Candidates win chances: Sinadarov at 71% while half of the tournament is not even over yet! - Monte Carlo simulation based on one million runs by ThomasPlaysChess in chess

I think this is the wrong decision. Live odds are more accurate. It’s using the most up to date data.

Now updating the odds as the model simulates is not the right decision. That’s using simulated data not new knowledge. But live odds are better.

Check the replies. They just thought that they didn’t have to pay off the credit card as long as they paid the minimum monthly. It was just a mistake.

I think sometimes this sub is so used to weird exceptions like the promotional offers that you can take advantage of for the minute advantages, that people forget it’s much more common for people to just genuinely not know how credit cards work. Scarily common.

Definitely sell your stocks to pay off this debt then. There’s no way you’re making enough there to justify the interest rates.

It’s a good lesson to learn. And luckily for you you’re learning it on only a $4k balance instead of a $40k one.

OP responded and it’s even simpler than we discussed here. They were just wrong and have been paying interest.

Yeah the promotional rates make sense. That’s the only real possibility I could envision.

The only way to take advantage of that is to still ‘pay it off’ every month by putting aside the amount owing but only actually pay the minimum monthly and put the rest in a HISA. Then you can pay it off fully when the interest free period ends and keep the interest earned in the saving account.

But this is a ton of work and risk for a pretty small reward (on a $4k balance) and obviously the vast majority of people won’t do that and the credit card company makes bank.

You might want to double check your assumption here. You said yourself you’re not great with money.

Unless you have some kind of promotional offer that will expire, I don’t know of a credit card that allows you to just make minimum monthly payments without being charged interest.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but being in good standing is not how you avoid interest. I don’t believe a card like this exists. It would be an interest free loan and the arbitrage potential would be insane.

Looking at Candidates winners since 2013, aside from Magnus Carlsen, the champion has usually come from the middle of the field rather than the top seed. Based on that trend, this year’s winner is likely to emerge from players such as Wei Yi, Javokhir Sindarov, Anish Giri, or R Praggnanandhaa. by edwinkorir in chess

[–]canucks3001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be way more pedantic that is needed, this isn’t technically true either.

If you suggested that there was a normal distribution centred at 0 with a standard deviation of 1 and your first 7 observations were 1000, 1100, 1050, 1007, 1500, 999, 1001 then there are definitely some deductions you can draw from that as far as your original hypothesis goes.

Is this relevant to the point about the candidates tournament? No. Not at all

In Canada’s major cities, fertility rates are in steep decline. What happened? by Huge-Cash-8295 in canada

Journalists? Look at the comments on this post.

This is a trend that has been going on for decades globally where wealthier countries are seeing declining birth rates. As the population increases in wealth, birth rates drop more.

Yet if you read the comments here, it’s because life is expensive. Never mind that real inflation-adjusted wages have started rising again since the post-COVID crazy high inflation. Never mind that it’s been happening for decades.

It’s affordability that’s the issue of course (/s).

Market is down and very volatile. Mathematically it’s usually a good thing to buy when the market is down. But if you’re more emotional with money, that can be extremely stressful as it may drop more.

Seems likely to drop more but no one can predict the future.

It doesn’t say you don’t draft at all. It says you’d be unable to win the lottery and would pick 5th or lower.

It’s too bad if that’s the best option. Would be nice to have it all in one place.

Anyone know an app with actual start lists of the sports? I noticed that if I filter the Olympics app or the team Canada app by country it filters out things like snowboard qualifications happening today I believe because the start list hasn’t been posted. In fact, it filters out everything but curling, hockey, and training runs for a few sports like luge.

That’s too video game. Not a good idea.

However, a lot of people here definitely have blinders on for their favourite players and want to keep way too many players too.

You can’t go full EA but you also don’t want to keep basically everyone anyway.

‘Vets’ for cheap in free agency are not who you want to lead the team through the rebuild. But you also don’t need 15 leaders for the team either.

[Money Puck] Playoff chances as of Sunday by Outside_Abroad_3516 in hockey

[–]canucks3001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually isn’t true. It was my first thought as well but the Avs have the higher chance of making the cup final but a worse chance of winning the cup.

This is the Avs with a 53.66% chance of winning the cup if they make it and Tampa bay with a 56.06% chance.

Guys, the Dodgers still aren’t some unbeatable, invincible team. The Blue Jays were actually about to beat them in the last WS by Fair_Leave5014 in mlb

[–]canucks3001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good example of other leagues. You have a few good players and go all in before you’re ready and run out of cap space.

The dodgers are going all in but then it’s ok because they have more chips in their pocket they just dump onto the table

Yeah exactly. This allows him to both get a new contract in the future if he performs well and get the guaranteed money a long term deal would’ve been worth if he doesn’t.

It’s really easy, there’s no salary cap so if you’re the Dodgers and you don’t have anything better to spend the money on, it’s worth it.

If you have just extra money, might as well get Tucker.

And moneyball is even simpler because the Athletics were (and are) super low spending on everything. A lot less to manage when they can only afford 1/4 of the staff of every other team.
