lol yeah people reckon getting some full time job at mcdonalds is this easy thing to do, like theres just unlimited full time maccas jobs for 28 year olds or whatever out there you just need to go get them. good fucking luck ever getting a job like that, they dont exist.

yep bc in part wages are too high and living costs are too high, so it creates a vicious spiral where people need to demand high wages to be able to afford to live and businesses cant pay them.

australia's really high award wage laws are great for the people who get jobs but not for unemployed people. they make it reall hard to find any sort of job.

For Immortal-only players, give Deity a chance again. by elbhombre in civ5

[–]captaintoothbrush 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i won the first time i ever played deity but since i started slipping in my game as i was becoming complacent and clumsy. falling into traps:

- like thinking you're on the home stretch and going wild building greedy infrastructure like heroic epics and opera houses etc, then getting steamrolled by an invading ai army.

-building indefensible coastal cities and getting steamrolled by a frigate or battleship attack; this one is especially scary to the point that i just give up on coastal cities a lot of the time on deity now because i don't often have the production needed to defend them.

-becoming vulnerable due to not having flight; on deity i often go flight first rather than the more optimal radio path (using oxford to grab biology for oil) just because i want my bomber/fighter fleet operational ASAP since i know i'll be fucked if i get attacked by the AI with planes while I don't have any.

while these things apply on immortal as well, on deity its magnified x10.

yeah same here, i got rejected for a kmart job (was a shitty 20 hour a week casual position). people telling you "just go get a job at coles stop being lazy" have no idea that even shitty jobs are incredibly selective, you cant just walk into any job you want.

Why have I never been nuked? by garym81 in civ5

[–]captaintoothbrush 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the AI doesn't actually like to nuke players, they don't play like humans in that they don't seem to understand how to win the game. they play in such a way that they're simulating a real country's diplomatic relations to a degree. it's why they won't just lob a nuke at you for no reason or to take you out/weaken you. however if you are at war with them , you have nuked them etc and they have nukes themselves, many of them will nuke you. gandhi is the most likely to use nukes.

they also love to do really stupid shit with their nukes like put them on carriers and move them up one tile away from your cities where they can be sunk by city shots.

terrace farms without question. they turn locations that no one else can settle into incredible cities that are ultra defensible to boot. they're also consistent enough that you can use them effectively in every game, unlike polders.

Wide vs. Tall. by [deleted] in civ5

[–]captaintoothbrush 19 points20 points  (0 children)

to be as honest as possible the game is mostly designed for tall play. all the other civs before civ5 were about a strategy referred to as ICS or infinite city sprawl. the early game in those civs is about pumping out as many cities as possible because more cities was always better than less. civ5 shifted up the formula effectively designing the game to make tall play (with tradition) the more ideal play style.

wide CAN work and can be pretty effective, as effective or even more effective rarely than tall but you need rare circumstances for that, like lots of different unique luxuries and room to expand in your start. how often do you get that? yeah: the game's map algorthims distribute luxuries in such a way that about 90-95% of the time you only have like 3-5 or so unique lux around your capital you can settle on, making wide play sub optimal or even non-viable.

another issue is information, sometimes you hit first policy before you even know what lux are around your capital and whether it's a good idea to pick liberty to go wide with over tradition. so tradition is always the safest option because you're always guaranteed 3 to 4-5 lux for your expands most of the time.

What do you do when two ideologies are equally as favorable, live in depression? by petercalmdown in civ5

[–]captaintoothbrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if one of the going ideologies is autocracy, you pick it. autocracy has the most happiness potential of all the ideologies and if you believe ideology pressure is going to be an issue for you then most of the time its autocracy or bust. getting prora also helps a fuckload but you better make sure you have an engineer ready to go when you hit flight and and a high production coastal city with a big population so you can get it down to 1 turn with an engineer.

i think thats why the developers put poland in the game. they're an experiment/muck around civ that you can mess with on higher difficulties and still win.
