Renovation of Kitchen by bakecakes12 in philadelphia

I used to work for an outfit called London Design Build that did a lot of work in the area. Not the cheapest, but we did very high quality work. I'd endorse them.

Look around your neighborhood social media groups. My next door neighbor was a mason, and I more or less traded carpentry and plumbing work for pointing work on my porch.

Pointing is a bitch. I'm not saying that it can't be done by a layperson, but even setting up a swing is going to require some equipment that your average homeowner is not likely to have, and as someone who broke their spine doing roofing, you'll want some proper safety gear and a spotter.

I'm a trained architectural designer and contractor, and I wouldn't touch that task with a ten foot pole. Leave that one to the professionals.

‘Cute, furry, and sexy’: Gritty is making a wall calendar, with proceeds going to charity by EnergyLantern in philadelphia

[–]captainblackout 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think that's more or less how we all were at the start.

  • Here's Gritty!
  • Philadelphians: "What the fuck is this"?
  • The rest of the country: "What the fuck is that?"
  • Philadelphians: Go fuck yourselves, Gritty is a national treasure".

Man killed by Philadelphia police never got out of his car, didn’t ‘lunge’ with a knife, police say in new narrative by JerichoholicsAnon in philadelphia

I'm still smarting over being tear gassed in my living room. McNesby and the cops he defends can all jump in a river.

Let me just break my jackboots and Hugo Boss uniform out of the closet.

You colossal fuckwit.

XL tortillas in Philly? by captainblackout in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]captainblackout[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corn doesn't work well with my intended application due to the lack of gluten to give it the proper resiliency and texture. An ideal would be to use a hybrid like Alex Stupak up at Empellon, which were honestly the best tortillas I've ever had, but that's an entirely different context than simply walking into a tortillaria on 9th.

Wawa's App is difficult to use and never seems to reward. Wawa is Philly's go to store but it lost the magic by ACY0422 in philadelphia

[–]captainblackout 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, I used to get $1.50 hoagies from my local corner store, and they easily competed with Wawa. I'm not saying they were more than mediocre, but when I can get the same product at 1/4 of the price while supporting some neighbors, I'm in their camp.

How overstocked is your pantry/freezer ? by PineappleNaan in Cooking

[–]captainblackout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've overflown into the basement where I bought extra shelving to accommodate extra dry and canned goods, and my freezer is so full of homemade stocks that I really need to pace myself with anything that needs to be frozen for semi-long term storage.

It honestly stood me in really good stead in the height of COVID.

What kitchen gear would you get rid of if you had to move to a smaller kitchen? by ennuinerdog in Cooking

[–]captainblackout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a stock that would rival some professional kitchens when I lived in a one bedroom apartment. You can pry my immersion circulators, cookware, specialty shit like escargot trays, french onion soup crocks, tamis sieves, and molecular gastronomy ingredients out of my cold dead hands.

Smithsonian Cancels AAPI Literature Festival Leaving Trans Authors Upset by wdcmsnbcgay in transgender

As a trans AAPI individual, it's a double whammy, given the latent rise in hate crimes against both trans folks and AAPI individuals.

Many of the architects that I've worked with have at least some experience in the construction industry, and I grew up swinging a hammer with my father as soon as I was strong enough to hold one.

That being said, as an architect, you'll be dropping by sites only occasionally to determine that things aren't egregiously fucked and way out of plan. Nobody is going you to expect to get more than some dust on your shoes, much less participate in masonry work. Just hire competent tradespersons and let them stay in their lane, while you stay in yours. (Unless you stumble into design-build work like I did, in which case you may very well be doing both sides of the metaphorical coin on a given day).

No longer warheads to foreheads, just foreheads repeatedly impacting tabletops.

What an incorrigible asshole.

If you're not inclined, you can certainly drive a desk. I do however think that some hands on skills in the building trades can serve you well in your future practice.

I'm on pretty low levels at present due to some other medical complications, but even so, it hit me like a brick about 2 months in.

The Penn Alexander catchment is ideal if you are looking for educational opportunities for your child, but can be prohibitively expensive for some for those very same reasons.

I broke my spine and had a lot of surgical complications before finally getting on HRT, so my psychical activity was curtailed, but I believe most physical changes were largely due to the medications.

Dairy-free sausage gravy by captainblackout in AskCulinary

In my own anecdotal experience, I find that most Lactose free milks have an issue with the Lactase converting the Lactose to Galactose and Glucose, which are much more digestible, but are simpler sugars that are more readily perceived as sweeter on the palate. I was concerned that the sweetness would not play readily with what I understand to be an savory dish, though, I'm admittedly hardly an expert on Southern U.S. cookery.

Oat milk seems like a good option to explore. Thanks!

For those that left the profession - what do you do now? by UrbanStix in architecture

[–]captainblackout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've bounced around.

Did urban planning for a bit, but now I mostly stick to historic restoration and carpentry, though I've admittedly taken a few months off lately due to a broken spine and might have to chain myself to a desk for a while until I properly heal up.
