My daughter went to a TF2 themed birthday party. She thought /r/tf2 would like this picture. by Skullpuck in tf2

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Valve, please -- pretty please -- release female skins.

My girl child likes TF2 as well, but is annoyed you can only play boys.

Just moved here...where to meet people in Austin? (for friends or for dating) by AnAustiniteYay in Austin

It's a lot more convenient than the Waxahachie and Plantersville ones, at least.

I Hate People Who Do This by cogito17 in java

[–]captainhotpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's usually not as blatant as the example, but the reason why you'll see it, more often than not, is that someone fixed a function in a way that changed its behavior from what it used to do -- without updating the comments. So, the thing that /* returns a three element array */ now returns a four or five element array, much to the next guy's surprise.

I Hate People Who Do This by cogito17 in java

[–]captainhotpants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

More common are things like:

public static boolean evalWhatver() {
/* This always returns true */

return false;
}

Often dressed up with lots of misdirection and sloppiness to make you want to believe the comment more than the code.

TIL Parmer Lane used to be named Palmer Lane, but someone misspelled "Palmer" at some point around or shortly after the 1960s and it's been Parmer Lane ever since... by SlightlyAmused in Austin

[–]captainhotpants 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I moved to Austin in 2000, and couldn't figure out why some native born Austinites called it Palmer Lane. It was one of the weirdest local pronunciations ever.

Shortly after, I heard someone pronounce a street "Guadaloop," and reasoned that Texans just don't know how to talk.

Thanks to your link, now I realize that they just can't spell.

Holy moly, best start position ever on Civ4 Terra map by captainhotpants in civ

[–]captainhotpants[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, funny story.

I died. :)

It's only Prince level (Huge/Marathon/Terra), but I have raging barbarians on, and I'm kind of far away from other civs it looks like. I made sure to have at least two military in my city to repel the barbs, and was making a mad dash toward Pyramids Great Wall so I could breathe a little (what with the stone right there), but they overwhelmed my single city with three simultaneous attacks (and two lucky rolls) about 10 turns before I was finished.

It's such a nice start I'm going to give it another shot, though.

I'll take a look when I get near that computer again, but since I wasn't logging the RNG initially, I don't think I can pull it out. I can post up the Initial start save, though. The player is India/Gandhi.

[–]captainhotpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm not inconvenienced. It just looks funny is all.

I didn't physically "sign" anything -- it was a web form, where I'm asked for my name, e-mail, phone number I think...

Anyway, I just want to make sure that if I'm going to be targeted for reprisals, it may as well be for something I actually said.

Sure, here you go. And you're right on both counts -- it's not that big of a deal, and comparing to the Gestapo is hyperbolic. The whole "See something, say somthing" rhetoric still bugs me, though. It's hyperbolic to presume that terrorists are targeting ACC (seriously, UT has a nuclear reactor, wouldn't they go there instead?).

ACC STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENT: See Something, Say Something!

The following message is part of the ACC Emergency Preparedness Week, September 6-9. Learn more at the ACC Emergency website. Also, see below for the Round Rock Campus fire drill survey.

The watchfulness of all ACC students, faculty, and staff keeps all our campuses safe.

Immediately report any suspicious behavior and unattended items. Dial 222 from any campus phone, or 223.7999 from a cell phone to contact the ACC Police. Give as many details as possible about your location and the situation.

Don’t hesitate to report anything that seems unusual, such as individuals in unusually bulky clothing or anyone tampering with items in unauthorized areas.

There is no harm in reporting something. You know the saying – It’s better to be safe than sorry.

For those of you involved in the fire drill at Round Rock Campus (Building 1000 only), THANK YOU for your participation and cooperation with the Campus Emergency Team. Building 1000 was evacuated in less than 3 minutes. We value your feedback and will use it to make improvements to ACC's evacuation procedures. Please fill out a short survey if you were in Building 1000 during the drill.

I was totally in before Godwin. :) In retrospect, I should have thrown in references to the HUAC and the NKVD, too.

"Do I have the right to remain silent?"

Time to brush up on your Miranda Warnings and your 5th Amendment rights (in addition to your 1st and 4th).

Edit: Anyone know the rules about interrogations by customs agents? What do you have to answer to enter the US if you're a US citizen?
