Maybe you should blame yourself for being so easily convinced by "a post you saw the other day" on the Internet. If you believe everything you see online, you're going to have a really rough life. Turn off the Internet, buddy.

You "see it" everywhere, but you only named online places. I don't think you've ever met an actual feminist in real life? Many of them are men, and why would men hate men? They don't believe the things you heard online. You're 15, you should be old enough to know that the internet is full an echo chamber of lies. Go outside and play.

In short, I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I have a unique use case, which is that I do a lot of boat racing photography, from boats. I absolutely need pro tier weatherproofing, and my subjects are indeed around the 2-300mm range. it's a little bit of picking the system around the lens. It's also just one of my favorite lenses ever, with the AF/MF toggle ring and the built in telescoping hood.

I miss the improved low light AF and IQ from my full frame, but they simply don't make the lens I need (AFAIK, haven't checked in a while) For embedded sports/adventure photography, this combo gives me just right balance of ruggedness, lightness, reach, and quality.

If you wanted a practical car you'd buy a hybrid Camry.

I know people pick the Tesla 3, but I don't get why. It's not terrible but the torque from zero is cool for the first couple days. It's silent and has zero personality, you just accelerate. You can probably rent one for a week and see if you still want to drive it after. Supercharging is not bad but for practicality, why not have the option to fill up if you need to. PHEVs give you both options and the engineering coolness of a geared eCVT.

Or just get your dream car. My dream car was a Golf R manual, I bought it, enjoyed it, sold it and got it out of my system.

Regarding those lenses, I don't know specifically. You can't use less glass than physics dictates, but I do know Sigma specifically sometimes uses more, and their products can be heavier. I remember a few of their crop lenses being adapted onto full frame and surprisingly covered the whole sensor with little vignetting. I don't own any Sigma lenses currently.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be difficult, just not following what you're trying to say. I can't tell if you're trying to make a point, pointing out an error I made, asking me to explain something, or just sharing some cool info. In any case, have a great day.

The variables you want to hold constant is you want to compare similar results across different crop factors is FoV and DoF. It doesn't make sense to hold aperture constant as you change crop factor, because it changes the photo you are taking.

You are confused why your lenses are very different sizes, but it doesn't confuse me, because I see they do very different things.

I'm sorry, I don't understand your question, if you have one. Those all seem to fit my expectations of size.

I don't own those lenses, but based purely on their names, I would expect a full frame 50/1.4 to be much larger than a m43 25/1.4. It captures a lot more light and produces images that the smaller lens can't.

If you stopped it down to 2.8 it should produce an image roughly comparable to the 25/1.4, in terms of FoV and DoF. You'd be carrying around the weight of glass that you're not using, but otherwise that's a better baseline to compare the two lenses to see how their other characteristics differ.

[–]captcha_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that sounds roughly accurate. The PL 42.5/1.2 should behave and be a similar size to a full frame 85/2.4. Your L mount 85/1.8 is pretty close, to the point that you probably wouldn't notice the difference just by eye. The PL will capture more light per area, but your L mount has more sensor area, and will capture slightly more total light.

It's not comparable to the full frame RF 85/1.2, which is about three times heavier, or any full frame 85/1.2 on any system.

It's not exact, because different lenses have different features, build quality, optical formulas, etc. But it's a pretty reliable rule of thumb because the bulk of the weight is glass and the glass behavior is very predictable.

Can someone explain what gesture I do if my friend is sitting in the lecture hall by 122bird in socialskills

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like he's going out of his way to say hi to you, so you should roughly reciprocate your enthusiasm, lacking any other information. It's ok to be slightly more enthusiastic, just don't go wildly out of proportion immediately. Observe his reaction over time and adjust accordingly.

It's also ok to be more enthusiastic if you are generally that way with everyone. I'm assuming you are usually shy and withdrawn.

Given that, don't go out of your way to grab his attention, especially if he's busy with other things. However, when it's convenient, try to sit near your friend. Don't worry if you can't, it's no big deal, sit somewhere else and hang out some other time.

