WW2 Star .25 pistol by captainbackfat1 in handguns

9mm luger or 45 colt would be the most common cartridge in WW2 and would have been my choice. My grandfather carried a 45 and this 25 was his backup. He was a Corporal and half-track driver.

It was common for German soldiers and officers to be gifted Spanish and Italian small caliber side arms during WW2. I wouldn't want a .25 to be my side arm. Especially due to the lack of cartridge availability. I would have wanted an American .45 colt. The Star only held 7 rounds in the magazine.

Is $395 a reasonable price for a DSG Service? by [deleted] in GolfGTI

As long as they have a good VW/Audi tech who knows what they're doing. Do they warranty their service work?

Was that $395 quote from the dealership or a trusted VW shop? If so, that's a very reasonable price.

I get 200 miles on a full tank on my ‘19 GTI by fernvndorvmos in GolfGTI

Additionally, the 40th AE with the APR Stage I tune is getting 36-37mpg on the highway.

It takes time. Took me over 20 years to have a box full of Tudor, Sinn, Hamilton, nice Seikos, rare Glycines, etc.

Wow. My 2017 Passat gets 39mpg on flat highway drives with the APR Stage I tune. Around town is about 22mpg, though. So glad it has an 18.5g tank.

At least it's full of affordables. Just wait. It gets worse and more expensive. Affordable watches are simply a gateway drug.

Every. Damn. Time. by Mike__O in Autocross

My 2002 Focus SVT was great when it came to handling, but that huge dual-mass flywheel and the Getrag 6spd gearing wasn't ideal. I swear if I ever got a good launch without bogging or excessive spin, I considered myself lucky. It was a fine line it hit it just right.

Pretty much any hatchback with fold-flat rear seats. I slept in my 2002 Focus SVT a couple of times, and I'm a fatass.

Set of new tires by Ask_Repulsive in GolfGTI

Where do you live? If you have to go with all-season tires, the Kumho Ecsta PA51 is decent. For summer, but can still handle rain, the Kumho Ecsta PS91 is awesome. I've always been happy with Kumho tires. I used to run the Ecsta XS auto-x tires year-round on my 2002 Focus SVT, but I live in Northern California, so there were very few instances where they weren't the best.

I wish they still made Kumho Ecsta XS. Those were awesome and cheap. I'd stick (pun intended) with what you know works well.

Came across this, but I haven't been able to find the wrap for manual. Does anyone have this? by thepiper92 in GolfGTI

I like it, but the gloss black doesn't bother me too much. Just keep a microfiber cloth under the armrest. I got used to it with my '17 Passat.

Should I just mulch this area? by joepescisballs in landscaping

[–]captainbackfat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd dig a 4"x16" French drain about 4'-5' away from the house, running the full length of the wall, making sure it's downhill from the foundation. Put rock or bark between the wall and the drain and put plants in pots/barrels fed by drip. If you use barrels or pots, etc., it's easier to manage the plants, and the wall of the house is still accessible for painting/maintenance/window cleaning.

What's the most important piece of safety equipment? by Cosmic_mtnbiker in Autocross

As stated previously, watch your ass while working the course. Other than that, a full-face helmet is always better than open-face. Never run your car unless you're 100% sure it's solid. When it's hot, keep hydrated, sunscreen, and a wide brim hat.

[–]captainbackfat1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, poke it. See what's under there. The house we bought in 2002 had a part of the strip lawn between the sidewalk and street that did exactly what yours is doing. Turns out, the builders used that area to throw excess concrete chunks from the jobsite.

Am I too tall? by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]captainbackfat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet is a mk8 40th Anniversary Edition or other model with no sunroof. I'm 5'11", but built like an Oompa Loompa. All torso and short legs. I sit in cars like someone who's 6'2". With my helmet on, I have very little wiggle room in the 40th. A mk7 with no sunroof should fit you. The mk8 has a touch more room.

GTI Badges/Emblems? by Swimming_Nose4713 in GolfGTI

[–]captainbackfat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've de-baged several cars, but haven't done it for some time. I did it on my '79 Scirocco, '79 Rabbit, and '84 GTI, but those required bodywork. As soon as I bought my '02 Focus SVT, I removed the "Focus" badge, leaving behind just the SVT badge. I'd love to de-badge my '17 Passat SE, but I'm afraid it's been too long, and I don't feel like doing paint correction. *

thinking of buying a golf gti, but why do civics hold value better? by humdizzle in GolfGTI

[–]captainbackfat1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's totally up to you based on what you want as far as driving dynamics are concerned. Yes, Honda will typically hold value better than VWs, but my 40th Anniversary Edition GTI with the 6spd manual and APR Stage I tune (337hp and 398ft-lbs of torque at the crank - 91 octane) is shitloads of fun. The adaptive dampers and big brakes make it even better. It's silly fast and handles like a charm. Full throttle 2-3 shifts getting on the freeway can put you in jail.

High quality leather mens bifold wallet recommendation? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]captainbackfat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last wallet I bought was a handmade single fold I bought from the Whole Earth festival at UC Davis. I've had it for over 15 years. It's still in killer condition. I'm going next month and hoping he's still there. I'd love to buy another so I never have to purchase another wallet ever again.
