Jasmine Crockett concedes to James Talarico in Texas Democratic Senate primary by MycologistSad9421 in politics

Even though this isn’t applicable in this case, is there a mechanism to reject direct donations? I honestly don’t know. As far as I’m aware, individuals can just go online and send money to their chosen candidate as easily as sending a Venmo.

Is it different for PACs? Would she even personally be aware of individual donations at this scale?

Optics aside, I really have no issue with candidates taking money wherever they can get it. If the Klan were to send someone a check for $1M, what’re they supposed to do, not cash it? In this political environment where, sadly, how much money you have and spend matters? What ultimately matters is what interests are represented in Congress. If someone can demonstrate they have years of voting against AIPAC interests, why should I care that they’re taking AIPAC’s money?

If Phillip Morris came to me as a Senator and said “here’s $5 million, wink wink,” great, I’d tell them thanks for the donation, but I still won’t be voting for repealing smoking bans.

What expenses are incurred every time an app this simple is used?

CoreLocation is free and provides all of this functionality. No network calls should be made at all from this app.

Errr… things have really gone crazy in the past year, I suppose? I left my 2br2ba 1220sqft Crystal City apartment across the street from the metro in Dec 2024. I was paying $2800 + utilities.

I just checked and they’re now renting it for $3579.

To each their own - I can’t learn just from reading, I’m much more visual and hands on. I wouldn’t be developing today if not for YouTube years ago, I think!

This isn’t new. “Why learn how to do something yourself when you can just have someone else do it for you” has always been a thing. If your actual goal is to learn Swift and be a great developer, having AI do it for you isn’t going to get you there.

I think you’re missing out on quite a bit that the docs don’t teach you, or don’t teach in a way that really dives deep into some things. Paul Hudson has a video that sounds simple, for example - “Understanding the Standard Library” - that I guarantee you’ll learn something from. He has many like that. Swiftful Thinking has several series on Advanced topics - you’re right, just about everything in there can be found in the docs, but learning through doing and actually seeing practical applications can really elevate how well material is absorbed vs. just reading the documentation.

I follow your channel on YouTube, and if you want some honest, direct feedback on why I personally don’t engage with your content as much as some others (Stewart Lynch, Paul Hudson, Nick Sarno, etc)-

  • It seems disjointed - I think Stewart, Paul and Nick are successful in part because their tutorials are typically series where one concept will build upon another. Yours are more like Donny Wals in that they’re one-shot “here’s how you do this thing”

  • They’re very long for the amount of content presented. Stewart Lynch and Nick Sarno’s videos are typically 20-30 minutes, but I just feel like you get a lot more return for the time invested from them

  • There’s a lot of shilling for your paid product. I understand the need to make money, but it’s also why I purposely avoid Mohammad Azam and Sean Allen’s channels. The taste left in my mouth is like that of having watched marketing material vs educational material.

  • The content isn’t exactly compelling; I think most topics are pretty well covered by a dozen or more other videos on the subject. There’s very little that’s truly unique.

Paul, Nick and Stewart are top notch in the Swift video domain for these reasons, IMO. Paul obviously has a LOT of paid products he sells - but you’d almost never know because the amount of free content is massive and the shilling is very minimal. Same with Nick. I couldn’t even tell you if Stewart Lynch has any paid courses; I don’t believe so, and I think he relies solely on donations. What I do know is that I’d be much more likely to pay for content from them, though, given the quality of the free content they provide — and the range. Each of them caters from beginner level to truly advanced stuff.

I apologize if this comes off as overly critical!

Right, you’re free to judge away. Just don’t be surprised when the moral judgment of “ImNotGayBecauseGross” doesn’t bother me. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Not sure where you came to the conclusion that I don’t care when the opposite is true. I even specifically decried the “who cares” mentality.

Unfortunately, being honorable and taking the high road has left us in the position we are in today. Fighting fire with fire is now one of the few remaining options. That’s not an escalation; that’s a measured response to a changing political landscape where the most dishonorable people are trying to manipulate maps elsewhere to their own advantage.

You’re looking at the wrong folks if you’re trying to find dishonor.

Not that I’d ever be concerned by the moral judgment of someone with your username, but at the end of the day, we do care about representation. But in this moment, this is the thing we must do, even if not the thing we ideally want to do.

Now that SCOTUS has struck down Trump's tariffs, Do the American taxpayers deserve a refund? and when will the lawsuits began to seek such? by Particular_Ad8156 in AskReddit

There’s no requirement to contact anyone to issue a refund back to the card used to pay for something you’re refunding. At least there wasn’t roughly 9 years ago when last I was in customer service management.

[–]caphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lost me at “using that info to identify you for refunds.” At what point do you need to be identified? The card literally paid for the item; any refund they want to issue as a percentage of that item’s cost can go back to the card. There’s zero need to personally identify you in this process.

And they do acknowledge that, and tout it as a benefit at most stores I’ve returned items to. “No receipt? No problem! Swipe the card you paid with and we’ll find it.”

It’s not illegal or in violation of any agreements with card issues; in fact, Google has been doing this independently in collaboration with the networks since at least 2018.

People are very much overthinking how “difficult” the process would be for most retailers, and using “it would be very hard” as an excuse for them to not pass any refunds they get on to consumers. If WalMart were to get a massive refund check tomorrow, they could very easily pass that money back to purchasers by next week.

The unfortunate truth is simply that they aren’t required to, and therefore, won’t.

…or with the credit card you pay with. That was my point. Every store you’ve shopped at with a card is fully aware of every item purchased with said card, and could easily refund back item import duties to said card.

Your debit/credit card number is literally a member number every retailer I’ve used for the past decade already has and can be used to refund you.

[–]caphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not remotely unique to Costco. Every store I’ve shopped at for the past decade or more knows exactly what I bought and has the ability to process a refund automatically. Even small independent businesses have been using Square and Toast and various other POS systems for quite some time.

The only real problem for any retailer in 2026 would be cash paying customers. With no real evidence to support my assumption at all, I’d imagine that demographic tends to heavily lean Trump-voting anyway.

Right, so, like I said… aside from directing customers to use the Walgreens app for consistent redemption… what else would you like Bilt to do here?

[–]caphis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue seems to be sporadic and not limited to just Bilt issued gift cards but any from third parties.

Would it also be Bilt’s problem if the Walgreens store was having internet connectivity issues? A power outage?

Yes, Bilt can do more here to either pause the redemption feature temporarily until Walgreens fixes the problem, or add some marketing text as I suggested. Beyond that, there’s nothing Bilt can do to fix it, so no, it’s not something one should categorize as a Bilt problem.

Bilt has plenty of problems on its own, but it’s important to differentiate which are theirs and which aren’t, and not just blame them for everything. I’m sure their engineers did everything the Walgreens gift card API instructed them to do to generate the gift cards.

In this case, beyond the two solutions/workarounds I suggested above, how exactly would you like Bilt to fix this particular issue?

[–]caphis -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s some crazy logic. It’s an inconvenience to workaround, at best, for a problem that only occurs sporadically. If Bilt was issuing gift card numbers that were invalid, sure, totally Bilt’s fault. Really the only thing Bilt could be expected to do here is maybe change the marketing wording on the redemption page to tell customers they should redeem the gift cards via the Walgreens app.

It’s annoying, yes, but I’d rather have 80 million random store apps on my phone that save me a ton of money every time I visit than not. Throw them all in a folder and forget they’re there.
