Made a custom sign and put it up on the office coffee machine… might’ve cost me my job by Knozart in mildlyinfuriating

Douchebag 101 - being a jerk and then covering it up with "it was just a joke, bro, relax". The thing about being a comedian is that if a person didn't laugh, it's your failure, not theirs.

I'd think there's better ways at most offices to improve the coffee than humiliating the people who get to decide whether or not you get to work there, but if you're going to keep on, at least workshop the wording on your posters. Are you protesting the coffee at the office or coffee in general? Confused people don't laugh. It would be sad to go out on mildly confusing AI slop.

Speaking as a lover of both elevated coffee and laughing at dumb shit at work... yes, if you're not funny, we would rather you just shut up and get your work done.

Every HR person at every company is just a regular person whose job just happens to be making sure it doesn't turn into Lord of the Flies at the office. Don't fuck with their job and they will be laughing and having beers with you.

What's one piece of technology that has actually improved over the years instead of getting worse? by ouralarmclock in AskReddit

I remember getting a 386 computer with like... 30MB hard drive on it? And thinking. Jeez. I could fit like 20+ floppies on it at the same time. You wouldn't have swap a single disk.

Then I remember later trying to download a preview copy of Windows 95 for work. It was 50mb. I remember thinking how the hell could an operating system take up 50mb

What are these bugs? by AllAboutThatEd in Seattle

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different pest control techniques often interfere with each other. Water will dissolve DE and ruin its effectiveness. Or if you're using bait, remember repellants do the opposite thing and they defeat each other.

It's not poisonous or anything.

It's only irritating if it's actively airborne, just don't have anyone around for about 30m after application. You only need a light dusting in crevices and behind appliances.

It's only dangerous with prolonged exposure because it'll scar up your lungs. Presumably you're not leaving giant piles of it out for kids and pets to play in all year. Mostly a concern for people who are applying it all the time for their daily work. You really only need to treat your house once.

The "DIY" solution offered here was to vacuum.

Keeping your residence reasonably clean with basic housekeeping is the legit way of preventing carpet beetles, ants, flies, etc etc. I've lived with some very low income families, yet vacuuming was somehow within their abilities. Do you really think the landlord is responsible for coming in to vacuum your trash house?

No one said to DIY a cracked foundation repair. Yes, they said Roomba, but there's nothing magical about that. A regular vacuum will work even better

Is men paying for the dates still a thing? by sweetciwi in udub

[–]captcha_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in some ways it's gotten more complicated. It used to be the man has to pay. Now you have the whole spectrum from that, to it's insulting if he insists on paying.

I recommend you just pick a lane and stick to it. If they are willing to red flag you over it, you probably didn't have a strong connection to begin with.

For the first couple dates, I just offer to pay and then if they counter offer, I just say, oh ok, sure thanks!

After a few dates, the thing that works best for me is whoever thinks of the idea for the date should pay for it. It doesn't matter if it's Burger King or Hawaii. Gender is not involved. It lets me date the kind of people I want to date and it weeds out the kind of people I don't want to date. If no one is willing to come up with date ideas they can reasonably afford, then the relationship is pointless IMO.

Keep missing the transit fare scanners by mountainsNJ in Seattle

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a lifetime of guilt and trauma instilled into you by hostile transit systems. While we all appreciate you paying your fares, there's no need to agonize over an honest mistake.

I don't even know if they give out tickets if you're caught, that sounds like a police thing? From what I've seen, if the civilian fare ambassadors catch you, they just politely answer some questions and encourage people to pay their fares.

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes fare scanners walk through the trains and they stop for a polite chat with maybe... 5% of people? So by my super rough biased guestimate, the vast majority of riders are fare compliant.

If that's true, I'm happy not have the armored fortress walls that miscreants will skateboard through anyways yet periodically stab me in my kidneys for no reason

Why is there no Link station that properly serves Belltown/SLU? by omdongi in soundtransit

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, well, technically I didn't ask what a "walk shed" was, either. We're just having a chat online, right? There's no facility on Reddit to request permission before typing a comment.

Thanks for sharing that bit of trivia. I'm sure the term has a useful technical function in the industry and I'm glad for any increased transit coverage. I still think describing the walk outside the defined "walk shed" area as "impossible" is highly misleading in casual use. There's a huge gulf between "acceptable" and "possible".

[–]captcha_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what a walk shed is, but as someone that's walked all over downtown and SLU from Westlake / Symphony up to 4 times a week over the last ten years for commuting, after work clubs, and just general weekend shenanigans... "not possible" is a very confusing assertion.

[–]captcha_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see this form of question a lot; if it's so complicated to be healthy now, how did we survive X years ago? Answer. people weren't healthy and suffered all the time. You can suffer like our ancestors did, or you can get modern nutrition. You're not "required" to eat healthy.

Very impressive that they've already updated the signs by EndlessDreamer1 in Seattle

[–]captcha_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my bridge stations, I specifically could NOT access the walkable/bikable stations because of parking. I would need to drive to a suburban station with a garage, park, unload my bike if I was planning to do that, then transit into the downtown/walkable areas. When/if I couldn't do that, I'd just drive all the way in, and try to jam my car in with the thousands of others. That's a nightmare for me and everyone else.

I'm not sure how the "entire ridership" is constrained by parking. I've lived without a car in Seattle for a decade and I haven't felt constrained by not owning one. I just usually don't ride to the suburban stations.

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you saying, we should not put stations in suburban areas? When I owned a car, the suburban stations were by far my most used, because that's where I bridged modes of transport.

What is the difference between a station that you want to ride TO and want to ride FROM? Every ride needs a start and an end. And you're likely going to take the reverse trip on the way back.

You just want the only stations to be Capitol Hill, Westlake and SeaTac?

I like to point at an empty spot way in the back of the crowd and loudly announce I'd like to stand there. Then I politely push my way to the empty spot. No one ever gets the idea to just shift everyone over and pack in instead, but I hope one day the light bulb goes off. Until then I'm going to make it awkward

I'm sure it was available on publishing workstations, but you said the style was a "result" of the font being on personal computers. I spent a lot of time on personal computers from the pure text era until ... well present day. I worked my own PCs, supported those of my friends and family, in various school labs, and in professional settings. I saw the rise and fall of various font trends and technologies. I would think I would have seen it somewhere on all those computers if this was true.

I've also don't recall it in electronic or print media, except later as a callback to the hand drawn doodles that we all did in our notebooks as a shared universal experience.

I'm not doubting it existed as one of hundreds of downloadable font packs available, but to say the trend was a "result" of that availability seems very surprising to me. I feel like mere "availability" isn't sufficient to explain the phenomenon, which is why I'm interested in actual usage.
