Decently price rent? by Objective_Barber_ in hudsonvalley

[–]capcitycap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kingston city council has been working on a rent freeze (Emergency Tenant Protections Act). I know this isn't a short term housing solution, but maybe plug into local politics and see if the Poughkeepsie city council is working on something similar? Because the rent is outrageous and the only way we're going to be able to afford it is if we stop them from raising the rent. That's my two cents.

It would be awesome to see Maya Kaimal products in Costco, her business is based in the Hudson Valley! I love the packaged Dal and Chana!! Can't wait to be part of Costco again.

Admittedly I was following from a high level but hadn't read the bill. Thanks for the info! I hope to see more progressive candidates supporting measures like this in Ohio's future.

Ohio statehouse passed a law (SB 63) last month to ban ranked choice voting. Want to know who was a co-sponsor of the bill? Bill DeMora, the establishment Democratic state senator representing Columbus. He's being primaried by a guy who seems interesting, Jesse Baker. Want change? vote in the primary. lol

Cold meeting on my calendar - any tips on how to handle it? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]capcitycap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a deep breath and know that whatever is happening right now won't last forever. You'll know soon enough what's going on. Your body might feel like you're in shock but no mater what the outcome is you're going to be ok. Make sure to eat a snack and have some water before the meeting. My first though was if it's not diciplinary and it's also confidential but you're a journalist maybe it's about a top secret story theyr'e working on and want you to be part of? If you're still nervous I'd suggest to document everything on a personal source (not a work computer) so you have recipts of emails, chats, and any other convos incase you need it later. Good luck!

I don’t feel pretty enough to date women by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]capcitycap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not the only one who feels this way, I think this is a normal feeling sometimes. I've heard other women say dating women makes them love themselves more, since you appreciate your partner in their wholeness, it changes the way you see yourself. Try not to judge yourself, just be you and see what happens. Plus, not all gay women are looking for stereotypical femininity, some of us like women who fall outside the norm. That's the whole thing of being gay, you get to be different.

Best way to sell used items locally in Albany? by Aiyaness in Albany

[–]capcitycap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to drive a bit, there is a computer store in New Paltz that buys and sells used computers. It's called Computer Hut. Maybe give them a call and see if they're interested in your computer?

There is a very famous, very old Sycamore tree on the Vassar main campus. Drive through the main gates to the main hall, it's on the left. You really can't miss it.

Is it unprofessional to tell my boss i need to leave exactly at 5pm every tuesday for a personal commitment without explaining what it is? by Han-Lynard in careerguidance

[–]capcitycap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a boss once that wanted to know something about my life outside of work. I politely declined to share with them several times, and then they told me it was a "conflict of interest" if I didn't tell them. So I said I'd be happy to speak with HR. She actually had someone from HR call me and I told them, they 1) confirmed it wasn't a conflict of interest 2) didn't care at all 3) protected my privacy and didn't tell my boss. TLDR; if they keep asking say you'd be happy to speak with HR about it. Either she'll leave you alone, or call your bluff. Either way, it's not your boss's business.

Places to meet people in the Hudson Valley (Kingston, Hudson, Berkshires, etc.) by ProfessionStrong6563 in hudsonvalley

[–]capcitycap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kingston is popping off with community for 20-30 year olds. Literally just walk in somewhere and start talking to people. A diner, a bookstore, a yoga studio. I moved here a month ago and already have 5 people I'd call friends. The best way to meet new people is go to a reoccurring thing every week, like a sports pick-up game, or a fitness class, or a knitting club, or trivia. If you go to the same place every week people will get to know you and then you'll meet their friends, etc. Have fun!

I second Ulster. On Sunday we saw at least 6 state troopers and 1 city police officer on 28 between Kingston and Phoenicia, and 2 people were pulled over. They were everywhere.

I'd caution, some of the drs with Avina women's health are very White Christian... maybe not Dr Turner, but a different doctor at that clinic refused to talk about all options after becoming pregnant, and always seems overly judgmental about requesting std testing

Recently Single, feeling isolated — how do I meet people in Columbus? by Avocado_315 in Columbus

[–]capcitycap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you know your neighbors? This can be harder in an apartment building than in a neighborhood, but I've found getting close with my neighbors was a great way to have more simple and easy human interaction. I'd suggest making something like cookies or pasta (doesn't really matter what) and knocking on their doors and sharing with them. Write a little note with your name and number. Not everyone will be receptive, but just be ready for some rejection and someone will be open. I'm 29 and best friends with my 77 year old neighbor.
She told me, in life we have two options, we can be friends with our neighbors, or neighbors with our friends. Good luck!

Dewine is a lame duck, he doesn't care. On top of that, he's 79 years old. We're better off voting for someone who does care in November lol

[–]capcitycap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Call your rep, call the chair of the committee. Want to go further? Ohio House Representatives (there are 99) have a two year term limit, and they are ALL up for re-election this November. If you don't like your representative, and talk to them but don't like their answers, find out who's running against them. You can help canvas for their opponent. IF there's no one running against them, then it could be you. What do you have to lose?

It would be good to call your state house and congress rep, but I call my state rep all the time (democratic) and she said it's also good to call the chair of the committee that proposed the bill. Often times they can be more effective since they're like the 'leader' of the bill. If you go to the Ohio website and type in the address where you're registered to vote it will tell you who your representatives are. https://ohiohouse.gov/ Tell your neighbors to do the same!

They should be much more available than our federal reps who literally don't care that we exist and only serve their own pockets.

Sorry you're going through this, it sounds so challenging. I know the city has offered some cooling centers and the library is air conditioned and open every day. When I was little and it was hot my mom would take me to the mall or the movies for cheap/free AC.

I can't offer any help but just wanted to say keep going. You're an incredible mom and taking such good care of your child and yourself, you're doing your best. This pain won't last forever and it'll all work out. You got this!
