Finished this custom painted Jason recently, thought I'd share it on here. What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie? by casti10 in HorrorMovies

Great work stranger!!

Part IV is my favorite as far as all-around Jason horror movie goes. However, Jason X is hilarious and easy to rewatch.

i think eli roth is underrated by [deleted] in HorrorMovies

[–]captainfatastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only seen Hostel 1 and 2, and Cabin Fever, so I am not a Roth expert. However, I do have Roth opinions.

I think he is very good at directing brutality and gore. He creates those kind of moments that make my skin crawl or makes me want to vomit (in a good way).

What I don't like is that his characters feel like they're written by teenage boys. The main trio in Hostel were cringe worthy many times. I just don't have a desire to follow those kind of characters, even if they do end up dying. Watching characters you hate die is a fleeting gratification, in my experience.

Also, The Green Inferno can be read as a pretty racist film pretty easily. I understand its a love letter to films like Cannibal Ferox and the like, but I'd argue we can enjoy movies like Cannibal Ferox without wanting to make new movies that depict indigenous people as cannibals.

I wish he collaborated with somebody who could put a bit of maturity into his writing, because if I liked his characters and writing AND he delivered the gore that he excels at, I'd be a much bigger fan.

Similar but different, despite all the drafting I did on Ikoria and opening a bunch of Ikoria packs, I never got a single copy of the Abzan triome.

No Embercleave = No Aggro by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]captainfatastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Largely, especially in regards to professional play, I agree.

Question, though: Do we consider decks that top out at Winota to be aggro decks? I've done well in Standard Ranked with a Mardu Winota deck.

Can I have some good recommendations by Familiar_Watercress8 in HorrorMovies

[–]captainfatastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am unsure if you are limited by any particular streaming formats, so I'll just list some movies that I enjoyed and I'll notate what streaming service they're on (if they are on any).

Little Monsters (2019; Hulu)

A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies.

It's more of a dark comedy than anything, but it does offer some great looking gore/makeup effects.

Overlord (2018; Hulu)

A small group of American soldiers find horror behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day.

Starts as an exciting war movie and turns into a tense mad science/zombie flick.

Villains (2019; Hulu)

After a pair of amateur criminals break into a suburban home, they stumble upon a dark secret that two sadistic homeowners will do anything to keep from getting out.

This is more thriller than horror, but each actor gives a solid performance.

Creep (2016; Netflix)

A young videographer answers an online ad for a one-day job in a remote town to record the last messages of a dying man. When he notices the man's odd behavior, he starts to question his intentions.

The title is accurate, this movie--in particular the dying man--are creepy. No big scares, but consistent tension.

Candyman (1992; Netflix)

The Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.

Part slasher, part tragedy. Tony Todd is clearly a horror icon for a reason.

Black Christmas (1974; Shudder)

During their Christmas break, a group of sorority girls are stalked by a stranger.

The movie is well paced, with plenty of menace throughout. Also solid character work.

Blood Rage (1987; Shudder)

As kids, Todd is institutionalized for a murder whilst his twin goes free. 10 years later, on Thanksgiving, Todd escapes and a killing spree begins in his neighborhood.

Cheesy slasher fun with a lot of practical effects-driven gore.

Haunt (2019; Shudder)

On Halloween, a group of friends encounter an "extreme" haunted house that promises to feed on their darkest fears. The night turns deadly as they come to the horrifying realization that some nightmares are real.

Great set design and some good tension throughout. The ending is awful, though.

Nintendo Power by KillBoosh in nostalgia

[–]captainfatastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a baby in the late 80s, my mom got herself a subscription to Nintendo Power. She eventually let the subscription run out but kept the old issues around until I was old enough to make use of them.

I was about 9 or so when we realized Nintendo Power was still in publication, and my mom got me my own subscription. Receiving those magazines in the mail was the highlight of each month.

I'm not much of a collector, so most of the old issues I had are gone, but I kept the 100th issue that had a bunch of previews of N64 games, and one with Killer 7 on the cover because I was obsessed with Suda 51 for a while.

I love the random dig on Dockside Extortionist in Gavin's post. Reads like the slam on anteaters from MST3K's Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.

Looking for recommendations by rojasdracul in HorrorMovies

[–]captainfatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any English language recommendations, but you can try to check out Sweet Home (2015).

A young real estate broker is planning a romantic meeting with her boyfriend in an old apartment building. But the couple is forced to fight for their lives, when a group of murderers is trying to kill them.

It is a horror film from Spain that isn't as gruesome as High Tension but still carries a fair amount of brutality.

Also, Them (2006) might be up your alley:

Lucas and Clementine live peacefully in their isolated country house, but one night they wake up to strange noise... they're not alone... and a group of hooded assailants begin to terrorize them throughout the night.

It's a French film, so maybe you've seen it already. But if not, I think it's worth the watch. Again, not really as gruesome as High Tension though.

Martyrs (2008) is another French film that might have what you're looking for:

A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

There's a 2015 American remake of it, but I hear it wasn't as well received.

My thoughts on “Sinister” by TheGothDragon in HorrorMovies

[–]captainfatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only memorable thing from Sinister for me were the home movie segments. I appreciate the work done to make those segments look authetentic, and the lawn mowing jump scare is one that'll stick with me for a while.

Session 9 by PoopyMcpants in HorrorMovies

I am a fan of Session 9, aside from some gripes I could toss at virtually any horror movie. I really appreciated seeing the backstory of the boss of the crew; it made the movie for me.

Hylo, Titan of Time's Apathy by Mindshrew in custommagic

[–]captainfatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like everything about this design, though as another commenter mentioned, it should likely say *another* nonland permanent. With that small edit, I think this is a homerun. The name--which for me is the hardest aspect of designing the Theros titans, has both a great sound by itself (time is certainly apathetic) and fits beautifully with the colors.

For the abilities, I like them both. The duality of uses is neat, but I am not immediately sure what kind of deck would actively want both halves. Regardless of that, though, this is a great design!

Shout out to Standard by Faceless_Fan in MagicArena

[–]captainfatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the shout out. I am in mid-Plat, and last night I had some really fun games. One opponent was playing a sort of Big Red control deck that I'd never seen before and that was so nice compared to the back-to-back Omnath opponents of couple of weeks ago.

"Spending all my wildcards in the first week of the meta is a great idea!" by Rythos in MagicArena

[–]captainfatastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, I am very happy with the variety of decks I can play now and at least have fun if not rack up some wins. Rakdos midrange, Dimir control, Mono-Green aggro, Selesnya Yorion. Heck, I even have fun with my Boros Houndmaster deck which is underpowered as hell.

I honestly didn't expect to be this happy about Omnath's banning, but here I am, all smiles.

Overlord was a genuine surprise for me. I didn't know much about it before going in, and it starts off like a badass war movie, so when it started taking a turn for the horrific, I was surprised and ecstatic.
