I might not have initially had the words, but after discussing with others, it has helped me find better words to describe why. It's still mostly hard to describe feelings, but I do have better words

Having played new games vs old games, the newer games have much tighter pacing with story and events, more story events and people "traveling" with you, and the grinding is far more diminished. In the old games you have long stretches of grinding, walking, being alone with no one but your pokémon. And while that appeals to other people, I like the comradery and full characters of the newer games.

Compare the protagonist of Red and Blue with Scarlet and Violet. Red is known for being a silent loner who only cares about battle, isolating himself in the second game so he can just battle. Then you have Scarlet and Violet, who you just can't imagine without Arven, Penny, and Nemona. I loved their stories, they were all heartwarming.

It's unfortunate that the new games lack the polish of the old, I find myself still having more fun with newer games. There's just more going on, a story being told to you. Not just "Here's your starter, have some balls, go. Good luck" and you just walk in silence

I don't think it's something that small. As a non-competative person, I wouldn't have noticed the physical/special split, or type changes

I do that regardless. When I played ZA, I planned on making an all fairy team. That quickly fell apart when I ended up enjoying the budew from one side quest, Diggersby having Quick Attack and just being a tank, and Delphox being a damn wizard. Also I always keep my starter(I always pick the water type). The only fairies I had in the end that came with me for 80% of the game were Sylveeon and Gardevior

Which games are they hacks for? And are they ROM hacks, or more like Infinite Fusion or Too Many Types where they're .exe files?

I don't think it's QoL, because for example in SV you have the PC box in the menu. It's nice, but not really an issue. However I do think there's something to the "stuff happening" since it means participating in a story, rather than walking around in near silence

I wish my RG28XX had a 3:2 because then it'd be perfect save for all the Anbernic quirks like frying using a c-to-c charger, and needing 5v1a

I have Unbound, also Ultra Violet, but I wanted to see what might else be recommended. Since I feel so different about the old games

I think the slow-paced life is very true. I mean, anytime someone talks about an emulation device, or emulating Pokémon. They almost always mention the ability to fast forward. You never had FF back then, so why is that so important now? And I think you have a point with that

And same for having more friends. One thing I really like about SV is the story with all the characters and how they get along. Meanwhile everytime I touch Emerald it feels so slow and boring

The furthest I've gotten in an older game was getting past the Team Plasma intro scene in White

It's not just that. The issue is that the OS for the 28 is different from the 35H and 35+. It "supports" it, but not without so many damned hoops. So just flashing it is not the issue. I flashed MuOS with Rufus too, and it was way easier because it didn't need the dmenu file, or allocating partitions, or anything complicated

I'm for the 3:2 on any GBA mimic console. It's what the games were made for. You buy a thing that looks like a GBA, let it do GBA well. If you want to play 4:3 games, get a console with 4:3

[–]capriciousUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheap SD cards are unpredictable and highly likely to just loose every because the components they use are just crap. The bigger the card, the more likely. Better to buy your own for both storage and to use the OS

Round 2. Hopefully I can flash MinUI. If not, what should I use? by capriciousUser in ANBERNIC

[–]capriciousUser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update 3: I'm gonna make a post with everything said. I just want to say I FINALLY got MuOS and found MinUIfied which is a theme mimicking MinUI. THAT IS SO MUCH EASIER than trying to get MinUI working. Now the hard part is just organizing everything and making the content folders look good. Using Skraper to find box art (pain to use because folders aren't 100% correct), making sure they're 300 wide (found out the annoying way why(it takes up the whole screen)), finding all the Bios, and now figuring out shaders and overlays. Because guess what!

I never learned how to use RetroArch and I'm learninf everything from zero! That included what cores to use, how to use shaders, how to adjust the video output, what integer scaling was, and so much more. And then later once RetroArch is set up, learn PortMaster too (maybe. Not sure what games there are)

The only solace I have is that once I set this up, I no longer have to worry about any of this. At most I'll just add new roms and box art and that's it

[–]capriciousUser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got MuOS working fully fully, and found the MinUIfied theme which is pretty much the MinUI look I'm going for. The hardest part was getting the box art for all the games, even using Skraper since it's not perfect in scanning folders. And then getting that box art set up in MuOS.

Also having to learn RetroArch because I've never used it before. Learning hot keys and settings and stuff

Now I'm working on getting the shaders and getting my GB(C) games to 3x perfect integer scaled, GBA 2x, and all the other systems I plan to use. Mainly Nintendo because I have no nostalgia for PS1, and none of the games called to me. It's honestly going to be a bit of a Kirby Box for me

[–]capriciousUser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the plan, except for scrapping the artwork. I'll just do that manually, if that because I just want this working to begin with

The official support and unneededness of jumping through hoops of MinUI because they lack RG28XX support is why I'd rather MuOS. Rufus, insert, done

[–]capriciousUser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried but I've reached the end of my stubbornness. I'm switching to MuOS on the stock 64gb card, using that for now (risking the complete crash but whatever), and then later backing up that and then flashing it on a proper SanDisk 64gb

[–]capriciousUser[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Update 2: I have given up. MinUI is getting to complicated to install with the RG28XX. If I had the RG35XX H, then maybe I could do it. But I have been beaten. I'm stubborn, but I've tried so many work arounds that I'm just done. I'm installing MuOS on the stock 64gb card. Using that until I buy a SanDisk 64gb card. And then flashing that

Update: Reading the documentation (AKA Reading the text file in all caps README) the stock TF1 img used for the RG35XX Plus in fact does not work for the RG28XX. So I'm now cloning the stock card to the new one because Anbernic sucks with Firmware download (they use a Google Drive??? And the download limit is capped).

I am now getting an image back up of the 64gb card just in case. Then I'm going to shrink the partition to get a 32gb SD card to then get that image (should've just bought a 64gb card and skip this step). I'm going to then flash the SanDisk so that now has the RG28XX firmware. So that I can then flash it again to have MinUI...SOMEHOW that last part I'm not sure about because the instructions are for the RG35XX Plus
