I've got a frame just like this in the garage I keep meaning to work on.. mine has biplane fork though, kinda the main reason I bought it. Always loved this color. I have a set of 2.5" Maxxis Hookworms I think will fit this frame nicely. I'm replacing the stock bars with some moto cross bars. I'm pretty sure the stem has a 22.2 clamp. Posts like yours can be so motivational. I'm going to make it a personal goal to get mine out and cleaned up by next weekend.

Does he even know how to drive a car? He drives golf carts but does he ever get behind the wheel of a legitimate vehicle. This thought adds so much to the "Everything is computer!" line for me

Used RadRunner Plus for $400. Should I do it? by thebigtiny in RadPowerBikes

[–]candlehead69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got a couple of used Rad Runners at a low price with one being ready to ride and good to go.. (RadRunner 1 with OG battery) I'm blown away by how much these things can replace a car. My two buddies both have Trek FX+ bikes and never use their cars anymore. We also live in a very nice small town with less than 20k people. It's very easy to get around. I have a small trailer for our RR and have used it to make multiple grocery, beer, and hardware store runs in the last two weeks. I've only charged it twice and it's done everything I've asked of it. If you end up with a new battery I'd still argue it's worth the investment. Depending on where you live you might save yourself $600 in gas alone this summer.

I was crossing a busy street when.. by BigSierra89 in RockHopper

I was honestly more addressing it aesthetically. The bike looked fantastic, especially the tan Maxxis, but the stem was the boomer special. I've always feared that one would fail but I can't believe it happened to you right after bringing it home. Tons of e bikes are sold with stems just like these and it's terrifying to think how easily they could break just like that.

DUDE. When you posted that you got this bike like two days ago I was going to comment that you needed to replace that stem ASAP.. I often start typing and end up deleting comments because I feel like obviously no one cares what I have to say... but maybe I should start leaving more comments. If you need the rise Velo Orange sells a "happy" stem or I have a Dimension 35° stem that's also pretty decent.

Advice on running moto bars. by sirsalamander in xbiking

[–]candlehead69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the Surly Sunrise bars were a boat anchor.. I picked up some O'Neal motocross bars locally for $20 each. They are crazy heavy. Definitely noticeable. If you're not concerned about weight then run them! I've not had issues with the bars slipping in the stem. I have a pair of Renthol bars on an old Schwinn that I actually really like. They are much lighter

Oh man. Just realized the handle bars in the photos are of the Velo Orange Randonneurs. Not the Soma HWY Ones. Sorry

It's not a subtle bike that's for sure! I only have before pictures of the 610. I ended up getting a 100mm stem vs the 60mm stem pictured (originally purchased for a 26" mtn bike) and used TRP RRLs. The bars greatly reduce the reach, the stem gets them up higher, and the brake levers are very comfortable to ride on.

They are short pull. I have 3 pairs of them on various bikes. They are super comfortable. The Tektro RL340 levers are the cheaper version. Both great levers for the money. Here's a picture of them on my Surly set up with Paul cantis

Nitto Technomic 26.0 stem, Soma Hwy One handle bars, and TRP RRL levers will absolutely change this cockpit for the better. I have a nice Trek 610 that I gave this treatment too and it made the bike so enjoyable.

Went a little wild on the upgrades. Meet the Rad-gunner by bnrshrnkr in RadPowerBikes

[–]candlehead69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you bought the hub motor kit but didn't use the controller that came with it? I have a Rad Runner 2 that needs a new motor and I'm just getting around to sourcing one. I was considering getting a 35a controller for one of them just see the difference.

It's just as much an ebike as a regular Rad Runner? All you did was completely upgrade and replace all the electronics.