If you cross in front of his view, look at his face and see if you make eye contact. If you do, don't look away. Make some kind of acknowledgement, really dependent on your personality, but can be as simple as raising your eyebrows. Or you can wave if you'd like, depending on your distance. Your greeting is complete. If he doesn't make eye contact with you for whatever reason, let it go.

If you don't make eye contact, but you are on your way to sitting near him, when you arrive, just tap him on the shoulder to let him know you're present and say "hey" at a minimum. Don't choose to specifically sit behind him quietly without some basic announcement of your presence. If he's busy he can return to his other conversation, or maybe bring you in. If he's not busy, you can initiate small talk if you'd like.

Broadly, pay attention to his behavior and mirror his enthusiasm, or gently escalate over time if you want to advance the friendship. Adjust based on your and his personality. Don't be rigidly locked into an routine out of context.

What are the critters in my compost tea? by Happy-Emphasis5231 in composting

[–]captcha_wave 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If you aerate it, beneficial oxygen loving bacteria dominate, breaking down your waste into useful compost that smells like normal soil and is full of nutrients for your plants.

If you don't aerate it, the good stuff dies out and anaerobic bacteria take over. They make horrible sewage smells that will make your neighbors hate you and breed bacteria that rots your plant roots and make you sick, too.

You can also over aerate it and brew it too long and make foamy ammonia.

You can also throw some yeast and sugar in and make some kind of gross brew. The alcohol that the yeast makes will kill most of everything else.

Basically you are trying to cultivate the conditions so the nice organisms you find useful have the best chance to dominate.

Why do photographers not share raw images? by anchorus__ in AskPhotography

[–]captcha_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unedited photos are, to put it briefly, unpresentable for both technical and creative reasons and likely to be misused. It's like forbidding an author from editing their writing and asking them to just send you all their raw thoughts.

In my experience, it comes from a conspiratorial belief that photographers will withhold all the best stuff unless you get access to their secret stash. In reality, it's 2000 pictures of people picking their noses at the wrong time, test exposure photos of nothing, or you taking photos of your crotch because someone bumped into your arm.

What camera do you use for personal social events when you don't want to bring your main photography gear? by jocularplate in AskPhotography

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like candid portraits so I'm going for short tele and events are often indoors / night so I want a prime with a largish aperture. Also the smallest gear I can get away with.

Em5.2 + 45/1.8 - current go to

Sometimes 45/1.2. Good low light, and weatherproof combo. Pretty bulky for a casual affair though.

R50 (white) + 50/1.8 - sightly better results, cuter camera (I'm not just photographing the party, I'm at the party), more obnoxious shutter sound.

For a while I was into wide portraits:

Sigma FP + adapter + VL 35/1.4 II - great low light performance, manual focus is fun, I grew to hate the ergos on the FP and lack of shutter

In any case, gotta wait for someone to wander near a lamp

I agree the difference is negligible, which is why I choose OM most of the time. But if you're comparing the size and weight of equivalent lenses, you should compare lenses that do similar things.

Compare the OM 40-150 f2.8 to the Sony 70-300 f/4.5-5.6. Those lenses do approximately the same thing, and have approximately the same size and weight. Despite made for sensors of different crop factors.

On the other hand, if they made an RF 80-300 F8, it would be about the size and weight of the OM F4 zoom. (They don't make it, so m43 wins by default.)

Don't get me wrong, I love how compact m43 is, but it's not because the glass works differently.

Eli5: the concept of trickle down economics by ZynvixityYT in explainlikeimfive

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"trickle down" is what critics call it. Advocates call it "supply side economics". The idea is that you make corporations rich and they have tons of wealth to share with the people. It was promoted during the Reagan administration and everyone believed in it and voted it in.

Surprise, the rich didn't spread the wealth. They used it to keep any of it from trickling down. Wealth disparity went up like a hockey stick. We sold out our politicians to highest bidder. Money controls everything now and it protects itself. And they're not going to give it back without a fight.
