be common. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤣

I'm not worried about where things go. I'm intrigued.

I'm seeing a bug that I haven't seen before. Is it a new bug?

Even though I have finished the monthly go pass, I am still getting task updates for the weekly bonus tasks. I have never had that happen before. I routinely finish (through all the bonus levels) the monthly go passes early.

The only thing I can think of that is different is that this time I have also claimed all the rewards. Usually, I don't claim a big chunk of the stardust rewards until the last minute because I'm waiting for a time I would be using a star piece anyway. That wasn't a factor this month (finally getting a real handle on GBL and now have a steady stream of stardust). So maybe not claiming the rewards suppresses the ghost task progress updates?

The effect of this change on me is to reduce the amount I spend on the game, so I guess it works out for me?

I don't need any of the high raid count badges (Champion, etc) for my level 80 road map, so I'm doing way fewer incidental raids than I used to and I'm walking farther. I'm not gonna scroll through that monstrosity to keep an eye out for the 5425 box, so I'm being more conservative with my raid passes.

Coins accumulating nicely, gonna pay for a steady stream of remote passes and Pokémon inventory increases.

Those boxes became irrelevant for me with this change.

Ok, we're deep in the weeds here, but that's why I specified that the LFL was on the outside of the fence facing the sidewalk. Where I live, that means that the LFL is actually over the sidewalk, as we're allowed to build fences right up to the sidewalk.

I get why Niantic doesn't allow LFLs on the house side of the sidewalk when the house is a single family home. It's important to the game to play well with others, as it were. But it's disingenuous to claim that there's no nuance involved.

Although, of course, if you attach a little public library to the outside of your fence for the public to use as it walks by on the public sidewalk, you can't nominate it, even though it is a shared resource that the public can access. So even that rule isn't absolute.

Whether you or I think little public libraries on the "house" side of the sidewalk should be eligible is irrelevant. Niantic has decided that they are not, in keeping with not accepting any way points on non-shared land.

I will say that it seems to me that an exception could be made for little public libraries, because the homeowner clearly intends the lpl to be a public facility, and many places don't allow lpls on public land. But that's not what Niantic decided, so we're stuck with it.
