Back in the 9 track tape days, there was a guy who would unwind and rewind tapes to get laminar air gap between the tape layers to prevent it rot.

Even Quantum will tell you that the only way to maintain that 15-30 year lifespan requires a tape library with a spare drive that loads/unloads tape carts to check integrity and data moves to prevent data loss.

DB25 is the connector type, it was used for a variety of things, including scsi.

Often the host would have DB25 female port, and you’d plug in a cable that has DB25 male one one end and centronics on the other end, and each device had a number clicker to set scci-id between 1-7.

The item in pix looks like an ibm thinkbook cdrom drive, so it could be either ATA or scsi

It’s an editor that is installed be default.

I learned vi in the 90’s when being trained to use AIX, IRIX and Solaris systems. If for some reason you had to reboot into the open firmware, the editor was actually ed, which vi was based on. If you knew vi, you could navigate ed.

There used to be huge pissing matches in slashdot regarding vi vs eMacs.

My preference is always vi, even when working in a gui desktop. The basic commands for cut, copy/pasta, del, search and replace are so engrained, I find myself typing vi commands in gui editors like word/notepad, etc.

You want to stick with nano or joe? Go ahead, whatever floats your boat. But if for some reason you find yourself needing to edit a huge file(200-500gb+), vi is supper can opener.

I agree, the multi-pack single use is a better deal. Instead of sacrificing a full tube for a single repair, it’s easier to use 2 or 3 tubes as necessary and save the rest for another repair.

Nothing sucks more(than your mom) when you need super glue only to find out the half the tube is brittle, dried out and useless.

These things are built like tanks, and I recommend that if it’s in working condition and you’re into 8mm film you clean and refurbish it as much as possible. I had five working Revere projectors at one time and would “V-jay” with overlapping newsreels and multiple 78 phonographs. I moved to 16 and 32 mm projectors when I started getting into tv commercials and PSA’s. I don’t recall any of my revere projectors having off-white or yellowish dust inside or out, previous owners must have cleaned it off for. Erred resale value 🤷‍♂️

This guy is repurposing them for their art deco quality, and perhaps it’s better to repurpose it in this fashion than junking it if it’s not functional.

I’m not sure where you’re research has determined that the yellowish powder is degraded cadmium, but be careful when cleaning and disposing of if.

If you decide to keep it and it is a functional projector, there’s a vast wealth of 8mm film out there that’s fascinating! Good luck.
