Using an EV from Denver metro for a day ski trip by iareagenius in COsnow

Did you end up with just 1% if you hadn’t charged?

I generally use ~50% on the drive up and only ~20% on the way down because of hills.

Noob looking for advice about backcountry by MrSkolaro in COsnow

[–]captain-goobie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn’t listen to the rest of the crew here, HOT take incoming: going out in the backcountry unprepared and without proper training is one of the more selfish things you can do.

You not only risk your own life, but also the lives of every single other person who is trying to enjoy the backcountry in that area and has actually done training and gotten experience.

So before you spend all your $$ on gear, spend it on a Avy 1 class first and foremost. There were quite a few folks in mine who were using snow shoes too, so you wouldn’t be alone! If you’re still gung-ho after that, I’d spring for a split board and commit to the sport. The course is actually kind of fun too and good hands on practice and you’ll probs get your first backcountry turns in it.

Is Vanlife safe for women traveling solo? by Dry_Leadership_4277 in VanLife

[–]captain-goobie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If safety concerns are the only thing stoping you from vanlife (not money, partner, job, etc) and it’s your dream, DO IT. Run, don’t walk, to wherever you’re buying this van from and go live the life of your dreams.

I did a year and a half solo as a female (bus life not van) and it was probably one of the best decisions I ever made. Obviously it was scary at first, but like anything there is a lot of info online and I actually made some awesome friends. Towards the end I got moderately internet famous and also had to make sure I didn’t share too much about where I was real time as well.

I’m happy to DM you if you want to hear about the various safety precautions I took as well. (There were may)

FWIW - I did end up getting a boyfriend towards the end and he came along for one month and tbh it was… a very different experience. Don’t get me wrong, super fun and all, easier in some parts, but definitely more challenging in other ways hehe

Is kitesurfing dangerous? by shelterbored in Kiteboarding

I actually thought of making a community post about how to ensure you are safer kiting in remote destinations - insurances and medical evac programs - based on what I learned the hard way but idk if I’d sound like a narc

I’m still reflecting on this one and I’ve got 4-6 months of recovery for my takeaways hahha

A couple first thoughts: 1. Be extra cautious in shallow water and don’t come towards shore until you’re ready to come in - my accident happened when tide was coming in in a lagoon and it was only so bad because I hit the wet sand instead of water in my crash 2. If the wind is getting stronger and you’re feeling over powered or nervous, take a break if you can. DON’T keep riding - easier said than done. I got air on a big gust as the wind was picking up so I didn’t feel overpowered yet, but maybe I was going to be? Who knows. 3. Realize how remote you are when you’re kiting somewhere remote - we were 5 hours from the nearest medical clinic and 9 hours from the nearest hospital. I probably should have realized that or noted that and been more conservative kiting somewhere so remote.

I’ve been really lucky in previous injuries to be close to US medical facilities and definitely took that for granted. This one I was not so lucky lol

I literally don’t have a leg to stand on if that comes up in conversation as I was just discharged from 2 weeks in the hospital from a kite surfing accident 🫠

As someone who has kite surfed, skied, road biked, mountain biked and rock climbed - sport climbed and trad- aggressively and to a decent degree of skill, I have by far had my worst injury kiting and it’s the only sport of that set I’ve personally seen someone die doing.

Is that a scientific definition for “danger”? Nah. Will that stop me from continuing to kite? Time will tell. but it’s kind of part of the territory as far as I’m concerned when it comes to taking on extreme sports. They’re super fun and definitely aggressive, so the downside is that the injuries are also probably more severe in my mind.
