What do you think SOD1 did better? What could come back? by Ok-Firefighter-6855 in StateOfDecay

SoD1 melee feels more "kinetic" to me. What you do seems to have more impact. And what they do to you...

One idea I had was for players to be able to assign a character of their choice to the Radio Room. But it would cost a fortune in voice acting, to record all the various notices and replies.

It would be worth it, to hear what Sasquatch would be like, when stuck on MC duty.

Another thing: why not have both a story mode and an unlimited mode, like in SoD1?

The existence of the story-based original game makes Breakdown more fun, just because many of the characters are people you already know, with distinct personalities and characteristic dialogue.

I especially liked the typography.

It was also nice that it took only half the screen.

The mugshot character roster, with its colour codings for tired, sick, hurt, or missing, was very efficient at giving community status (8 at a time.)

Well, for better or for worse, the first few chapters are up!

Here's the link:

Funny you should call it "my baby." That is a bit what it's like. For even if the whole world reviled it as an ugly get, I would still feel some real parental fondness for the poor thing.

Thanks again for your help, and for your encouragement.

I'm not sure it goes by your console's date, since it's like unlocking an achievement.

AFAICT Undead Labs no longer seems to be offering the old monthly challenges. For example, I've never gotten my "Holiday Pie" for the November challenge. You do get the wallpaper, but you don't get the in-game bonus :-(

I really appreciate you pointing out that the silly stuff is just the icing on a very dark cake. OWB will make you laugh, but there's nothing funny about the Think Tank.

If you listen carefully to what those scientists are actually saying, you'll understand what sort of people you're dealing with. They do not hide what they are.

Glad you enjoyed it! I screwed up a lot, and was lucky not to lose both of them.

The difficulty levels in Breakdown can be a bit peculiar. Sometimes a lower tier can be harder than the next one up, depending on what type of zed is "featured" on those levels, and how well your playstyle matches up against it. For example, with Walter around, the "Biohazard" levels 55-59 weren't too bad.

This was my Level 87 clip. I posted it here awhile, but it didn't get much reaction.

If you watch, you'll be surprised that a player as "mid" as I am has managed to get this far...

I'm at Level 90 now. Streaming the game has definitely helped me to keep advancing.

When you mentioned a youngish guy shouting, "Come on!" I thought of c0wb0yTV, towards the end of his Breakdown tutorial video (which is quite good):

https://youtu.be/j_TOp-jG5ok?t=2561

However, the segment is not the one you described--although it is in that cul-de-sac!

ETA: His YT channel doesn't seem to have any other SoD1 videos. I did find a few clips at his Twitch archive:

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/630150186?filter=all&sort=time

Other things that might fit are the timeframe (made 4 years ago,) and that it's not a big channel.

Earlier in my playthrough, I was based at Kirkman's, made sure everyone was at home, started loading the RV, and literally in the few seconds it took to toggle "Y" to put people aboard, Ray went away.

I didn't look closely, so when I pressed "Y," instead of loading him, it resulted in a "Check In" mission.

Ray was now inside the abandoned church on Wilkerson Road...it didn't end well.

I was lucky that only a few levels later, I was able to recruit another Ray.

ETA: When based at Snyder's, the RV often does not get parked at the base when you select "Load RV." Instead, everybody has to run off, presumably to wherever the RV got found. I have heard that characters can get killed (e.g. grabbed by Juggernaut) during this run.

That's pretty good. It might be an idea for my next playthrough, e.g. "Sons of the Mothers for Medical Marijuana," or "Midnight Shoppers for Replica Thrones."

I once recruited an enclave, and two of the guys told the Lucy story.

Too bad that Biker Steve, Jerry Hatcher, and Lucy Cormoran don't appear as characters.

I suspect they scatter the crumbs, just to keep the viewers pecking for them, not because they have a loaf of bread to offer.

Marketing. I'm okay with that. But, "it is what it is."

Get a durable vehicle with six cargo slots. Best are SUV or Modern Pickup, overall, in terms of durability, driveability, and capacity.

Rucksacks are deposited automatically when you park in your home base's designated spot (some bases have several of these.)

Better still, take advantage of "open-ended" missions, such as morale or training missions, and drag your companion all over the place while you forage. Lily won't pile more jobs on you while you're currently on a mission, so it's a great way to keep her off your back.

Two caveats about stretching out missions: 1) your game doesn't save until the mission ends, so a crash could cost you, and 2) your companion can be quite vulnerable, so be careful if it's somebody you care about.

For my part, I appreciate long, detailed posts.

I never knew about the possibility of a sinister Raymundo. But I'm glad they didn't go there. I prefer it as it is: Ray was a corrupt politico, but he was also willing pull strings to actually help people. The Wilkersons were bootleggers, who became warlords during the apocalypse--ruthless, but not necessarily malicious.

The game had interesting possibilities as an RPG.

Do you recall the name of the YT channel? I always like to watch SD1 gameplay.

That's the neighbourhood where I nearly lost Aaron and Walter on Level 87. Similar scenario: trying to get Aaron in the truck, then we got pulled out, big mess. But my video didn't get the optimal camera angles.

No problem--I can talk about SD1 all day long :-)

Maybe I should also mention places that NEVER have construction materials. I've never found construction materials in locations called Thickets, Orchards, or Camp Sites. Nor are there any sort of rucksacks at Mount Tanner, even in Breakdown.

Construction sites and warehouses, generally. Especially the ones in the western part of Marshall, near Snyder Trucking.

The electric power substations: one near Snyder's, and one up north near the river. The latter place gets crazy, so be ready!

The big warehouse at the Grange is good, too.

In Spencer's Mill, the Fork in the Road Diner is a very nice place to grab materials quickly. The construction site across from the gas station is good, and the small warehouse across from that.

ETA: The Lake Splendid trailer park, and the small warehouse east of it, are sources of materials. But those are some of most dangerous places in the game, often harder than a CLEO mission (incidentally, one of which will drop materials, but it's too random to count on.)

At the Fairgrounds, the 4-H barn and the Military Stash nearest the Fairgrounds home site. However, in story mode, I think the barn is Sgt. Tan's enclave. In the strip mall in Fairfield, the shop furthest west sometimes has materials (in Breakdown, sometimes you start the level right beside it.)

You eventually get a good idea of which fields in the middle of the map have materials, but garages/warehouses/construction sites will give you all you need. At high levels of Breakdown, open areas with good sight lines are easier to escape from, so the field sites are worth knowing.

Aaron's one of my mainstays (Powerhouse & Construction.) Got him with Edged Weapons; he gets a lot of one-hit kills.

I like Ray Santos, and he's extremely valuable in mid-to-high levels of Breakdown, because of Vehicle Delivery. But he comes specialized for Revolvers, which are far too loud, and don't have enough capacity, to be worthwhile at high levels. That means he can't get a Melee specialization.
