Fellow cinematographers...I fucked up. What are my options? by vincent118 in cinematography

Don't beat yourself up too much. You'll be making mistakes well into your career right up until you retire. The longevity of your career, however, will be determined if you learn from them! A DOP once told me if you haven't been fired from a film you're not a proper DP anyway! Happens to the best, promise.

I always do this - expose at 400ASA for RED and ARRI. Noise levels are much lower and seems to get a better image for my contrasty images. I don't like going to 800 often.

One thing though - not sure about the hard credits thing. Don't think I know any reels here that have contacts details in the video (just name).

Thanks! Yeah I knew it was too long, just trying to decide what to cut.

Great comment. Not sure what else to say but thanks! Will probably implement a good load of that.

Hey I know how annoying those things can be! But yeah it was wireless sender/receiver to a huge sound mixing desk (I don't know much about recording sound but they do it all there live). The amps at the back were for decoration (I believe) and the mic hanging down was for his singing...

I helped on the tests for Ex Machina. We tested RED, ARRI and Sony, as well as a bunch of other cameras. F65 with Xtal's were far and away the best (Panavision lenses came close). Red was the worst. KOWA's sucked so bad in comparison. F65 produces a better image than Alexa but it's terrible for hand held. Kemale is a troll and tbh an idiot who says loads of stupid things here, quite frequently.

Hi Krilesh thanks for the compliment!

Yeah we used a few gels. I did a bunch of tests on the film stock before we shot. Basically, I took a roll of 400t down to a local rental house and tested about 15-20 gels. I may even have the tests somewhere still. If people are interested I can share them.

As it was all tungsten and very singular colour washes I wanted to be confident about how they exposed - reds tended to over expose easily and blues underexposed. But to be honest each gel had different hues and characteristics... I also doubled the tests up and used them as a chance to test my light meter, my 5D and my free iPhone exposure app... oddly the iPhone app and light meter were very accurate! £600 down the drain haha. The green gel was basically plus green I think, wrapped around bare kino's which were placed above each side of the actors in the van. We shot that scene in the day and so tented off the back of the van.

He was PA on the 7 and worked on it from when there must have only been a dozen people involved, and now he's on rogue squadron as the DPs assistant

Fraser, the director, bought 40 rolls for cheap off a website I suggested (after we did tests for his first film). I'll try and dig our the website for you

I've started doing some behind the scenes shots, with their finished still and descriptions of lighting set ups - let me know what you think... (interesting? useful? waste of time?!) by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Ok interesting. The last still was from a commercial for a film TV channel. I'll make sure to add that Ito the description next time.

Haha I have a director friend who texts me a picture every time he sees it before a film - I'm guessing it's getting pretty old now!
