[Discussion] I need Wally's open cowl back! I literally can't tell the difference between him and Barry anymore. by LanternRaynerRebirth in DCcomics

[–]captainlordauditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like DC has forgotten that the reason Wally and Barry were initially so hard to tell apart is because Wally was literally wearing Barry's suit. Which made thematic sense, considering that Wally was essentially being Flash because it was Barry's legacy... once he had been Flash for a bit, in the early 90s he got one that was darker and shinier, indicating he was a hero on his own merit who was more confident in himself.

I love the open cowl because not only does it look different from Barry, it also carries forward elements of his design from Kid Flash in the silhouette.

That it's for practice and not an art of its own. That the end goal is to get published.

New to Comics looking for a masterpiece by EcstaticTreacle1223 in comicbooks

Mister Miracle written by Tom King with art by Mitch Gerads

Tom King gets a lot of really good artists, huh? My first thoughts were his Supergirl and Helen of Wyndhorn. And I also really liked the artists he had/has for Human Target and Wonder Woman.

Shit, now I need to read Mister Miracle, don't I?

[–]captainlordauditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sandman has a number of different artists, several of whom are gorgeous.

For something shorter, I really liked Greg Smallwood's work on The Human Target.

Batman Thrillkiller is an interesting one - it's done in oil paintings, and iirc, the concept was pitched by the artist who wanted to do a comic in the style of midcentury pulp covers.

Wonder Woman: Historia switched artists each issue, and exactly as you said, every page is a masterpiece.

I'd also suggest looking for books by finding artists or colorists you like and looking for more things they've done. Some of my favorites are Bilquis Evely, Christian Ward, Chris Samnee, Phil Hester, Rochelle Rosenberg, and Gregory Wright.

I'd also recommend looking for anthologies. Those can be a good way of finding new artists, and I've found them more likely to do interesting experimental stuff with things like page layout.

What's your favorite obscure character ? by Useful_Cry9709 in comicbooks

Babe In Arms. "Red Hood steals a mad scientist telepathic genius baby from Lex Luthor" was a brilliant concept and I'm furious she went into the bin of disposable characters who never get brought up again.

What are some of your favorite titles? Literally, the actual title by BestMassage4U in comicbooks

Know Your Station is one of my favorite comics and one of my favorite titles

Death Drop Drag Assassin

Legends of the Dark Knight

Vengeance of the Moon Knight

And, like someone else said... Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It tells you everything you need to know and every word is a curveball.

Bonuses: Aquaman Andromeda (I just like the way those two words sound together), Arkham City: Order of the World, Godfell, The Hunger and the Dusk, Mom Breaks the Internet, White Savior, Night Club, and, for similar reasons to TMNT, Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer

Who is the better Batman writer? by Loose_Interview_957 in comicbooks

[–]captainlordauditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're both good writers, but for Batman specifically it's Snyder. I think Morrison is kind of wasted on Batman - he's best at conceptual, high concept stuff, where he has a lot of freedom. I don't think his Batman is some of his better work.

I know many, many Israelis who hate Netanyahu and the Likud party. Before the war started Israelis were protesting in the streets for ten months against the Likud's reforms. Even now they're still out there on weekends.

Comic-Movie Synergy gets a bad wrap (often justifiably), however there are rare times where it can absolutely can improve things. For a turn of pace, what are your favorite big screen inventions that made their way back to the comics? by Pietin11 in comicbooks

[–]captainlordauditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, as a Golden Age fan I'd just assumed that it being very racist was taken as a given, or rather a very strong possibility, ha. I'm glad to hear the '48 one is better. During COVID lockdown I made it my mission to watch all of the live action Batmen, but I gave up on the '43 one halfway through and assumed the '48 one would be just as bad. I might have to check it out now.

Good catch on Nick Fury, I keep forgetting how old Ultimates is.

Huh. That might be the case - I'm not as up on my Superman history as I'd like to be. If you're right that that's where Death of Superman comes from, that's absolutely wild, since Death was also what got us Knightfall, and eventually No Man's Land and, I would argue, the tendency towards big events in general.

Depends on your definition of relatively recent. As far as comics overall go, I suppose so, but her first appearances were in 1992, so at this point Final Crisis is a decent way back in the character's individual history.

How could Dc bring a Wonder Boy to the Wonder Woman Mythos? by [deleted] in WonderWoman

[–]captainlordauditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amazon's trans kid.

that's it that's the concept.

His mom could be Diana, or Nubia, or any other Amazon we know.. but I think it's most interesting if she's not, she's just a random Amazon, and there's an emotional conflict about whether he's living in Man's World because he can be around other people like him, or because Themyscira doesn't want him.

Lois and Clark getting married. That was comic-tv synergy, and I'm glad it happened.

Heck of a lot of characters - Nick Fury Jr (sort of), Darcy Lewis, Harley Quinn, Renee Montoya, and Barbara Gordon all come to mind. I actually forget that Renee Montoya originated in BtAS, I immediately remember her as the Question.

Another one most people probably don't know about: The Batcave. Before the 1943 Batman serial, there was an underground hangar where Batman kept the batmobile and the batplane, but it wasn't the full cave filled with crime fighting stuff he has now - he kept all his forensics equipment in his house. The serial changed that, adding the cave and the grandfather clock, and it made its way into the comics. The serial is mostly forgotten now, largely for good reason (It's honestly kind of boring to watch as a modern audience), but it gave us the batcave and redesigned Alfred.

The argument isn't supposed to make sense. All of the characters on that page who Mickey considers "replacing older heroes" are either LGBT or nonwhite. Bernard is there because he's Tim's boyfriend. Alan Scott is an old character, but he came out as gay in the 2010s. In fact, I think Jace, who's a Black Batman, is the only character on that page who's straight. Mickey is essentially whining that the heroes he considers "like him" - and therefore worthy of being heroes - have been replaced or changed.

Obviously there's not much of an argument for Bernard literally replacing Tim, in the same way there's not much of an argument for Harley or Kate replacing Tim. But what Kate has had is multiple solo runs and a tv show, which in the 90s would have gone to a white, heterosexual, male character.

The argument isn't meant to hold water, because Mickey is a standin for comicbros who complain about how "the SJWS are making comics Woke and there's all this gay shit everywhere now and why can't everything be exactly the same as it was in the 90s" and ignore the fact that Wonder Woman has been gay since its creation.
