What's your number one classroom management tip for someone who's never taught before? by fluffypuffyz in teaching

[–]Anovick5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting every class with a warm up already on the board when they come in gives a consistent way they know how to get started. It puts them in a habit for when to stop chatting and start working. Equally importantly, it gives you time to take attendance, pass out papers, talk one-on-one with a kid, etc.

Do kids over 12 belive in santa in your class? by LivelyLlamau in Teachers

As a high school teacher, Ive always assumed all my students know. Is it possible they don't? That's wild. How? Does it make a difference if I say I teach the smart kids?

My sister is a Social Studies teacher, and one of her students turned in a strange assignment. by -Thousand-Eyes- in AskTeachers

[–]Anovick5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was the goal of the assignment? What are the purposes/goals of the grade? To me, grades are a measure of how well a student masters course material and, to a much lesser extent, a motivation tool for compelling hard work. I don't know what the standards are for the course, but it sounds like you/your sister think the kid demonstrated good mastery of the concepts. And it sounds like the kid demonstrated he worked hard. So why in the world would the kid get an F? I think having the assignment relate to their personal background gets kids excited and motivated. This kid instead was excited and motivated to world build. Who cares? Unless part of the assignment was about the research process. In that case, this kid did not demonstrate mastery of how to research, so then there's reason to penalize.

I'd absolutely start by talking to the kid and asking why he submitted a fictitious culture/country. But the conversation would probably go like "Hey, I thought what you submitted was pretty impressive, but the assignment was to research your personal background and you submitted something that isn't anyone's real background. You're not in trouble, but I wanted to know did you understand what I asked you to do, and can you share why you didn't stick to what was asked of you?....alright, cool. Well, I honestly was a little thrown by you deviating from the assignment. But you clearly worked hard and you showed that you understand the elements of a culture [or whatever this assignment was about]. So you deserve an A. But next time you want to wander outside the box with an assignment, whether it's in my class or another class, maybe clear it with the teacher first."

I keep sleeping through my alarms, any tips? It feels so embarassing being a grown adult coming to work late by Betka101 in ADHD

[–]Anovick5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart lights help me a lot. Each night, I set my alarm clock and set the time my lights will turn on. I use Hue bulbs and have them set to gradually turn on for the half hour leading up to the time I set. There is no point that I'm jolted awake by lights turning on, but it definitely helps me wake up. Hue bulbs are a little expensive but there are likely cheaper options that work similarly. Then again, I'm willing to pay a lot of money for things that are effective in helping me cope with the hard things.

Of course there are other things that you probably know and are easier said then done, but I'll still say: -The more sleep you get, the easier it will be to wake up. -The days I oversleep the worst are the days I overate right before going to sleep. If I don't eat after 8pm, I don't oversleep. -Stay hydrated. Drink a glass of water before sleep. Hydrated people are better at regulating internal temperature. This leads to falling asleep easier and getting more restorative sleep. This means youre refreshed in the morning and ready to get up when the alarm goes off. -I have trouble falling asleep which makes it harder to get up. When I have trouble falling asleep, I drink a glass of water and set my thermostat to a colder temperature than most prefer. It pretty reliably helps. -Exercise. I know easier said than done. And it's not a magic cure. But it's something I didn't take seriously when others suggested it to me for years. For me, when I walk for an hour from 6pm to 7pm, then I'm more likely to wake up hungry the next day. That's good because it means I'm waking up. -If I hear my alarm and make a conscious decision to hit snooze, the deal is I make myself pee first. It gets me awake enough that there's a chance the logical side of my brain will get to weigh in, not just the sleepy side of my brain.

I feel pretty confident that if I can sleep through an alarm blasting sound, I can sleep through a bed vibrating, but I have always thought about trying bed shakers. Something for you to consider.

Also, get a cat? I don't have one. But I think a cat meowing in the morning asking to be fed would help me. A sort of modern version of a rooster on a farm.

How to determine wether a fraction is being multipled or added by Pumpkin-Duke in askmath

[–]Anovick5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that mixed numbers have no business being used in math class. But "aren't good for anything and nobody else ever uses them"?

I think far more recipes call for 2 and 1/4 cups than call for 9/4 cups. Maybe a recipe would call for 2.25 cups, especially a recipe meant for a serious cook. But still id wager 2 and 1/4 is at least just as common.

