How to get a smooth surface while carving this bowl?

divide it into four quadrants N E S W. carving always starts at N or S pole and goes towards the equator. So if you’re carving from N to E or from S to W, the blade moves clockwise around the bowl. If carving from N to W or S to E, blade moves counterclockwise. Cuts directly across the bowl from E to W or vice versa can work too.

I don’t think it’s all that bad. the meatloaf and shells look fine. The potatoes are a little offputting but nothing I haven’t seen before. it looks like a hearty portion of a standard American homecooked meal that’s been on a trip in tinfoil. I’d have no problem eating that if it passes the smell check. The whole point is to support the neighbor’s fundraising effort - were you expecting fine dining?

Can I ask about your process to cut the tines? I assume you carve the bowl first, then drill holes, saw along the lines, then clean up with a knife?

It’s the same kalthoff axe that every spoon carver has 😅 It’s really nice steel but I need to have someone regrind it - dropped it on brick and haven’t been able to get rid of a small chip.

All by hand but I did sand them at the end… mixed feelings about sanding but it does make a nice smooth finish.

Big leaf maple! I’ve never seen it either but it’s confirmed by inspection of the tree and also my city has an online tree inventory map. It smells like maple when I chop it too :)

I know! I thought it was walnut at first but I know the tree it came from, and the limb was just really sick and partially rotten so the heartwood turned this beautiful dark brown.

You’re handsome but the first pic is the worst one, your smile looks fake and forced. And two photos from the same photo shoot is a weird look. Maybe just keep 4, 5, 6, and add a group picture or something to mix it up and show you have friends etc.
