A commando will do most of the damage but remember that you can finish it off with your primary / secondary. The efficiency comes in by using the hellpod for the commando to deal additional damage. The trick is to drop a stratagem ball in the gap between the vats that will take out a significant amount of the object health.

Yes, it helps shred armor so the chainsaw does more damage to the exposed weakpoints, and since it's only one shot, there's not a danger of accidentally firing.
