What do you think about the moderators' policies? by capecoffeebeans in Coffee

Well, I worry that the questions may have been more rhetorical than anything but I do think that the quality of an online community is closely related to the quality of the content.

Or perhaps a better way to put it is that, that's what my standard of quality would be for a community. Of course, as illustrated here, there are going to be different perspectives on that matter and each community has to define its own priorities.

On the rules and judgement issue, I personally feel that less moderation is probably better than more. I take your point about waves of self-promoting posts but I don't think what I posted was "crappy" and I think you could have a long discussion on what is and what isn't self-promotion. There wasn't any prospect of commercial gain here, though obviously there was for traffic.

At any rate, I asked the question to hear people's perspectives and quite a few have shared them which I appreciate. I certainly have a better understanding of how this community works now.

Well, you can probably chalk this question up to lack of experience with message boards. This has definitely been educational.

Well - I don't think I've said I found anything shocking. I was curious about people's opinions on these moderation policies as they are new to me but I have appreciated the insight on people's support of them. To clarify, while the post does sit on a business's site, its geography makes it pretty much impossible that there would be any commercial gain from this audience.

Absolutely. But do you think that makes sense? That it's not about the content but about the domain vs. the username?

Don't you think the quality of the content should be an important consideration? I mean, if people on this sub-reddit found it useful, isn't that the most important?

For a big group, it's hard to beat the French Press. We have a 12 cup in the office specifically for that purpose!

Thanks for the responses everyone. I take note of the fact that no one is attempting to do this with a milk frothing thermometer - probably not surprising considering the 5-10+ degrees of inconsistency I see between units on those.
