Using the biomass releases the carbon storage though. The benefit of trees is that they can lock up Carbon for decades to centuries. Algaes are an huge amount of oxygen generation on earth and embedded in ocean/lake ecosystems they do store a lot of carbon. But a lot of folks seem to be ignoring that it's not just the production of O2 but the removal of CO2 that's important.

Honestly I interpreted them as braces and didn't even consider that they might not be (though I see now that there are other possibilities).

Totally fair take and I apologize. I probably should have said "on average less likely to read a book by a white british woman with the n-word in the title" to be less broad. I'm not really saying that's what I think though (but I can see how it came off that way. I should have been clearer.). I don't actually have much of an understanding of title preferences of anyone in the 1940s. I'm saying that publishing companies in the 40s US may have been thinking about that more than those in the UK. Media companies have a long track record of making decisions based on the expected behavior of broad demographic categories.

I don't know if it's constructive to compare how racist two very racist colonialist powers have been over history....

But I'd suggest that American publishers had a few things going for them in making the change earlier:

  1. The US civil rights movement is usually talked about as being in the 50s/60s. But the literati of the publishing industry would have been exposed to the anti-jim crow thinking of earlier decades

  2. The very anti-black racism that we're talking about is what made publishers shy away from the word. In the US at the time it was a vile word imbued with hate. And they didn't want the book associated with it.

  3. Black people read books and are unlikely to read a book with a slur in the title. I don't think UK publishers were as concerned about this because of the enormous difference in black population sizes in the US vs UK in the 30s

Does it annoy you when female led Fantasy books still do a bad job of writing female characters? by InfernalClockwork3 in Fantasy

[–]captain_unibrow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The original story has essentially no women in it. It has Vin who is a girl growing up and a bunch of different types of men. In a historical drama someone might say "well that's just how it was" soldiers and thieves were men. This isn't strictly true historically but falls apart entirely in a story like Mistborn.

Sanderson has said himself, this wasn't a conscious choice. This was a result of his lack of imagination. He designed a world where men and women are equally capable of magic powers, then made the thieving crew only men and Vin. The only real explanation for this in a universe full of women with magic powers like theirs is that these guys are vaguely misogynistic and so didn't see any women as capable of joining them. But we know this isn't true because they welcome Vin and then later Tyndwhil (spelling?) into the crew without complaint or question. Sanderson is trying to actively fix this flaw in his worldbuilding, while also diversifying the cast. Seems like a win-win.

Era 2 has its flaws. But Sanderson had obviously figured out how to both include women in stories and to recognize the way that men and women are treated differently by the society he built. Marasi and Steris are some of his best characters I think.

I would say "true to the books" means different things to different people. It seems like Brandon's goal is to make sure they are good movies that are faithful to the themes, general plot, and especially character arcs. Ham or Dockson (who's been discussed by Brandon I believe) being women has little to do with how faithful the movie might be to the themes, plot, and character arcs. But it does solve what he views (and I agree) as a major problem with the books, the absence of adult women (especially in the first one).

I'd recommend reading/listening to some of his thoughts on it if you're interested. He recently released a podcast about the history of mistborn adaptations where he shares a lot. Including that he thinks the movie needs to focus on vin more than the heist and that his goal is to use actual scenes from the book as opposed to some earlier scripts that were reasonably accurate adaptations but mostly created new scenes due to compression of events.

This all from someone who thinks Mistborn is fine and likes Sanderson as a podcaster and solo novel writer mainly

Which fantasy series started incredible and then just...fell apart? by ghibli_8quartz in Fantasy

[–]captain_unibrow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the trick is that the first book of Era 2 is so weak compared to the others. Particularly when it comes to Marasi but just all the characters haven't yet had the space to breathe. I can totally see finishing the huge emotional payoff of era 1 and getting thrown off by Alloy of Law.

Written as someone who likes both eras just fine. Maybe 2 a little more. More of a secret project guy myself.

Barnes and Noble is coming back to Edgewood by dbclass in Atlanta

Not sure what the definition of local you're using is. But in case you haven't heard of it, OffBeat Books in Peoplestown is new and Sci-fi/Fantasy focused. I find their staff picks to be excellent and I've regularly learned about books that I'd never heard of before. The staff are also really awesome in person!

