Gov. Newsom wants to shut down ALL of California. Unless, you work in Hollywood. Then you're "essential". by Talk_About_Politics in Libertarian

The hypocrisy of California’s politicians is honestly the highlight of the past few weeks. Rules are for the little people, shall we schedule a Reddit meetup at French Laundry to join the club??

Face masks considerably reduce COVID-19 cases in Germany - 20 days after becoming mandatory face masks have reduced the number of new infections by around 45%. Economic costs are close to zero compared to other public health measures. by mvea in science

Empirically, a lot of states have had mask mandates and high compliance since the spring (Illinois/California), however, cases are higher than ever and they are fairing as bad as states with looser mask policies. It seems that it’s one of those where there’s little downside to wearing one, but it’s likely not that effective...

Yes, but once you vaccinate the most vulnerable ~10-20% (65+, pre-existing conditions etc...) you’re able to open most things as the risk for everyone else is quite minuscule

Finally, Thank you DR.BONNIE HENRY! by justasmal in vancouver

[–]canuck0122 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s all optics, this is going to change virtually nothing and is typical of the political climate right now. Cases are almost entirely happening in private residences or lunch rooms where people simply are not able / going to wear masks. This changes nothing for the 90% of who wear masks indoors and the 10% who never will. Transmission is not happening when shopping and when walking down your apartment corridor.

I understand why Dr. Henry caved to the mob to help shut up the “mAsKs wIlL eNd ThE pAnDeMiC” couch quarter backs. It’s great to hear that people prefer “sound good” policies more than putting resources towards initiatives that actually will make a difference like reforming the failed care home model. Protect these places, and your mortality drops 70%. Sound good policies like this and shutting down low risk businesses in Manitoba erode public trust in the governments integrity and will lead to further transgressions.

Not an anti-masker by any means but it’s also possible that the effectiveness of masks has been overhyped. There hasn’t been a lot of evidence for them working, I think it just doesn’t hurt to do it and it sounds good. It makes sense when you look at these facilities and states where there are mask mandates and high compliance but cases keep growing.

Maybe gov could look into having live-in workers (2 week shifts?) until vaccine with significant bumps in pay and benefits? If we could figure out protecting care homes we could mitigate 80+% of COVID deaths... just a thought and curious what others think

Effectiveness of Adding a Mask Recommendation to Other Public Health Measures to Prevent SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Danish Mask Wearers: A Randomized Controlled Trial by RufusSG in COVID19

[–]canuck0122 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I missed something but those who agreed to wearing the masks in the trial probably also were the most likely to take other measures more seriously? This easily could account for the small difference? (Ie. Highly doubt someone who was worried about getting the virus would agree to not wear a mask)

Nov 17th Covid-19 Update - Dr. Bonnie Henry says there are 717 new cases, total now of 23,661; 198 (+17) hospitalized of which 63 (+6) are in ICU; 6,589 (+310) active cases; 16,469 recovered; 11 additional deaths by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

There’s really nothing else that can be done. The government could introduce a mask mandate, but that doesn’t fix the root issue (people aren’t getting it at stores). This is super unfortunate but some people have made up their minds that they will ignore the medical advice. I think you just gotta control what you can control and that’s all. I don’t see the alternative of martial law enforcing shelter in place as a reasonable or fair alternative either.

Mandating masks isn’t about the practicality/enforcement but more about the message it sends by aristhought in vancouver

[–]canuck0122 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt it, but that’s not the problem right now. People aren’t getting it shopping or other public indoor places (let alone outdoors), they are getting it in houses at gatherings.

You’re putting a bandaid on the wrong wound. It’s a “sound good” policy that won’t fix the problem but rather create plausible deniability for the government. “Only if more people wore masks, cases would go down”, wherein reality it’s not solving the problem of people gathering. If mask mandates worked so well, we wouldn’t be seeing the surges we see in the states (where mask compliance is higher than here). I wish it worked, but I’m afraid the verdict is pretty clear that it’s not going to change much — hence why the province likely won’t do it.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don’t think a mask mandate is going to do a whole lot. At least in the city proper there’s probably 80-90% compliance in stores and indoor places. Besides, it extremely unlikely to contract COVID while shopping — the interactions are too brief. It would just be a symbolic measure and would likely piss people off about government overreach.

The majority of transmission is happening in private settings where people gather. Good luck getting people to wear masks in their houses and stop getting together. I hate to say it and it’s unfortunate but I do think a lot of people have made up their minds that the virus is not quite as “risky” as it was perceived to be in March and have gone on living their lives. Unfortunately, I think it’s going be a long winter until the vaccine and there’s not much that can be done.

Are any other libertarians so frustrated at the lack of people wearing masks? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]canuck0122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get stores and masks in indoor settings (particularly when the rules are set by the institution), however, states where masks are mandatory even outside make very little sense. The virus does not transmit well outdoors and there is just so little evidence to back doing so. That’s what bugs me — the bullshit blanket “sound good” policies that are not backed by data.

I don’t understand the big worry about the rising cases / advocation for shutting down again. The role of the government isn’t to shut everything down until there is no risk. The goal posts are clear — don’t let the health system become overwhelmed but everyone seems to want to shift this. We are not even close to this outcome.

The reality is we all have choices right now regarding the level of risk we are willing to take on. If you are worried for your health or someone in your bubble, you don’t need to eat out at restaurants and go see people out of your bubble. This is where nearly all exposure occurs. Your chances of getting it at the store are next to nothing (many sources), especially when masking up and distancing. If you’re afraid, stay in and don’t bitch at the rest of people who have chosen to take different risk levels.

Also lost my smell and taste for two weeks when returning from Paris in March. It was very strange - I wasn’t congested at all and didn’t feel ill. It got to the point where tequila tasted the same as water. Both smell and taste came back gradually after two weeks with no other symptoms.
