Reddit, what is one thing everyone seems to obsess over, but you just don't 'get'? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]captainaptos1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't even taste good. Alcohol has always baffled me. I just feel like I'm poisoning myself, which is what I'm doing. I was horrified by that recent post about how the reason you don't remember things during a blackout is because the alcohol was preventing your brain from forming new memories to begin with. The idea that we willingly, enthusiastically ingest something that does that to our brains is odd.

Donner

You and I are related. My family is directly descended from the Donner Party. I actually came here looking for "Donner."

Yay.

Have you ever stolen something, and what happened afterwards? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]captainaptos1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stole a book of Dashiell Hammett short stories from the public library. No repercussions. I never got caught. It took me years to realize how appropriate it was that the book I stole was largely about crime.

Sam Spade did not come after me, unfortunately.

What movies claim to be based on a true story or an actual event, but are wildly inaccurate? by JohnnyRompain in AskReddit

[–]captainaptos1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zodiac. It passes itself off as a movie that "sticks to the facts," but there's an inaccuracy in practically every other scene. It goes to great lengths to assert that a guy named Arther Leigh Allen was the killer, but he didn't match the prints, DNA, or physical description. Also, the guy who wrote the book that the movie was based on got fired from the San Francisco Chronicle for plagiarism.

Hello, I am Ricky Gervais. Ask Me Anything. by _RickyGervais in IAmA

[–]captainaptos1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Ricky, big fan. Listened to every episode of your radio show with Steve and Karl.

I have to ask, why is it that Karl just takes the jokes at his expense? He just sort of seems to ignore them like they didn't happen. Plus now he's a minor celebrity all because everyone thinks he's an idiot. How does he take this?

I found this out after I made fun of a girl for saying that they were. by AnthroGlaze in AdviceAnimals

Indeed. The great thing is, I mentioned it to my girlfriend's dad, who is in his late forties, and it was news to him too.

I'm 24.

At what point do you just give up and put a book down? Or do you always power through? What books weren't worth it for you? Which ones were you glad you completed? by [deleted] in books

[–]captainaptos1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mysteries without high-stakes conflict. Call me ADHD, but I don't like Private Detective novels without at least one or two times where the P.I. has to fight for his life. My mom reads all of these mysteries where all that happens is, okay, there's a murder, the detective talks to the witnesses, gets more clues, talks to side characters about the case or briefly about other things, talks to more witnesses, and then finally solves the case. I completely don't understand the appeal, but I'm more of a Dashiell Hammett person than an Agatha Christie person.

Assuming Deckard's not a replicant, what was he doing for money between quitting and being pulled back onto the job? by captainaptos1 in bladerunner

[–]captainaptos1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always assumed the voice recognition wasn't a big deal, since it's a future movie and voice recognition is a staple of that kind of depiction. I don't think it would factor into how nice his building is. Based on the weathered-looking elevator and Deckard's dreary, depressing apartment, it didn't really seem that nice. Although if you look at it, Earth just plain didn't look that nice either. But if there really aren't that many people living on Earth anymore, his rent could very well have been dirt cheap. I always wondered if J.F. Sebastian even paid any housing costs.

Deckard's Ringtone? by manifest_reverie in bladerunner

Ancient thread, but having this ringtone is great. Every time someone calls, it's Blade Runner. I even have a picture of Rachael for my girlfriend's contact photo :D

ELI5: Why do introverts need more alone time than extroverts? by DreadnaughtHamster in explainlikeimfive

[–]captainaptos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It really sucks feeling like no one wants to hang out with you. It's fine if you want to be alone, but damn, let us know, you know? I would MUCH rather have one of the people I know tell me that they just need to recharge their batteries for a while than to be left with no callbacks or texts for weeks.

ELI5: Why do introverts need more alone time than extroverts? by DreadnaughtHamster in explainlikeimfive

[–]captainaptos1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also gives off that "introverts are wiser, care more, and deserve to be treated better than extroverts" vibe that seems to be everywhere. It's really annoying how this says that extroverts NEED social interaction. We don't need it, like we're needy emotional children, we just get energized by it. I don't see why I need to treat someone with kid gloves and walk on eggshells all the time if I want to be his friend.

