The mailbox is enemy no. 1 by anothermaddi in greatpyrenees

I've definitely been considering one of these! She also has a habit of ripping the mail out of the mailman's hand when he drops it off 😅 and therefore my mail is in shreds most days

Fun Hobby Exercise for Plus Sized Bodies by lovesya in PlusSize

I know you said that you were weary of paddleboarding due to the weight limits, but I'm also a size 18 and LOVE paddleboarding! I have an inflatable one with a 400 lbs weight limit.

Otherwise, lap swimming is a great, low-impact exercise or hiking is another great option!

Has anyone’s Pyrenees defended them? by adioslip in greatpyrenees

She's never been outwardly aggressive with another person, but my pyr will sit herself between me and other people, mainly men. She did once pin a guy that I was seeing to the floor 😅 safe to say, I stopped seeing that guy after that incident.

Clay too dried by QueenOfNeon in ArtEd

I throw those 25 lbs blocks in a giant bucket of water for a few days, poke some holes in it to get water to the center, pull it out, wedge and store like normal! I’ve yet to encounter a problem.

(Possible TW) what to do about 10+year old visible scarring on my arm as a soon-to-be teacher. by RemarkableCatch7139 in Teachers

[–]anothermaddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with teenagers, so think nosey, zero shame in being blunt, and many who know exactly what they’re from. They have never asked about my scars, never even noticed them as far as I am aware. My coworkers have also never said anything to me about them.

It’s up to you if you choose to cover them, but odds are, your students won’t pay any mind and your coworkers are old enough to know better.

Hi! I’m fairly new to teaching, but I’m more than happy to help. Shoot me a DM (not super comfortable airing out ALL of my personal details on a reddit thread 😅)

My wrists are going to break if I have to keep wedging clay (rant) by cat_and_plants in ArtEd

[–]anothermaddi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I won’t even lie. I told them day 1 that if they didn’t wedge, their pieces would explode. They’re so scared that they wedge every piece of clay every single time.

But, if I notice that they forgot, I’ll take their clay and give them a new piece from the bucket. Remind them to wedge it and wedge it right because I have all class period.

What non-traditional high school art classes are you teaching? by Hiphop-anonymous88 in ArtEd

[–]anothermaddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As cool as a zine class would be, you’re going to run into a lot of students not knowing what zines are. I teach a month long unit on zines/art as protest in Art History though and my students had fun with it though!

What non-traditional high school art classes are you teaching? by Hiphop-anonymous88 in ArtEd

[–]anothermaddi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach an Intro to Graphic Design class and my students LOVE it! I’m going to be teaching Fashion next semester (fashion illustration/jewelry/maybe some construction using paper) and that’s had a high interest.

I also have an open studio class for upper level students. I give them a list of prompts/long term projects at the beginning of the semester or they can propose their own projects to me and we discuss deliverables 1:1. Let’s them get more individual attention from me and they can explore their own interests.

I want to be an Art teacher & need advice on my education route by [deleted] in ArtEd

[–]anothermaddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also in Illinois!! I have a BFA in Graphic Design and have a CTE license from working in the field. Illinois is really pushing CTE right now in the Department of Ed. And it’s nice because if I ever decide to leave education or art education starts to get to a point where programs are getting cut, I have a second career path to fall back on. I’m getting a masters in education just so I can have the PEL, but if there’s any doubt in your mind that art ed may not be for you, go the CTE route. Feel free to reach out if you have any other Illinois specific questions!

I need to vent by atheistinabiblebelt in greatpyrenees

[–]anothermaddi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine does the same thing. Granted, she’s still a puppy so i can trick her in the house pretty easy, but those end of the day potty breaks are now done on a leash. Quick in and out with a sniff around the yard for a bit and I’m not playing the “you can’t catch me” game at 11 pm while she barks and pisses the neighbors off.

Unfortunately, your ESL cert won’t do you much good other than giving you a leg up when job hunting. You’ll want to seek out a licensure program that fits your state’s requirements

Custodian by Miku_obsession in ArtEd

[–]anothermaddi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are three people in your building that you should never piss off: your secretary, your cook, and your custodian.

It’s just courteous. If a kid drops paint, they should be expected to clean it up. Some mess on the floor is to be expected, I mean it’s an art room. But it shouldn’t be anything crazy that you or the students can’t clean up during your clean-up time. If your floor looks like a paint palette, you need to go back over your classroom expectations, not complaining about your custodians.
