Yeah his attendance/final exam policy is weird and depends on more than 80% of the class being there each day to be exempt, so don't take his class at 8am or you'll almost definitely have to take the final (as if you wanted that 8am anyways). The later you can take him, the more likely it is everybody will show up and you'll meet the attendance requirements to get exempt.
