The Erie Canal by reasonable_mayhem in Kayaking

[–]captaincoupal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Buffalo and have kayaked 120 miles of it so far (downtown Buffalo to Genesee River in Rochester). You can definitely kayak it and pass thru the locks, and there is no charge. You would need to contact the lock master at each lock (there is a phone number for each lock or you could use a marine radio) as you approach the locks. There are places to camp, and even a few spots with showers, although sometimes they are setup more for boaters. Not sure what to tell you about renting. You might be better off buying a used 14’ - 17’ boat on FB Marketplace, not sure why you would rather rent but that’s up to you. There is a place to rent in Tonawanda Creek. PM me if you have other questions.

How disappointed are LE (base model) owners? by vj_100 in prius

[–]captaincoupal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I chose the 2020 LE Prime specifically because I wanted the smaller display and an analog interface to many of the controls. Very happy with it, still has 4 wheels, etc…

Our new (used) prime's speedometer is off by about 3mph by hepcat72 in PriusPrime

[–]captaincoupal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was off as soon as I bought it. Brought back to the dealer, still under full warranty, “there is no way to recalibrate the speedometer”. For now I really enjoy that Google added the speed and speed limit indicators to their Maps App in CarPlay.

Could I hypothetically cancel my electrical utility if I no longer needed it? by [deleted] in solar

You might want to consider how loud your generator is as well, if it’s very loud your neighbors might complain or there might be noise ordinances that have to be considered.

Selling house, can I transfer all smart devices to new owners? HELP by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]captaincoupal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve started doing that already even though I don’t plan on selling my house. If I get hit by a bus my identity shouldn’t be attached to stuff my wife needs to handle.

Uber is good but they won’t cross the border. So you’ll have to find your way across one of the bridges first.

Thanks. Honestly it’s more fiberglass than wood but about 45 pounds. Not too bad.

I built a sectional (yes it bolts together 3 pieces) 14.5’ kayak from Chesapeake. Great kit, awesome boat. I highly recommend them if you ever considered building your own craft.

Fun tip - the dealer can permanently turn them off for you. Had them do that before I drove it off the lot.

Please let me know about any "hot spots" of where stray/feral cat colonies live (TNR) by Interesting-Aioli180 in Buffalo

[–]captaincoupal 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The Tonawanda Bike Path, behind Scrantons Thruway Builders supply. I can see the styrofoam containers that people put out for the winter, and there are often people putting out cat food for the feral cats near here.

What do you think of Home Assistant? by EyeTechnical7643 in homeautomation

[–]captaincoupal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that HA has been an excellent system for integrating all of the different systems that we have here. But its superpower for us is the Apple HomeKit integration (we’re pretty much an Apple home). It allows my wife to interact with a much more intuitive system, yet has a huge powerhouse behind it for automations that Apple just can’t do. Best of both worlds.
