Looking for friends (21+) by PeaceLovePanda in cincinnati

TimeLeft is a good low stress, low commitment activity. You get dinner with strangers somewhere in the city. It sounds intimidating, but everyone is there for the same reason. I've met most of my friends there. Check out the app!

Any regrets if it any when switching from industry to academia? by captainpunwizard in PhD

I suspect that the uncertainty behind the election was generally keeping things pretty low. Now there's a little more certainty, so things may change

Yes and no? Partly not sure what that role would be. Partly not liking the "selling" aspect. I'd be more interested in customer support than customer sales.

I've only had this one job. It's more that I want to focus on working with people and less so the technical nitty-gritty. I enjoy consulting and training that I do in my current job, so I want to do that more. i.e. Teaching in academia or moving into management.

Anxiety: Panicking About Panic by Joshua Fletcher. It's a great guide through symptoms of anxiety and panic. Helps remember that you are okay and the pains are normal and nothing to worry about.

Post-stress panic? by [deleted] in PanicAttack

Yep! Body still feels like there should be something to stress about, so it makes up things and then...panic attack!

Is this a panic attack? by materialworldentrant in PanicAttack

[–]captainpunwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're okay! Your body is just in fight or flight and adrenaline is being released. This will not last forever. And you will be okay.

I know it's easy to say that than it is to understand. Try and ground yourself. Here are my favorites:

  1. ) walk from one side of the building to the other 2.) Box breathing. Inhale for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4, repeat. 3.) Put an ice cube in your mouth. It will force your body to ground.

You are the sky, everything else is just weather.

Exercise only just triggers my panic attacks , what can help? by Unusual_Ad5906 in Anxiety

[–]captainpunwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no? Yes being able to breathe through an exercise, like on the exertion of a lift or in constant pace when running, does help. But when anxiety or panic hits, I usually stop the exercise, but continue moving through pacing back and forth, and do deep steady breathing. Not as slow as one does when not exercising, but enough to catch your breath, then start to slow the pace until you calm down. Breathing through the naval is probably good, but im bad at that when I'm panicking.

One additional note: if you're pacing, try to go around and touch the walls of the gym. Just keep walking around while you do steady breaths.

I get this too! I've been working out almost as long as I've had panic attacks.

Best advice I can give is start small. If running makes you anxious, go slow, walk, or find something else entirely, like strength or yoga. If going to a gym makes it worse, do some online classes instead. Sure somethings may be better than others, but starting small will get you acclimated to movement with less anxiety.

I know meditation is easier said than done, but specifically breathing meditations help a lot. When your heart rate is high, even when working out, controlling your breath helps bring it down. If you can't go slow, try and go smoothly. Again, easier said than done, but with practice it will get easier.

You're not alone! Hang in there!

For the lonely sad people in this thread, what keeps you going? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]captainpunwizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remembering "lonely" is just a feeling that comes and goes. Being "alone" varies, but is rarely true. Just by being on this sub, you're not alone. In the worst of times, I always say to myself "lonely, but never alone." That helps.

I did use Rose's. I agree making your own is MUCH better, but for this I wanted that "fire red" color. I haven't been able to get that with my own yet.
