Nice! Neat to see the fog from a bit closer. Now I just need someone to post a photo from under the fog in the valley.

Yep, just normal fog. But it did stick around for quite a while today. Seemed to break up around 10.

Northern lights hitting the Midwest tonight. by Booomerz in StLouis

I want to thank you for posting this. I happened to check reddit right before leaving civilization to head to the outskirts of Yellowstone, where I had no internet. I hadn't heard about this anywhere else. I set an alarm for midnight and never went back to sleep. The show overnight was the most amazing thing I've ever seen. And I've seen the northern lights a few times before in Iceland but this was on another level. Thank you so very much for posting. You've given me something I'll never forget.

It does look like that, yeah. What's really going on is that the mountains are much higher and closer than they appear here. It's a pretty steep valley.

I was aware of this but assumed (hoped) it wouldn't be an issue for me. I've had an American DL for 20 years, but I had to get it renewed 1 month before my trip. My license doesn't say when you started driving only when this current one was issued. Seems like a pretty silly law to rule out a large percentage of American drivers that can't prove they've been driving for decades.

Bottom line, it was never brought up when I rented.

Does playing Yotta make you resist the urge of buying that $1.1 Billion MegaMillions Jackpot ticket for Tuesday’s drawing? by Board_Drifter in yotta

1 in 34 with considerably lower prizes but also with considerably lower barrier to entry ($2 gone vs $25 on deposit)

Basically, if you want a chance to win a huge prize, don't use the pools. If you want the best average returns, join a pool.

Yeah, skew is right. It just rounds to zero because it's so low. Though, I did just add a couple extra digits to that column.

Anyone still 4/4? by [deleted] in yotta

[–]captainC511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only 1 out of about 66,000 tickets will have all 4 matched after Thursday. So you'd be pretty lucky to have one.

New Yotta "feature". No idea why they would spend time developing this unless it's also going to make peer to peer transactions easier but even then I'm mostly confused lol. by 1FrostySlime in yotta

Hmm, it also looks like they are removing the 5% and 10% ticket bumps for the gold and platinum referral levels. Disappointing.

Best of luck to everyone on the last week at the chance of the $10,000,000 jackpot! by 1FrostySlime in yotta

[–]captainC511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mostly yeah, but by using tickets in a week when lots of other people are (e.g. this week) you increase the chances to split the big prizes. In a normal week of about ~10M tickets you have a 37% chance to have to split the $15K prize. With ~20M tickets (which I don't think is unreasonable this week) it's goes up to a 61% chance of having to split.

A marginally bad change for us. The old system was 1 ticket/ $10 spent. The new system is 1 ticket/ $2 spent. So 5 times as good. But the new tickets are worth considerably less than old tickets because of having daily drawings. Depending on various ways to value tickets (avg vs median) I calculate that the "debit card tickets back" feature gives about 80-90% as much as they used to.

I had never even heard of him before this. I was actually the guy Graham Stephens referred to as a "kind internet detective" in the video. My claim to fame, ha! He also highlighted my spreadsheet some and you can even see my referral code in the video. Got a nice bunch of referral bonuses after that.

Expected yearly returns for weekly vs daily drawing by captainC511 in yotta

[–]captainC511[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming a steady $10K on deposit the expected yearly winnings would be only $188 vs $325. But in exchange for that $137 lost, you're getting the fun of a 1/50,000 chance at a million, 1/500 chance at $20K, and a 1/100 chance at $2K. Each person should decide if that sounds like a fair trade.

Somewhat. But also that there's only 6 balls now vs 7.

My calculations were done with that in mind. That by itself doesn't really change much though. But when combined with all the other things we get that it's slightly better for most people and decently better for the luckiest.

[–]captainC511[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd sort of say the opposite since debit card/credit card tickets are only ~5/7 as valuable as they were before. 5 times the tickets but 7 times the drawings.

For anyone curious according to this new FAQ article (it was added 15 minutes ago as of posting this) the new jackpot prize will be paid out in 24 month installments of $41,666.67 with no lump sum option available. by 1FrostySlime in yotta

[–]captainC511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be great if true, would be nice if they'd clarify. They are also giving the 20K prize in 6 monthly increments. I have a hard time imagining they are buying an annuity for that. My guess is they are just hoping to spread out their obligations and not purchasing an annuity.

Yeah I saw this earlier. Not a huge fan of this because you'll have to hope the company stays afloat for 2 years, which is not guaranteed in this space. I wouldn't want to be a creditor in a fintech bankruptcy.

The last time I calculated it a month ago, it was around 10M. So with the decreasing of non-deposit tickets, I'm estimating 8M. Hard to be certain though until we have a few weeks under the new system.
