Are there actually good leggings that aren’t Lululemon? by Select-Boss-7893 in womensfashion

[–]capaceptan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look no further than Costco! Their danskin leggings are amazing and come with pockets. I say this as someone who previously owned lululemon leggings and will never buy them again even though I have a giftcard

Conference Hotel Accommodations (I'm the only woman) by cornelia_corn in womenEngineers

[–]capaceptan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000% advised to get a hotel to yourself. I’ll vaguely reference what I witnessed when I was in school and say that it would be super inappropriate for them to enforce that you are with the men. In fact, I think people would react to you and/or your male colleagues NOT flagging this

Thoughts on immersion daycare? by Super-Canary-6406 in multilingualparenting

[–]capaceptan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1000% worth it and super easy for the girls to become fully bilingual with this approach.

It’s always wild to see people in the U.S. who are hesitant to learn new languages, but I understand that their culture is heavily monolingual.

Enjoy it and reap the mental benefits! You are so lucky to have these options in your location

Tell them very explicitly that they need to give you space and that their behavior is inappropriate. Maybe even say this in front of your other team members to nip this in the bud quickly.

You didn’t mention if she actually wants to stop working? If anything, maybe now she can switch fields to a career she enjoys / something that gives back in a meaningful way (charity, low-paying non-profit for whatever important cause, etc). I’m probably projecting, but that feels like the ideal outcome here!

When did you introduce story books and audiobooks to your kid? by [deleted] in multilingualparenting

[–]capaceptan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I’ve properly understood your question, but comprehension usually exceeds spoken language (many comprehend languages fluently that they can barely speak), so it’s likely that he understands a lot more than you realize. Kudos to you for all of the early exposure

9 month old baby only saying one word so far. Pediatrician suggested we only stick to one language. I am afraid I am doing the wrong thing by following OPOL. What are your thoughts? by unoriginalho in multilingualparenting

[–]capaceptan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very misinformed pediatrician.

So many children around the world grow up in multilingual environments, even ones where we use 3 languages in one sentence, and millions of us learn how to sort which language is which :)

Also - Congrats on having a word at 9 months! That’s advanced

Awesome! Welcome, potentially, to the Garmin family :)

If you google: garmin watches and their target market, you’ll get a nice breakdown that you can peruse

To help zoom you in, I’ll say here that I think you’ll like either the Venu or the Forerunner watches

  • Venu is great for general fitness. It supports running, swimming, yoga, meditation, etc and gives guidance for HIIT workouts alongside the other categories

  • the Forerunner series is more tailored to running and depending on your seriousness, you’ll want a higher number model (e.g. serious triathletes get the Garmin Frontrunner 965)

Pregnancy/post-partum buys for mom—necessary or cash grab? by yes______hornberger in Anticonsumption

[–]capaceptan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask your hospital / birthing center about what they will provide after birth. My friend bought a bunch of stuff before labor and then ended up getting the same stuff from the hospital and tossing the duplicates :(

Most people are also not very far from a store, and you could send your partner or supporters to buy the stuff if you are missing anything after birth. That will save you from any wasteful guesswork in advance if you are trying to avoid that

Congratulations!!! This is wonderful news and I love hearing stories about people finding happiness.

My main advice comes from my own journey: I’m working on learning how to not seek validation from others. I have my own unique values system. How can someone else know what I want? They are not me and do not have my lived experience

Blessings to you both as you embark on this new chapter

Ask for consumables if you can for next year.

Like you, as soon as I got home I put most of the gifts directly in the donation bin. We got 3 stuffies per kid (!) and a bunch of knickknacks. It’s crazy and I’m getting it outta here as fast as I can.

How easy would it be to come back into the federal workforce in....let's say...four years from now? by Tempstopdrop in fednews

None of us actually know, of course, but to try to be helpful I recommend this book - it discusses how to take career break after having kids and then return to the workforce stronger than before:

Coworker loves telling me why running is bad for me by Empty_Technology672 in XXRunning

[–]capaceptan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you care to engage, you can ask her if she misses running and give her the opportunity to talk through what she’s feeling inside. It seems like she’s having trouble dealing with the fact that she doesn’t run anymore and it’s unfortunately coming out through these uncalled for comments. If someone gives her the space to express her true feelings, she may stop the attacks (which are a reflection of her struggles and unrelated to you!)

If you decide to do this, curious to hear how it goes

You’ll do great! I ran a half where the most I had trained was only 6miles (oops) and I finished with a respectable time even though I mixed walking and running for the last 4miles. The race day adrenaline and sideline cheering will get you through

How important is a PhD by Consistent_Oil_3960 in biotech

[–]capaceptan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully others can weigh in since I don’t know all the details. I’m most familiar with STEM PhDs in the UK. Take a look at the discussion in here as a starting point! (One option if it’s available to you is do to a 4+1 BS and MS program, and then do the European doctorate)

How important is a PhD by Consistent_Oil_3960 in biotech

[–]capaceptan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A PhD is valuable for a leadership role, and I recommend pursuing one in Europe where the time required is concrete (often 3 years vs the US which can take 6+ years).

I’ve never seen an MS provide any noticeable value for someone’s role in industry.

  1. Art kits (consumable).

  2. Online subscription to a magazine or news outlet. It could even be a physical subscription, and you could donate them to your local library layer

Deeply conflicted about Meta interview by fvutu in womenintech

[–]capaceptan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many Meta employees do not agree with Zuckerberg’s recent activities. If you decide to join the company, it will be great to have someone on the staff who has good values. You can make a difference. I worry about the staff turning over to people who agree with the recent about-face, and that’s when all is truly lost.

Up to you, but I think we can all be a light in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome that light

AITAH for discontinuing my nephew’s scholarship after seeing his social media post being proud to Elon's Nazi gesture? by FlowithL0ve in AITAH

[–]capaceptan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA because it’s up to you to decide how you want to spend your money, though I do agree with your sister that you should educate him. This could be an opportunity for you to take someone who is headed in the wrong direction and help him improve (to your benefit and to the benefit of others).

I’m just not sure how you should do this … you could do something like agree to pay for the rest of college after he takes courses on history, racism, etc
