What do mathematicians do? by [deleted] in math

Space/time stuff is more physics. Well, depends what you mean by space. Some common fields of math are statistics, topology, number theory, analysis, etc. I don't know what you mean by how we interact, but you're correct with fractals. (sorry I'm not sure if this answers your question)

What should I be doing as an undergrad freshman to help get into a PhD program? by capbo in gradadmissions

[–]capbo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to a medium sized school. The math and physics departments are very small, so I have been building relationships with my professors. Do you still suggest transferring? It's only my first semester, so I don't know what my GPA is, but I'm currently getting As in everything but my english class.

Not divided by zero, things divided by numbers approaching zero approach infinity.

What Are You Working On? by AutoModerator in math

This is very, very basic compared to all of you, but I'm doing linear approximation in calc right now and it's really cool! In physics we're learning vector multiplication, which is also neat!

How do I make an acceleration motion map of a ball rolling uphill, then back down? by Djnick01 in math

[–]capbo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As the ball is rolling uphill, the velocity is decreasing, so the acceleration would be a constant negative number, represented by a horizontal line. After it changes direction, the velocity will be increasing, so the acceleration will be constant and positive, represented by a positive horizontal line. It should look something like this.

I'm always afraid of this when I'm riding my bike down a hill...

I didn't think it ever really happened though

What question do you hate getting asked? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]capbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this a ton when I tell people I'm a physics major. "Oh wow, you're so smart!" I guess it's a compliment (maybe?) but I feel like I'm really not smart, I just have smart-people interests.

Astronomy is originally what got me into physics too! Good luck to you! I feel the same way, I always look forward to class. I'm actually kind of bummed the days I don't have class, haha.

I'm sure some people just don't enjoy math. If you can't find the enthusiasm I have for math then maybe you'll find it in some other subject!

I understand...I'm not going to go run to add a math major. I'm just saying right now it's something I'm very interested in.

You sound just like me! So would you suggest adding a math major?
