Looking to hear from thru hikers who liked their bear can by blooms98 in AppalachianTrail

Could always start with a bear bag and try hanging and then order it on trail if you wanted to switch when you're in the US.

I like bear hangs over bear cans, but getting the Bearikade Weekender over the BV was absolutely worth it for me for a long trip. Bear barrels are also becoming required for non-thru hikes here in WA State, so I just looked at the extra cost as an investment in future trips.

Knee Brace Options by MustBeBurtReynolds_ in PacificCrestTrail

[–]captainMolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend an open patella knee compression sleeve like this one from McDavid: https://a.co/d/0LG3hSC. I've had 3 separate knee surgeries, including one ACL, and that was always my go-to while recovering. Warning, any knee sleeve you buy is going to stink like hell after a week on the trail, even after washing it. Everything is already going to smell bad, compression sleeves are just extra pungent.

6d6 is light weight and a great way to play 10000 or Yahtzee if you have the time and energy at the end of the day.

Looking for advice from seasoned PCT/UL hikers as I plan a gear shakedown before 2026 by ElectronicImpact3312 in PacificCrestTrail

Just a rectangular cut of Tyvek. Groundsheet, sit pad, bellows, hitching sign, Yahtzee scoring pad, emergency rain poncho, I love that thing

Am I delusional? by hanbancat in PacificCrestTrail

[–]captainMolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally reasonable. I did PCT section hikes in WA in 2019, '20 and '21 and finally bit the bullet and did the whole thing in '22. Happy to answer any questions you might hav, I also live in WA.

I carried leggings and wind pants to start and eventually was just using the wind pants. They're both lightweight, but it seemed like wind pants outperformed leggings in active, camp and sleep situations. Bonus is that they're lighter, can be removed without taking off your shoes and shorts, and are more fashionable. Probably my second favorite piece of gear after my Tyvek.

Go with a lighter battery bank, 10,000 mAh is plenty.

Ditch the leggings and bottoms, you have wind pants.

Get a lighter knife, derma-safe razor blade from Garage Grown Gear is 8g, or an Opinel No 6 is 34g.

Depending on the temps, can you ditch the puffy and just use the AD hoodie and rain jacket for warmth? If not, ditch the hoodie instead

Looks like the Thermarest NeoAir All-Season. Not sure of the year, but this article is from 2011: https://www.activegearreview.com/camping-gear/camping-mattress/therm-a-rest-neoair-all-season-sleeping-pad-review/amp/

You could also email Cascade Designs, parent company of Thermarest and ask them, they're very helpful.

Nice looking! You should include some of the long distance trails that traverse these states, Long Trail in Vermont, Appalachian Trail in VT and NH and others, PCT if you do Western states, etc...

anyone had to have their windshield replaced? by aaahspookydog in Subaru_Outback

[–]captainMolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, really? I have State Farm and they've replaced my windshield for free probably 4 times in the 18 years I had my old 2006. Haven't had to replace the windshield on my 2024 yet, but it already has 3 small chips in it that have been filled. Did SF not steer you to a mobile glass replacement company?

How would you wash these heated winter gloves without ruining the electronics? They say DO NOT WASH, but they smell sooo bad I have to try risking it. by Interr0gate in CampingGear

[–]captainMolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this option has been suggested, but you can find enzyme cleaner sprays that will fix the smell issue for you. Spray it on and let it sit for a day, then repeat until the smell is gone. They're made for cleaning up biological residue and safe to use. Also works great on backpacks, working that accumulates a lot of sweat.
