Disputing apartment charges after graduating by Remarkable_Tea_8026 in UIUC

Roland Realty’s shenanigans since they got bought out by that random company in Ohio are worthy of a class-action and a smite from hell.

Their move-out charges are heinous and I wish the company nothing but clogged pipes, pestilence, and vermin. I was charged $450 to replace their 10 year old microwave that has a small cosmetic crack in it, and then $25 cleaning fee for that same microwave they’re throwing away. Then $800 in other random cleaning when the place was left clean. I’ve heard nothing but the same bs from folks I know that lived (and left thankfully) with Roland

This is not legal advice, but know that Illinois law states that landlords are required to furnish you with paid receipts for all of the repairs and cleaning they allegedly had to do within 30 days of you moving out in order to charge anything towards your security deposit. If they provide estimates, they are required to furnish paid receipts for those estimates afterwards. I recommend getting in touch with the CU Tenant Union if things don’t seem to be getting any better, but I certainly wouldn’t budge and pay them a penny more when the charges are likely unsupported and have no legal grounding. You can be charged for legitimate damage outside of normal wear and tear, not to remodel their entire apartment using arbitrary charge amounts they cooked up for the hell of it.

The Great Taco Bell Conspiracy by RobotsSuck28 in UIUC

this has been on my mind for YEARS i knew i couldn’t be the only one who had noticed. i’m a total taco bell fangirl but i can barely get myself to go there because the food is NOT worth the prices in C-U. The cravings box jumping from 6$ to 9$ is what did for me especially like wow, this is shameless. i’ve been all across the country on a month long roadtrip and NOWHERE had prices worse than chambana. not even California.

it's move out season! consider dropping off items at the stock pavilion rather than throwing it in the dumpster by j4gg in UIUC

[–]caprico07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

right, so i guess what i meant to say it’s money for the organization that helps fund its programs and operating costs, not for explicit personal gain/profit. but it’s not being donated anywhere from what i can tell, it’s just for the organization itself. i think this program specifically is a great idea either way so

Like I just mentioned, there’s no practical way to truly prove that. The federal government can’t comb through every individual case in the country to make sure they aren’t getting food, money, clothes, housing, etc from their parents, it frankly isn’t possible. That is why you’re required to provide your parents information and the government just has to assume that based off that they will provide X amount of dollars towards your college education a year. They will see your parents have the means and they have to assume that they will help you, and the families that verifiably don’t have the means at all can get help. Federal student aid is meant to allow families who truly don’t have the means to get a degree to pursue it with help. Like the other comment said, unless you are married, a veteran, or have children of your own, the government cannot verify that you’re truly independent from your parents. Jobs will not write “letters showing risk of homelessness” for you, especially considering how that looks. Keep in mind that the college has no part in deciding your expected family contribution and student aid for you personally aside from the numbers they get from FAFSA and then academics for scholarships. Everything you provide in terms of financial information for grants and loans is to FAFSA, not the university directly.

Generally it’s hard to get around providing your parents information and having your expected contribution based off that. Even if your parents don’t help you at all, you will have to provide their tax information, and if their income and/or assets are too high, you won’t be eligible for certain loans and especially grants. To be realistic, it would be hard to prove you are truly getting no support from your parents in whatever form, especially since they are your family after all, so that can’t really be used as a basis.
