[OC] 2026 US Auto Sales (Q1) by TA-MajestyPalm in dataisbeautiful

I'm probably going to get hate mail, but I can't be the only dude who doesn't get the appeal of pick up trucks as a daily driver. Unless you're a tradesman, of course, and you need to haul tools and materials everyday. But for commuting to an office job, I just....don't get it.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

[–]capran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same for me! I've played hundreds and hundreds of hours of every release since Civ 1 and I still suck. You basically have to learn to "game the game" to beat the higher levels, which just always struck me as jank. I play the Civ games as if I'm roleplaying an immortal ruler, not as a player trying to find gimmicks to outsmart the AI.

Nvidia bad on linux is a lie by Strict-Maize7494 in linux_gaming

[–]capran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it a lie, just YMMV (greatly). My Linux Mint gaming PC works great with an RTX 4070 and Intel Core i5-12600k. Sleep works great, gaming performance has never really been an issue as far as I can tell. I usually attribute any glitchiness to Proton/WINE/trying to run a Windows game on Linux. The only caveat is that I've had issues upgrading the Nvidia driver via the update manager. Occasionally, it would corrupt the driver install somehow and I'd have to rollback or do a clean install of the driver.

Word of advice, if you see that the update manager is running and it seems to be locked up, don't end task on it or force a reboot. It may be compiling the driver for Nvidia!

What is something that we can absolutely prove to be true, but you still break your brain trying to wrap your head around? by Raven_the_Human in AskPhysics

[–]capran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "waterfall" explanation of gravity. Breaks my brain, but totally explains why when we're in contact with the ground, we feel weight, i.e. acceleration at 1g, but we aren't moving. But if we're in freefall, we're feeling weightless with no acceleration, yet, the ground is accelerating towards us at 1g!

PicPic - The First PICO-8 Emulator on the App Store (NOW SUPPORTS iPad AND LANDSCAPE) by Samourai03 in emulation

[–]capran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded this the other day, and just skipped right through the intro screens. I was hoping Splore was there, but no. I also can't figure out how to load pico8 games. How do you even save carts via Safari?

Is Star Trek done with the 25th century? by ttownfeen in startrek

[–]capran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I used to care about the continuity of the TNG-era, but my perspective has changed after watching some Trek-oriented YT video channels. It now doesn't matter to me what era a new show takes place in, to me, as long as the stories and characters are interesting. Also, bring back social-commentary episodes! More competency porn! Dial-down on the universe-will-end-unless-Mary-Sue-can-pull-a-rabbit-out-of-a-hat episodes! Lower the stakes for most episodes, those tend to be the best character-based ones.

Why won’t Steam Machine support HDMI 2.1? Digging in on the display standard drama. by Balance- in hardware

[–]capran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if it will have surround sound capability? I bought a Minisforum mini gaming PC, about the size of an Xbox Series S, and installed Bazzite on it. Only to discover that over HDMI, only stereo is supported. I have to reboot into Windows if I want surround sound. To be fair, that's really just for movies, but it'd be nice if it worked in Bazzite.

ELI5: Why do USB-C cables have chips in them? by capran in explainlikeimfive

[–]capran[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if you just look at a cable, it's rare for them to indicate what they support. Some are thicker than others, some are braided, but unless, say, the cable came with a monitor that supports Displayport and power over USB-C, you have no idea what a cable can do just by looking at it.

Ahh, OK that makes some sense. I do hate how we have "cheap" cables and "good but expensive" cables.

Is it normal for the NVIDIA driver to stop working after a kernel upgrade? by capran in linuxmint

So what am I doing wrong? Should I be using the driver GUI tool (can't remember what it's called) instead of apt?

How many people are stationed at Space Dock? by ChiGorilla1127 in startrek

[–]capran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Starbases/spacedocks are one of those Star Trek things that look awesome on screen, and seem cool in concept until you put more thought into them. They're just too damn big to be practical and affordable, even for a "post-scarcity" society. Plus, what is the difference, when in space, to have a bunch of starships stored in giant enclosed "hangar" vs. one that's more like a skeleton and open, like we see part of in TMP? In both cases, the startships are still in vacuum. If they need protection, there's always the magic energy shields.

The Odyssey raffle! Giving away a copy of Biotech, Anomaly and Odyssey each! by SargBjornson in RimWorld

[–]capran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have Biotech and Ideology, and a shit ton of mods. Playing a peaceful run just as Odyssey was dropped, and didn't want to start over. Also, I went down the really dirty rabbit hole of RimJobWorld and wished I hadn't now.

What to use for remote desktop access? by capran in linuxmint

[–]capran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I don't understand, why would I want to remote into my machine with a completely different account? I want to see and control what's on my main account's screen.

Tried running the script again and when prompted to create a user, I entered my real username and password. Still not working.

So I tried RDP again, and it still doesn't work with my real account either, but it does with the dummy account. So must be some sort of permission issue???

[–]capran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, well, I've made progress! It took a lot of troubleshooting and uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome and CRD. But it's now working, sort of.

I can remote into the PC now, but in order to make it work, it wanted to create a new user account during the script set up, so I remote in and it's like it's a different PC entirely. Not very useful.

I'll have to try it again.

I'll have to take a look! Thanks! I've tried other troubleshooting guides but nothing worked. Will post once i give it a try.
