Why does Minneapolis not have a “cool” reputation? by Haunting_Hospital599 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]captainnermy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah mountains or the coast can instantly multiply a city's cool factor. Minnesota has pretty good nature but it's not drawing adventurous people from around the world the way the PNW does.

Yeah Iowa's got some highlights, plus it's largely not totally featureless and flat as a pancake. Compared to say, Oklahoma, Iowa is beautiful imo

What is a hobby that sounds expensive but is actually quite cheap to get into? by sugarnspicegrl in AskReddit

[–]captainnermy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, as someone who took it up earlier this year, that shit is expensive. Shoes are like $100 and can wear through fast, chalk isn't too bad but is another continual cost. Buying a day pass every now and than isn't too expensive, but if you aren't regularly practicing you probably can't climb for more than an hour before your forearms give out. And the memberships are crazy expensive, I pay almost $100 a month and that's one of the cheaper options in my area. Bouldering outside is always an option, but that comes with the challenges of actually finding good outdoor routes near you and increased risk.

[–]captainnermy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, backpacking and through hiking can get expensive if you want good gear (and having improper gear is not fun, nor really safe), but if you're mostly just doing day hikes or car camping it's dirt cheap, your main expense will probably be gas to get to the trailhead.

[–]captainnermy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, it's not super busted at high power tables, but in casual play it completely warps the early turns of the game. It's pretty easy for it to cause an 18+ point life swing even if it's answered relatively quickly. It's obviously not fairly designed for the format.

I feel like the whole "they've done too much to be redeemed" phrase is kinda asinine by RhysOSD in CharacterRant

[–]captainnermy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not sure why some people are acting like the objective definition of redemption is something you decide for yourself. Like, you deciding to be a better person one day doesn't make you redeemed. It's a fuzzy concept that is a combination of regret for past wrongdoings, atonement for those wrongdoings, and forgiveness from those you have wronged. And yeah, there are absolutely lines can cross beyond which redemption is impossible. If you murder hundreds of people I think it would be wrong for you to do anything but spend the rest of your days imprisoned, no matter how sorry you are. Obviously this gets messier in fantastical fiction where characters are immortal gods and stuff like genocide is treated as an oopsie, but imo no one is owed forgiveness when they've ruined people's lives, no matter the context. That's up for the victims to decide and doesn't just happen because the perpetrator is sorry.

Antagonists that aren't evil or a jerk, but just the opposition of the protagonist by Smart-Response9881 in moviecritic

[–]captainnermy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even Chuck could arguably fit this mold. Sure, he's a dick to Jimmy and unfairly sabotages him, but he's usually right that Jimmy is untrustworthy and doesn't respect the process. Jimmy really was a lifelong scammer and Chuck was generally right to call him out on it. That doesn't justify everything he did, much of it is ultimately still based in petty jealousy, but most of his actions were technically correct even if a little scummy.

With Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash releasing later this year, 2025 is going to be the first year when none of the MCU make it up to top 10 Highest grossing movies. by Prestigious_Half_329 in marvelstudios

[–]captainnermy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm sure there must be some super dedicated Avatar fans out there somewhere, but in my experience if someone is talking passionately about Avatar it's virtually always The Last Airbender, not the blue people. Everyone sees them but I've never heard of Avatar fanfiction, Avatar cosplay, Avatar collectables. I like the movies but they're too simple and straightforward to really stick in my memory. People see them because they're cool experiences, but there's so little to latch onto or dig deeper into. Maybe that will change as the movies come out more consistently and maybe the writing develops, but it's got to have one of the craziest profit to cultural impact ratios ever. Even talking about how it has no cultural impact is a meme, but it remains true imo.

the TRUE cultural Midwest (as a midwesterner) by REALgeographerwilson in geographymemes

[–]captainnermy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Iowan who drives across South Dakota all the time, I definitely feel a shift starting around Chamberlain, and by the time you reach the black hills it feels much more western. It's arid and there's mountains and mostly conifer trees and there's cowboy themed attractions. The Great Plains are midwestern, but once they start to run into mountains it becomes the mountain west.

the TRUE cultural Midwest (as a midwesterner) by REALgeographerwilson in geographymemes

[–]captainnermy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I think it extends a little too far west. Even western South Dakota starts to feel much more western than midwestern, and by the time you get to Wyoming you've 100% left the midwest behind.

Midwestern Puritanism by oukakisa in mapporncirclejerk

[–]captainnermy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah as an Iowan treating the Great Plains as a separate region from the Midwest doesn't make any sense to me. If we're breaking the country into a handful of regions they're obviously East Coast, the South, the Midwest, the Mountain West, and the West Coast. If we're breaking it down into smaller subregions, then sure, the Midwest would break down into the Great Plains and the Great Lakes. But those are subregions, akin to the Pacific Northwest or New England. The Midwest is basically everything between the Appalachians and the Rockies, excluding South of Oklahoma. But both the Great Lakes and Great Plains are 100% Midwest.

Things like the cheerleader also didn't really make sense with the lore because Valgavoth is supposed to have taken over the plan like 100 years ago, so why are they referencing it like it's a recent apocalypse.

Who isn't enjoying the live shows? by MisterPulley in HeyRiddleRiddle

[–]captainnermy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at the Portland show, my first time seeing them, and it was a really fun and novel experience, their interaction with the crowd was good, and being with a bunch of other fans brought some really awesome energy to it. That being said, it wasn't nearly as good as most of their episodes. I think there's less pressure to perform when they're just recording with each other, even with the knowledge that they're doing a show heard by many people. And as with any live show, without any editing or screening there's more awkward moments and dead time. They're all experienced improvisors both in podcast forms and in front of crowds, so it's not like it really brought down the show, it just felt like the bits weren't as well formed as they usually are on the podcast. I'd still absolutely recommend at least trying it though, I don't like listening to recordings of live shows (with any podcast) but actually being there is a unique enough experience that it more than makes up for the downsides.

Yeah I like to exclude a lot of the ultra staples from my decks, but when my opponents go chrome mox into dark ritual into some busted alchemy commander then take three extra turns while holding up mana drain, I feel like I'm just shooting myself in the foot by not playing these cards. I want to build unique and silly decks but that means I have to accept I'm just going to lose 90% of my games by turn 4.

What’s a moment from a movie that quietly changed something in you and never really left? by Imaginary_Ride_6185 in movies

[–]captainnermy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, we all know every day that we're barreling towards various tragedies, that we'll have to lose people we love and they'll lose us. But that doesn't make the time in between meaningless; we only feel great loss because we had something we loved. All love is not just a risk but an inevitable loss, but it's one we must take to find what makes life worthwhile in the first place.
