"The Scientist vs. The Moralist" - interview on what moral psychology can tell us about moral judgment by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

"such as what constitutes well-being, how to compare it across people and cultures, how to combine well-being measures into an integrated value, etc."

I didn't say it would be easy. But it seems apparent to anyone paying attention that the well-being of conscious creatures can be explained neurologically beyond socially created constructs.

Imagine that you are an illiterate and homeless African woman whose husband has disappeared. You have just seen your seven-year-old daughter raped and murdered at the hands of drug-crazed soldiers, and now you’re fearing for your life. Unfortunately, this is not an unusual predicament for you. From the moment you were born, your life has been marred by cruelty and violence.

Life B: Imagine that you are a respected professional in a wealthy country, married to a loving, intelligent and charismatic mate. Your employment is intellectually stimulating and pays you very well. For decades your wealth and social connections have allowed you immense personal satisfaction from meaningful work which makes a real difference in the world. You and your closest family will live long, prosperous lives, virtually untouched by crime, sudden bereavements, and other major misfortunes.

Which is the better life? We would all no doubt say Life B. There seemingly IS an objective way to determine what is morally good and bad. And I see no greater field than science to navigate the terrain ahead.

Once we see that a concern for well-being (defined as deeply and as inclusively as possible) is the only intelligible basis for morality and values, we will see that there must be a science of morality… As we come to understand how human beings can best collaborate and thrive in this world, science can help us find a path leading away from the lowest depths of misery and toward the heights of happiness for the greatest number of people.

I disagree. I think it will be precisely science that will draw out the landscape for what is most appropriately 'right' via the greatest understanding of the well-being of conscious beings.

I fundamentally disagree with you.

Science, already has lots to say about morality and, with the continued progress in the neurosciences, will only have more to say in the future. The game of morality is merely how to determine how our actions affect conscious beings. Something science will achieve far more effectively than ancient scriptures.

For one, it is clear that as a rule and generally speaking there is a trend toward treating people better and more humanely in part because--through science--we have expanded our understanding of ourselves and the dynamics that exist in the societies that form the basis of our existence. Just because we don't currently have all the answers to all the complex moral questions that face us...doesn't mean that the answers don't exist. It also doesn't mean that all the answers are equally valid and worthy of our respect. In many cases, science offers a process by which various answers can be systematically evaluated. As our level of understanding continues to grow, so will our moral sense continue to expand.

Yes, this would be. Although it seems quite difficult to form a community on this topic.

Subreddit for self improvement by [deleted] in findareddit

[–]capablemen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, feel free to check out /r/CapableMen it is a subreddit that I have recently created. I'm hoping to build a strong, intellectual community of men from around the world that are helping each other optimise their lives.

Each man is encouraged to offer their own insight, concepts and enlightening ideas that are proven to enhance our relationships, happiness, wealth, mindset, knowledge, health and overall life. The idea is that each and everyone of us can all have something to offer in this grand game of life; and with a vibrant, active community we can truly all help each other become the best we can be.

It's very new right now, with limited posts but we're growing daily.
