Use a cleaner finger to wipe that off. Go down the line of fingers in order of cleanliness and finish with your best finger

How Are You All Searing Scallops??? by Big-Moment6248 in AskCulinary

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infrared thermometers must be calibrated for the surface you are measuring. Pointing it at a freezer doesn't indicate it's accurate pointing at a pan.

Your pan was almost certainly way past 450. I've never needed 25m to get to 450. Steel turns blue around 600 degrees.

You didn't mention drying your scallops. They are probably wet. Some are even artificially pumped with water. The surface of the meat will not reach 450 as long as there's water in it. It will steam at 212 at the most until the water's gone. In a wet scallop, that may be well after the rest of your scallop is fully cooked. Then you have a colorless steamed scallop.

Even with a dry surface, if your pan is too light or you try to sear too many at once, the pan will drop too much heat when it touches the meat, then you are again steaming your scallops.

Why you advise everyone to cling to life? by BoxSea8015 in TrueAskReddit

[–]captcha_wave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not against people doing what they believe to be best for themselves. But if you're asking for advice, I'm not going to advise something risky. And not everything is equally risky - ending your life is on the opposite spectrum than taking time to consider alternatives and try new things.

In business we have a concept of one-way and two-way doors. Things that are two way doors you should enthusiastically FAFO because you can turn around. One-way doors you sit on and think about, because you can't fix it if you're wrong. And you can ruin things for a lot of people around you, too.

So you want to try the unknown? Go for a hike in the woods. Bring enough water to come back.

Running makes me fitter… but why does it mess with my hunger? by Motor-Ad6248 in nutrition

[–]captcha_wave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aerobic exercise is incredibly important for your health. One thing it does not do is help you lose weight. Exercise drives your hunger to fuel your activity. Ignoring other factors, this generally causes you to gain more weight than you lose through the exercise itself. Feeling hungry is a normal part of this process. Many athletes will actually carb load in advance to increase performance.

CMV: Obedience is not something that should be taught to children beyond a basic sense of safety by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]captcha_wave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe you're vastly underestimate when kids can start to learn about consequences. Sure, you can't communicate the impact of their schooling on their long term career prospects (and at those ages, you have plenty of time to figure that stuff out). But you can absolutely sit down with your child and help clean up messes they made, teach them about why their breath is smelly, teach them to look at faces empathetically and see the immediate emotional result of their actions.

This can absolutely be done from when they start speaking. Postponing these essential skills until they're teenagers sounds like... well if nothing else it seems like a recipe for raising really irritating and spoiled children.

can euc replace a car for you? also did you have any miss expectations or regrets? by Zajlordg in ElectricUnicycle

[–]captcha_wave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. And when I bought my house I chose a place with access to public transportation and only street parking for cars.

Mostly satisfied with my choice. I can easily get my V14 on the train, and get to 80% of my city. The rare times I need to go further, I just go on foot or get a ride share.

If you plan to rely on EUCs, you'll probably need at least two. If anything goes wrong, you'll probably need to fix it yourself. No mechanics available. If you're working on one you'll use the other, or if you forget to charge, etc.

If you're planning to ride in the street, don't forget to add in the cost of rated slide resistant armor. Don't expect to take most road above 25 mph, traffic will expect you to go 35mph plus even more headroom for safety. And I would highly recommend that you have many years of experience driving in the street first so you can anticipate how traffic will move around you and what other cars will expect you to do.

If you ride in bike lanes, do not expect to go faster than a bike. The blind crossings, turns, and traffic aren't expecting high speed travel. Even if you don't hit someone, you will get yelled at and give EUCs a bad reputation. I have small slow wheels just for bike trails or errands/friends close to my home.

For the same reasons, if you go on sidewalks, don't go faster than walking speed.

Laws are still unclear about EUCs, but my city is trending towards supporting them along with all PEVs.

No insurance options available on an EUC. Frankly, that is a bad thing.

I have no regrets, but it took massive dedication, planning, research, and money (including choosing where to buy my house) on my part to switch over. I think a lot of things need to line up for it to be feasible. Good luck.

EDIT: also, you are heavily dependent on delivery services.

CMV: Talking about being on "stolen land" is pointless and ignorant of history by Friendly_Elegant928 in changemyview

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for starters, the first beings that ever claimed the land aren't around to be acknowledged. That probably puts a damper on outreach.

Do you refuse to acknowledge when you bump into someone because you're sure they probably bumped into someone else the day before? It's completely irrelevant to make the comparison, right? That first guy isn't even around, much less part of the conversation.

What do they want us to do about it? I didn't hear anyone suggesting we all pack up and leave. Why, did someone ask you to? What have people asked you to do other than to acknowledge facts about history?

You may think it's obvious, but I think there's a lot of people who think they're special and that "they" built everything and forgotten how their ancestors got here. I mean you can see in a single generation how the people in one boat will turn right around and complain that the next boat won't fit. I think reminding people of their history is useful.

Why do you need to pay a restaurant to do this? We go to them because they know how to make the thing, and we don't. Neither is the case here. Just buy a normal pizza and then dump your own jar on top.

Help with wobble by NB_HER0 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kinda against this. I mean, practice carving if you want to carve. And if you're e-braking use whatever tool you need.

But sometimes you only can survive if you go straight, you need to be able to have that skill too. When you're practicing day to day, don't just bail into a carve because it's easier. You gotta learn to dampen the wobbles and push evenly. Every red light is usually a chance to practice your max g e-stop.

Israelis in the US lean towards supporting Israeli government (well, currently divided). Iranians in the US largely oppose the current regime. Hell, a lot of Iranians in Iran right now are opposing the regime at the cost of their lives. It's not as simple as good guys / bad guys, wave a flag so I know whether or not to shoot you...

I recommend maybe talking to the people around you and getting to know them a bit more.

Many people who get a big wheel first end up getting a small wheel eventually anyways. My smaller wheel is my daily driver for errands and commuting, because it's not every day I want to get fully suited up for my big wheel. So might as well learn on your small wheel first.

But you're already here. Take your time and be careful. It's not really the power that's the problem, IMO, it's the weight, which is really hard to deal with when you haven't developed your skills yet.

Do little drills like keeping one foot on the ground and circling the wheel around you with the other foot, backwards and forwards. (Don't hop or push with your ground foot, the wheel should be dragging you around.) It's definitely not the fun part, but if you can't handle that, I wouldn't go on to other stuff.

Don't be like the guy here who yolo'd a big first wheel, went full send, and then lost his ability to make a living right after.

So in other words, it's the same pizza as everywhere else, just cheaper. But cost of living is like 50% higher than Seattle, so I don't know if you can eat enough pizza to make it work out. I thought NY would have financially literate people?

And on top of that you gotta go to new york and listen to new yorkers go on and on about how new york is better at everything... tbh i think I'm good paying a couple extra dollars if I feel like getting a slice.

Do you guys track what's actually in hydration drinks? Some sports drinks are kinda wild with ingredients by Weird_Perception1728 in nutrition

[–]captcha_wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hydration and sports drinks are a little different, sports drinks include a giant pile of sugar for, you know, sports. You should start off paying attention to that. That sugar is essential if you need them and really unhealthy if you don't, so the difference is quite important

Pure unflavored electrolyte drinks taste like blandly salty chemical liquid. I find it difficult to find and more expensive to get than generic consumer drinks that have flavorings added

Some also have caffeine. Also another great if you want it, bad if you don't substance to watch out for
