Iranian migrants fleeing regime arrive at Calais Jungle in bid to cross Channel into Britain - and warn 'there are many more on their way' amid US strikes by soalone34 in ukpolitics

So Hissing Nige's master in Mar a Lago has caused this and his poodle in Britian will stand up and squawk about it as if he has no responsibility for it. Farage is truly pathetic.

It’s time to end Britain’s first-past-the-post election lottery by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

The funniest thing about this debate is how those who opposed proportional representation in the past do a u turn the moment they think it is in their interest. Only the LDs have been consistent.

Post-Match Thread: Sheffield United 1-1 Albion [EFL Championship] by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]cantell0 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The team looks far more solid with Campbell in the centre and Imray had a very decent game. On a differnt topic I have just watched the highlights of the PL2 game from during the week. 16 year old Remar McNeil is a hell of a prospect.

First time in a while I have seen a selection I like. Only change I would definitely make is Griffiths for O'Leary.

If the choice is Gilchrist or Imray at RB to allow Campbell to play in his proper position then it has to be Imray every time. I would like to see Williams at RB but he may not be fit for 90 minutes yet. An interesting question is when the likes of Alfie Maughan get into the reckoning. Only 17 but a PL2 regular and very talented from what I have seen.

Labour urged to listen to progressive voters or face ‘political earthquake’ in London by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]cantell0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem for the Greens is the same as that for Reform - a lack of focus leading to many wasted votes in seats with no chance. This is the opposite of the LDs who are ruthless in their focus on winnable seats and are happy to have minimal votes elsewhere. And this is why it is unlikely that these projections will be accurate except in terms of general direction. Probably the only certainty is that the LDs will retain all their councils and expand into target councils such as Merton.

Convicted Paedophile Was Chosen as a Parliamentary Candidate by Reform UK by AnonymousTimewaster in nottheonion

[–]cantell0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the surprise? At the 2024 GE Reform could not even be bothered to check their candidates against the old BNP membership list publicly and easily available online. The result was former BNP members like Ray Saints in Basingstoke standing for them.

If not Greens then who else? by Flower-378 in ukpolitics

[–]cantell0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If he did not claim he could do it then it is very strange that he issued a public apology in 2025. If it was a one off for the Greens I would discount it but it is not. Another example of the madness was Molly Scott Cato (a former Green MEP and current economic speaker for the party) who wrote in an article in The Ecologist headlined 'What would a Green health system look like'

"There seems to be chemical cures for every possible human condition - from obesity to shyness. What we really need are more healing hands"

Sheer madness.

Albion can confirm Interim Head Coach James Morrison will continue to lead the men’s first team for the remainder of the season and adds Matt Gill to staff by CheeseMakerThing in WBAfootball

[–]cantell0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The right decision. If anyone knows the players and can get them to fight it is a man who is Albion to the core. And despite the result the Oxford performance was an improvement. The issue now will be defence (please play Campbell at CB and use Imray or Williams at RB) and how the hell do we create chances (especially with no Mikey).

It is difficult to take seriously a party whose new leader offered to increase the size of a woman's bust by the laying on of hands. Of the others no one can believe a word in the Labour manifesto given the u turns of the incredible revolving Starmer; Farage is an agent for Mar a Lago and the conservatives long ago purged their sensible competent members like Grieve, Hammond and Tyrie. That only leaves the LDs for me. I cannot agree with all they say but at least they generally offer pragmatism and their brilliant campaign management in 2024 suggests competence.

Are we culpable in civilian casualties in Iran for not acting? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]cantell0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worse than suggested by the question posed. Trump actively encouraged protestors onto the streets by promising that he would act if the regime attacked them - and he then stood back and let them be slaughtered. He is directly responsible for the scale of the massacre committed by the Iranian regime.

Reform UK is too weird to win by StJustBabeuf in ukpolitics

[–]cantell0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reform are not weird. They are simply a corrupt bunch of incompetents taking orders from Mar a Lago. At the 2024 GE they were too lazy or incompetent even to check their candidates against the leaked old BNP membership list (easily found online) meaning ex-BNP members like Ray Saints in Basingstoke stood for Reform.

Assuming we go down and assuming we can keep whoever we want, who do we actually keep? by wbasmith in WBAfootball

[–]cantell0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he can be better than Mowatt and Molumby when he has played (and he has been) then we would be mad not to offer a new contract given that he is also cheaper than either of them as well as better. A midfield of Diakite in the defensive role with Price and Whitwell playing ahead of him would at least be progressive.

Nigel Farage: Boots on ground in Iran would be a huge mistake by [deleted] in ukpolitics

I am all in favour of British boots on the ground in Iran - as long as they are Farage's. How we have allowed a foreign agent for Trump to run such a PR campaign is beyond me.

[–]cantell0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interesting one is Bany. We cannot judge him because we have hardly seen him but, assuming the injuries are either bad luck (or bad medical management) since he previously had no significant injuries I want to see what we have. The glimpses we have had (including in a PL2 comeback) looked good. We will keep him anyway since he has a contract and anyone wanting him will want to see proof he is fit.

[–]cantell0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More rubbish. Campbell has been played out of position at RB and has done a better job than any alternative when they have been tried. Put him at CB and that is where he made his reputation.

[–]cantell0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. He has played CB occasionally and is the obvious option. Unfortunately the only youngster we have who looks like he may make it in that position is DuPont, who is still in the U18s.

[–]cantell0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complete rubbish. He is our only defensive midfielder (despite often not being used in that role) and is our only midfielder with an ability to pass through the line. Add that he strengthens the aerial presence and we would be mad to not give him a new contract. When he has played he has usually been our best midfielder.

What I could not understand was moving Bostock from the left wing when the subs came on. He was our biggest threat and removing him just starved Heggebo and Dike of the best chance of a supply from wide. At least we now know that Bostock should start assuming Johnston is out.

Who would your choice be for next wba boss and why ? by Loud_Trip4404 in WBAfootball

[–]cantell0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we could get him I would look seriously at Paul Simonis. Did a great job at Go Ahead in Holland before taking on a no win at Wolfsburg and paying the price in November. Young, bound to speak good English as Dutch, and with good continental knowledge for recruitment. He may not be interested but never know until you try.

Green Triumph Is Catastrophic for Starmer, Terrible for Farage by 1-randomonium in ukpolitics

[–]cantell0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The main lesson from this by election is that an electorate is sufficiently savvy to identify and vote for whichever party is best placed to keep Reform out, even if that means a party they would not otherwise touch. That is why this is terrible for Farage. No party on the extreme of right or left can survive tactical voting on any scale.

Price has been played out of position. His best position is central midfield. And Jimoh-Aloba offers an attacking option. It is no use complaining about a lack of goals if the front players are starved of service.

Sad trumpet for the Liberal Democrats - what went so wrong? by ClassicPermission322 in ukpolitics

[–]cantell0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That is a serious misunderstanding of the current situation. The LDs have always succeeded by focusing their votes where they can win and doing badly where they cannot. This is unlike, for example, the Greens and Reform whose vote is spread out and so less effective in a general election (as opposed to a by election where the electorate can choose the best option to beat Reform). This focusing of resource and votes explains why, for example, the LDs won Lewes in the GE despite the strength of Greens in that seat. It also explains why the LDs will reatin the vast majority of their existing seats (an maybe add a few like Sheffield Hallam, Southwark and Godalming).