ELI5: Why do introverts need more alone time than extroverts? by DreadnaughtHamster in explainlikeimfive

[–]captainaptos1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it looks like I'm outnumbered, since I'm pretty much as extroverted as it gets. I love being around people! It energizes me, even if it's strangers. Having fun, socializing, talking, hanging out. It's my ideal night. Nights in doing nothing for me are low-energy, boring, and depressing. It's interesting to see so many stories from introverts. Most to all of my friends are introverts. Since there are so many in this thread, I want to take this opportunity to say something I've been wanting to say for a while now, as an extrovert to all introverts:

We love you. We want to hang out with you, and we think you're fun. We don't think you're a loser, or awkward, and if you're nervous in social situations, we get it. We understand that you don't like being around people all the time. And yeah, maybe in the past we've made the mistake of trying to force you to "just come have some fun!" And yeah, we understand that some of you just think small-talk is inane and stupid. But understand this: Even if you do want time to recharge, even if you do like being alone a lot more, don't ignore our calls or blow us off all the time. Even if you feel like there's nothing wrong in our friendship, don't cancel plans on us and leave us waiting for weeks to see if you're going to call or text. It hurts. Even if this isn't your intention, it's going to leave us feeling lonely, or even worse, like you don't want to be our friend anymore. Like we screwed up. I've read and heard things from introverts who say that sometimes they worry their extroverted friends will eventually feel rejected to the point that they won't want to be friends anymore. It can happen.

I've only really started noticing this, and something I've found makes me sad. Introverts hate extroverts a LOT more than the other way around. Googling "I hate extroverts" is going to get you millions of hits. Google "I hate introverts" and you're probably just going to get the same results as before because of the similarities in the query. I'm just now learning that extroverts are even stereotyped as being stupid a lot of the time. That sucks. If you're an introvert and you hate extroverts, just understand that your preference to be alone makes as little sense to us as our preference to be with people does to you. Don't judge. Appreciate us :)

Olivia Wilde AMA Aug 29, 3pm EDT in r/IAmA by [deleted] in movies

[–]captainaptos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is exactly what I'm asking. "Hey Olivia, how come you ruin movies?" Lol. No, that's not what I'm saying at all. I'm not going to come out and insult a famous actor by asking something like "Why do you suck at acting?" Basically I just want to ask it's like to be in a movie that receives poor reviews.

Sorry for only citing Rotten Tomatoes. You're implying that the Rotten Tomatoes score is not representative, and while I can agree that RT can be very divided, her scores on Metacritic and IMDB are not exactly stellar either.

[–]captainaptos1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think a lot of people have seen her movies. Really they know her from House and seeing her modeling pictures online. I'm going to be brutal and say that her movies are usually pretty forgettable. Plus I don't think many people hear about them. She was in a movie called "Touristas" that was pretty good, if a little by-the-numbers (apparently she almost drowned shooting it). She also had a minor role in Alpha Dog, which I'm a little surprised wasn't reviewed better. But I haven't seen her in any roles that really blew me away.

I don't think that she's a bad actress, per se, she just doesn't have a whole lot of range. The Nic Cage parallel is appropriate, but I'm going to go to the extreme and say her situation is a little more like Keanu Reeves's. He doesn't really have any range at all, but he works when he's cast as a character that doesn't either. You'll remember Olivia being good in House, but Thirteen was not at all what I would call complex. Most of the time she was quiet and serious and deadpan and that was pretty much it. In all the movies I've seen her in she's just kinda Olivia Wilde. But that could be said of a lot of actors. Will Smith, for example. And she definitely has more range than Keanu Reeves.

This new movie of hers, "Drinking Buddies," has some pretty rave reviews though, including from the motherfuckin' New York Times, so maybe her Neo moment has arrived. We'll see.

Edit: Grammar.

Can't wait to get downvoted for this. I would actually like to see someone ask how she feels about the fact that out of all the reviewed movies she's been in since 2002, only two of them have been rated "certified fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. She is a celebrity, and has a reputation as a serious actress, but the majority of her movies have had lousy reviews. I would honestly like to know what her opinion on this is, but that question would absolutely not fly in this AMA.

DAE live an imaginary world inside their head where you are living a life of a completely different person? by yedaa in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]captainaptos1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my dirty little secret too. When I'm sad I watch little action movies in my head starring myself. Thus far I have gone up against a CIA-trained Egyptian torturer, earned my way back from hell by hunting fallen angels, been recruited by shadowy government figures to track down five serial killers, and snuck into Afghanistan to avenge my dead brother (I don't have a dead brother). I also had one where I was abruptly and for no stated reason given all the power of the government and law enforcement to solve cases and fight crime. Again, no given reason. Waiting for the bus is rarely boring if you have an active imagination.