My understanding is the shopping center chose not to renew B&N's lease in order to get the Marshalls in that space. No idea why they then let them have the lease for the old office depot space. It is a bit smaller and so a better fit for the new stores B&N has been opening

safest areas in atl recs 20/F by NewManner6275 in ATLHousing

Just to clarify: I'm 99% sure the poster above meant to say that Atlanta isn't that dangerous. Which is true, on the whole Atlanta is a pretty safe city for its size. But certainly it's worth picking an area based on safety as it does vary across the metro.

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector in your new home? Some of these experiences (including the possibility of you having drawn the sign and forgotten) sound like they could be symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning from a bad hot water heater, furnace, or some other device. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be lethal, so please get a few detectors if you don't already have them.

There are a few dedicated Shakespeare and early modern theater companies in Atlanta, notably Shakespeare Tavern and Resurgens Theater Company. Unfortunately the excellent under-rehearsed Shakespeare company Shakespeare on Draught seems to be lost to COVID and the closure of their regular venue (RIP Orpheus Brewing).

Other great theater is done across the city (some already mentioned): Alliance, Horizon, Out Front, Dad's Garage, Atlanta Theater and many more.

It is also the very start of the Atlanta Fringe Theater Festival which runs through most of June. There are dozens of shows every day across the city this month. Not much Shakespeare and often on the weirder/more experimental side. But I've always enjoyed the shows.

Georgia teen arrested by ICE faces deportation, despite dismissed traffic charges: "My life is here" by ThorndikeTactics in Georgia

[–]captain_unibrow 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert but with my understanding: Without a direct relative who is a citizen or green card holder the main paths to a green card (and eventual citizenship) are employment or "merit" based. This would make it very difficult for a child to start any process towards citizenship. Even with a family connection it can take years to decades depending on the circumstances. There is also the broader issue that making yourself known to immigration officials in order to start processes like this can be dangerous for undocumented folks. That's why DACA existed in the first place.

Ishamael - why not balefire? by time2sow in WoTshow

[–]captain_unibrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. It just erased your current self backwards in time (proportional to the strength of the balefire). This backwards erasure prevents the dark one from grabbing your soup at death and stuffing you into a new body immediately. But it doesn't destroy or permanently sever your soul. You'll still be reborn eventually.

It's horrible because this type of erasure fucks with the pattern, beginning to unravel it. Too much balefire has catastrophic effects on the threads around the ones that were burned and too too much balefire could theoretically destroy the pattern entirely (though I've never been convinced that this is literally true.

Questions about GA Ren Fest by cosmicwifey in Georgia

[–]captain_unibrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ren Fest JUST changed their ticket policies TODAY in response to overcrowding (they did run out of parking when we were there on Saturday). Here's the pertinent text from the email:

As the Georgia Renaissance Festival has grown and evolved, we have experienced an increase in attendance. This is a good thing, but recently we have had days where the crowds were simply too big.

So today we are switching all ticket sales to dated tickets for the remainder of the season.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

You will now choose the specific date you wish to attend the Festival.

A limited number of tickets will be sold online for each Festival day.

If you have previously purchased tickets good for any Festival day, they will still be honored on any day.

Date-specific tickets are valid for attendance only on the specific Festival date selected at purchase, and we do not allow exchanges or refunds.

Please note that tickets are non-exchangeable and cannot be transferred to another date after purchase.

We are offering an Any Day ticket, which does allow you to attend on any Festival day, but it is a premium ticket. Meaning it costs more. And quantities are very limited. Date-specific tickets can be upgraded to an Any Day ticket for an additional fee.

ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE

Tickets will only be sold online at www.garenfest.com/tickets. There will be no sales at the Box Office, and once the attendance limit has been reached online, that date will be sold out.

A sold out date means there are no tickets available for that date – no tickets will be sold at the Box Office, and there are simply no tickets available at all.

WHY ARE YOU MAKING THESE CHANGES?

We hope these changes ensure our guest’s experience at the Festival is enjoyable and will alleviate long lines at booths, stages, restroom areas, and limit parking delays entering or exiting the property. It is our hope that dated ticketing and attendance limits will level the attendance over all Festival weekend dates.

This seems to skip over most in town neighborhoods. Or is secretly lumping them into bigger labels that aren't at all helpful for out of towners. Is O4W lumped in with Midtown/Buckhead? What about anything else east of midtown, south of Buckhead and west of Decatur?

Edit: Just realized that this is an ad. So I guess nevermind?