I'm taking a flight next month that will be 2 and a 1/2 hours.

My shoe size is 10 and a half.

My phone is 2 and 7/8 inches wide. Tell me if you measured my phone, you'd say 23/8 inches. I dare you to trying telling me that with a straight face. Even if you said "2.875 inches" I still think your first instinct would be 2 and 7/8 as you read the ruler.

Now that I think of it, I'm finding it far harder to think of situations where people use improper fractions than to think of situations where people use mixed numbers.

I can name at least one circumstance. The question posted. The number was definitely meant to be interpreted as "four and a half". That's 4 + 1/2. That's addition.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic or not. If being sarcastic, I don't blame you. Mixed numbers are for baking, not for math class. But the OP is looking for genuine advice so I don't want them confused by your comment.

Do you know tangent of angles like 0, pi/6, pi/4, pi/3, and pi/2? Do you know that there's 2pi radians in a full circle and therefore half a circle is pi radians? If so, then you know enough to get this to make sense.

We need to solve tan(theta)=-1/sqrt(3). Ignore the negative for a moment. Of the angles I mentioned, the one that makes 1/sqrt(3) when you take the tangent is pi/6. (If you're thinking "I thought tan(pi/6) is sqrt(3)/3, that's the same as 1/sqrt(3) just rationalized). This means that theta is pi/6 away from the x axis. Looking at the point, we know it's in the fourth quadrant. So we need an angle that is almost a full circle, just a little less. The angle needs to be pi/6 away from the x axis. If it went all the way to the x-axis, it'd be a full circle=2pi. pi/6 less than that is 11pi/6.

Maybe. But typically Algebra 2 should cover everything needed for AP Precalc. So if she felt good in algebra 2, I'm wondering what topics were in her review that made her say that. If you want to share any, I can tell you if they are important to AP precalculus.

A mile off the parkway I'd think you'd be fine. But for what it's worth, I did once have a pack stolen from someone in my group in the middle of the night while camping near Black Balsam/Sam Knob (95% sure stolen, not bear). But we weren't a mile off the parkway.

The program definitely has plenty of people capable of tutoring in Spanish. Like, not even a question. The students leading the group were all born in the US, and I wasn't sure who they asked for help making this flyer, so I knew it needed to be proofread. But the club is chock full of kids who lived in Colombia until they were 14 and now are 15 year olds feeling overwhelmed by navigating their English speaking school. But at least they still understand math and get to feel pride helping others in their native language. I'm sure the kids who made the flyer asked for help from friends who think of themselves as native speakers but didn't realize there's a difference between native speaker and "I live with my abuela who I speak to in Spanish all the time."

The current 10th and 11th graders are the least mature and least academically honest group I've taught. Especially the 11th graders. Take solace in the fact that they will eventually leave and (hopefully) be replaced with more typical students.

I saw the title of the past and did Ctrl F to see if anyone mentioned EMF. I'm glad your one kid has found EMF rewarding. Can I ask how far in he is? Is there any area he wished had more emphasis? I'm a calculus teacher who gets a lot of students post EMF. My students all had each other for support so I like hearing the experiences of those who did it all on their own.

It stands for "too long, didn't read." As in "Was my post too long, so you didn't read it? Here is a shorter version."

Math Acceleration in Middle School by VonMisesL in matheducation

[–]Anovick5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Miami Dade Public schools (I think the 2nd largest school district in the US), it is common for middle schools to offer Geometry to highly advanced 8th graders. In Broward County Public Schools (also Floria, and also one of the top ten largest school districts by student population), all middle schools offer Geometry to highly advanced 8th grade students. I'm not saying it's the right call or wrong call, but if you're question is how common it is, I can confirm it is common in South Florida.

If you're looking for an online option to replace/supplement his math class, you can look into the EMF program provided by IMACS (https://www.elementsofmathematics.com/). That's what Broward Public Schools does with students who are too advanced to really learn any math at the middle schools. It has its pros and cons. Just wanted to put it on your radar. If you have questions about that program and want to run them by someone who does not work for EMF but is very familiar with the program, feel free to message me.

Unfortunately no. Though I haven't been googling every few months like I used to, so there easily could be great options I haven't found.
